HANSON: Announcement Coming Any Day Now

By | September 12, 2019

WEEKLY PIC

We’re excited that we’re about to announce a special run of concerts.  Getting excited for bringing Christmas classics and new music to the stage.

MESSAGE FROM THE BAND

We are hard at work in the studio this week recording a host of new music and making plans to get back to many of our favorite places around the world in 2020.  The music, just like our plans, goes all over the place, but it makes no apologies for being a complete smorgasbord of sound and  style. With titles like Fearless and Don’t Ever Change, you can see a little bit of what we’re hearing. The new album is coming together as  good as we could have hoped but it’s still months away from being released. If waiting sounds depressing, you won’t need to wait that long. Starting this fall, we will begin sharing some of the new songs live and a big info drop for the fall tour is coming any day now! Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Isaac, Taylor And Zac

Song Facts: Songwriter Interview: Ellen Shipley

By | September 11, 2019

Song Facts

Songfacts: You also wrote a song with Hanson [“Yearbook”], who typically wrote their own stuff. What happened there?

Shipley: I was called in to work with them. The record company called and they played me “MmmBop” and I said, “You want me to write with them? I don’t relate to this.” And they said, “Just meet with them. They really want to work with you.”

They came to my studio in Studio City. They were really cute, except for Zac who kept making paper airplanes and throwing them all over the place. And they brought their parents, who were interfering with the writing.

But I wanted it to come from them so I asked Taylor, since he seemed the one with the talent and the ideas, “What story in your life bothers you?” And he told me this story of this kid that disappeared, and the whole thing is real. They don’t know whether he committed suicide, they don’t know what happened, but he disappeared. And so it was a dark song, but I love it.

Songfacts: It’s certainly not what you’d expect from Hanson.

Shipley: No.

Songfacts: And it sounds like they needed you there because without you drawing it out of them it’s unlikely they would have had the confidence to write a song like that.

Shipley: Oh, they never would have written that song, no. But it was inside him and sometimes that happens if people put me with an artist to write. I believe a songwriter’s job, if you’re working with another artist, is to be a speaker for their thoughts, for their ideas. It’s about them. When I was a songwriter writing with other people, like the artist, I always felt it had to come from them because it’s not about me giving them great titles and stuff, it’s about their life.

So, the Hansons were a big surprise. It was a difficult thing to do between Zac and their parents. Oh, my god! I finally threw them all out. I told them to go to a restaurant so I could work with Taylor.

Songfacts: You got rid of Zac and Isaac and just left the middle one.

Shipley: Yeah. I said, “Take your kids out to eat or something, I can’t do this.”

The Strange Origins of 17 Popular Songs

By | September 5, 2019

Mental Floss

You’ve hummed along to them in the car, belted them out in the shower, performed them on karaoke night, and possibly even danced with your grandparents to one of them at your second cousin’s wedding. But do you really know the dark origins behind Van Halen’s “Jump” or the existential conversation that is Hanson’s “MMMbop”? The answers may not be as obvious—or innocent—as you might have thought. Here are the surprising origin stories behind 17 popular tunes.

1. “MMMBop” // Hanson

Yes, Hanson’s 1997 hit “MMMBop” contains such lyrics as “Mmm bop, ba duba dop ba du bop, ba duba dop ba du bop, ba duba dop ba du.” And it was written and performed by a trio of young brothers ranging from 11 to 16 years old at the time. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t deep. “It’s the most misunderstood successful song of all time,” Zac Hanson told Entertainment Weekly in 2017. “Even at the height of 1997, it’s a song nobody understood. [Ninety-nine] percent of the people who have any reference from it don’t understand it.” One month later, Zac gave an even more explicit answer about the meaning behind the song while appearing on the Kyle and Jackie O. Show, stating:

“‘MMMbop’ represents a frame of time: ‘In an MMMbop they’re gone’ it says in the lyrics of the song. The whole song’s about the fact that almost everything in your life will come and go very quickly. You’ve got to figure out what matters and you’ve got to grab onto those things.”

So that’s what “ba duba dop ba du” means.

HANSON: Our Favorite People

By | September 5, 2019

WEEKLY PIC

Creation was in high gear as we recorded new music for our upcoming Against the World album in one of the most legendary studios in the world, Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama. Tapping into the deep soul of the shoals, no turning back.

MESSAGE FROM THE BAND

The past few weeks have been a blur – road trips, southern food and lots of music, all things we love. We are well on our way to finishing a new album even though there is an encyclopedia length list of overdubs to do before music can be called complete.  At the moment we are taking a few days to recharge and then it will be back into the studio to get as much done as possible before we head to Honolulu for our first ever show in Hawaii.  With any luck it will be the perfect thing to do to celebrate completing a new album.

Speaking of shows, we are very nearly ready to announce a US run of shows in the late fall and we’re bringing several of our favorite people on the road with us.  We love playing live, but we’re especially looking forward to fall concerts because it will be our first chance to share some of this new music live.

If you are a Hanson.net member, we have two new videos from the making of In Real Life this week. You may never be able to listen to Better Days again without laughing.

Album 7 – Possible Spoilers

By | September 2, 2019

Just a heads up – as song clips are released, we will be updating hansonstage with them.  Details will be posted to the stickied blog post (but you will need to click the “read more” in order to see the full post content)

Titles and/or place holders will also be posted in the database which will show up on the “Against the World” album listing page.  (Any songs that don’t end up actually making the album will get switched to “Unreleased” once we get an official track listing)

With these songs being included in the database – they WILL show up under the album on the songs heard live page!  If you don’t want to know any titles (or made up placeholder titles as it may be) scroll past this area on the songs heard live page or do not visit it until the album is released.   These songs will also turn up on the “Never Live” page as well as the “How many times have songs heard live” stats pages – as well as any other page that lists out all the track listings of albums and how many times they have been performed live.
