Article: Retro fashion transcends at a Hanson music video shoot

By | March 8, 2010

Examiner.com

When the band, Hanson (yes, of “MMMBop” fame), announced that they would film a 70’s style music video for their new single, “Thinking Bout Somethin,” fans from around the nation and Canada raided their closets and then promptly flocked to Tulsa, OK. The video was to be reminiscent upon a scene from The Blues Brothers, where Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi break into dance alongside Ray Charles on piano as a crowd forms outside.

The Brothers Hanson were bedecked appropriately – Isaac in a black suit and Ray Bans, directly inspired by the film; Taylor wore a groovy floral patterned shirt tucked into pale pants; and Zac was Fonzie-esque in jeans and a cool black motorcycle jacket.

The crowd, comprised of about 20 professional dancers and 300 fans, followed suit in varying degrees of retro styles. Despite the fact that Hanson posted a dress code for the video, the outfits of the attendants varied greatly. “Everyone had their own style,” said Waukesha resident, Erin Tibbitts, who had flown into town for the shoot. “Some people dressed up. Some people dressed down. Some followed the 70’s vibe.”

The colorful and random look of the gathered crowd somehow added to the authenticity and even reinforced the idea that certain 40-year-old styles have transcended time and come back around again. The great and interesting thing about vintage fashion is that the good styles always come back. Fans need not reach any further than their own closets or the nearest mall for a classic pair of straight or boot cut jeans, crisp button down shirts, earthy tones, fringe details, cute boots, or hippy headbands. Flower power lives today as witnessed by these retro yet also currently-dressed fans and dancers.

The stylish Blues Brothers knew the value of a great suit and slick shades, and Hanson looks forward to supporting this sentiment when they release their fun throw back music video late this spring.

7 of the most surprising “Where Are They Nows”

Hanson

Hanson burst onto the pop music scene in 1997 with their hit song MMMBop before immediately backsliding back into obscurity. Given that practically no one has heard from the three Hanson brothers (Isaac, Taylor and Zac) in over a decade, you’ll likely be very surprised to learn that these three plucky lads are still making music together. That’s right my friends, Hanson is still making records and touring the world over. Perhaps even more surprising: they actually have a fairly rabid fan base. Though no where near as large as it was in the late 90s, swooning girls continue to pack clubs and concert halls for their chance to see their favorite bros in all they’re sugary-sweet glory.

The new album title “Shout It Out”, along with the release date in June, The Bamboozle Road Show in May, and the making of our new music video this weekend. There is a lot to look forward to, and a lot that we are still working on. The 2010 H.net members kit is almost finished and I think your gonna like it (who doesn’t like new music?!?!), as well as the awesome Deluxe Version of Shout It Out (Trust me this is like nothing else we have ever done), rehearsal for the 5 of 5 shows will start at the end of this month, and then there will be an announcement of a summer tour very soon (we are hoping for shows late July). Looking forward to seeing all of you this weekend. SHOUT IT OUT!

Tulsa World Scene

On Saturday, Tulsa pop, rock and soul act Hanson will shoot dance and other sequences for an upcoming video release of its new single, “Thinking About Something” from their upcoming album “Shout it Out,” sources confirm.

Greenwood Avenue (100 N. Greenwood Ave.), between Cameron Street and Archer Street, will be closed 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturday, confirmed Sgt. Skipper Bain of the Tulsa Police Police Department.

The video shoot is scheduled from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Bain confirmed in an email to the Tulsa World.

Families are welcome to attend, enjoy and be a part of this music video shoot, the email said. Learn more about the video shoot at Hanson.net, here.

Drivers and pedestrians who are not coming to watch or participate in this event should avoid this area.

The album is set for release June 1.

The band has been recruiting dancers and video participants from its exclusive fan club community.

For the new album, Hanson brothers Zac, Taylor and Isaac have recruited Motown, R&B and pop heavies to help.

Said Taylor Hanson recently to Rolling Stone: “The album title stood
out early on in the record process as a phrase that helped put all those elements into one simple statement.”

It was recorded in El Paso, Tulsa and Hollywood.

To imbue the influences of their youth — Billy Joel, Steve Winwood, Motown and others — they’ve recruited influential Michael Jackson horn and pop music arranger Jerry Hey and Motown funk bassist Bob Babbitt as guests.

“The record is built like a lot of records from ’60s and ’70s,” Taylor Hanson told Rolling Stone. “From the beginning of the writing process, it felt like the kind of record we could have old school horn parts on.”

The three-time Grammy-nominated trio of brothers brothers formed Hanson, a garage band, as pre-teens in Tulsa in the mid-1990s. All three play piano. Today, Zac predominantly plays drums and Isaac plays lead guitar. The act has sold millions of albums since its youthful debut at the downtown Mayfest arts and music festival in 1992.

Watch a blog video from Hanson.net showing dancer auditions, here.

Fans who can’t be there have also set up their own Twitter search keyword to help chronicle the event: #shoutitout.

SIOBHAN MAGNUS – AMERICAN IDOL WORSHIP REIGNS FOR THE CAPE COD NATIVE — THIS KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE

By | February 26, 2010

Gather.com

In a recent interview, Siobhan Magnus, the 19-year-old Cape Cod native who is making waves on American Idol this season, has announced that her influences are varied and pretty intense and include the venerable train wreck Courtney Love, ex-HOLE frontwoman and Mrs. Kurt Cobain, RIP.

Her musical influenecs include “Janis Joplin and Billie Holiday. A lot of older, standout singers have been the biggest influence on my voice and the way I approach singing. … I adore Courtney Love. And not even just her voice but her in-your-face, ‘I don’t care what you think about me because I’m me’ presence.”

Her first musical interest was sparked by a rather pop-ular group–“I was in the first grade, the first tape that was mine was the MMMBop single by Hanson. I still adore them wholeheartedly. I am the biggest Hanson fan. I’ve seen them four times. I cried every time.”

She said she is willing to give country a shot and would really enjoy a jazz theme or big band night. “I thought about doing My Way by Frank Sinatra because it’s my grandfather’s favorite song. I just feel it’s a song Simon would say, ‘That was indulgent,’ because it’s a song you’re supposed to sing when you’re an accomplished performer.”

She isn’t scared of the judges and seems to be very mature and in control, even during Hollywood week to the chargrin of the judges. “In the first round of Hollywood Week, they said I’m too serious and act too old for my age. As much as it is important for me to remain composed and be mature, I can’t forget I should be having fun.”

How good are her chances? Who’s her stiffest competition? What do you think Courtney Love would think about Siobhan’s American Idol run? Do you think Courtney would make a great guest judge??

While you’re thinking about that, enjoy this clip of her singing in a local theater production of BARNUM on the Cape.
