The return of my pre-teen obsession

By | May 13, 2010

Arenac County Independent

The scene: screaming teenage girls pummeling each other to get to the front of the stage, crying when their favorite musician appears. News stations immediately begin to compare the reaction to the way girls screamed and cried for The Beatles.

It’s a reaction that new teen pop sensation, Justin Bieber, is experiencing at the moment. And if you don’t recognize the name, you probably don’t have a teenage or pre-teen daughter. (Well, I guess I don’t either, but that’s beside the point.)

Underneath the catchy beats and smooth voice, all I can think is, “When did I start getting old?”

Flash back 13 years: It’s 1997, and you can’t even catch a glimpse of my bedroom wall underneath all my Hanson posters. I’m resenting my parents for not taking me to a concert in Columbus, since Hanson never made a stop in my home state of West Virginia.

I’m determined to record every TV show appearance, which I do on VHS because DVDs were nonexistent. I even have some of their music on cassette, since the ratio of CDs to cassettes was fairly even at that time.

I spend many of my summer days flipping between VH1 and MTV, hoping to catch one of Hanson’s music videos. My day is made when “MMMBop” plays on VH1’s Pop Up Video. Remember, there’s no YouTube, and both music channels actually played music videos for hours on end, so it was all about patience and perseverance.

Even though I know it’s a very slim possibility, I still dream of marrying the youngest brother, Zac.

Now back to the present: I’ve managed to go to one Hanson concert in 2000 in Houston, but I’ve missed every appearance in Michigan because I never felt like driving two hours to see them.

I don’t have any TV appearances recorded on the DVR because I can just go to YouTube if I want to see anything. (And yes, they’ve actually had recent appearances.)

I no longer have pre-teen girl dreams of marrying Zac, and I even have a daughter who is a couple months older than his son. (All of the brothers are married with children these days.)

So when people like the Jonas Brothers or Justin Bieber elicit fanatical screaming from pre-teen girls — including some who weren’t even born when I was jamming to “MMMBop” — I feel ancient … until one of my coworkers tells me about how big New Kids on the Block were when she was in seventh grade. I was born around the height of NKOTB’s fame, just like all the girls going crazy for Bieber were born at the height of Hanson’s fame.

I only have 10 years to prepare myself for the next big musical heartthrob(s) who will inevitably capture the attention of my daughter. Right now it’s all about “Dora the Explorer” and “Yo Gabba Gabba,” but before I know it, I’ll have to prepare my wallet and my daughter’s bedroom walls for the pre-teen years.

On August 16 and 17, Hanson will be back in Michigan — one concert in Grand Rapids, one in Royal Oak.

I’m seriously debating making the drive to one of the shows. I figure I might as well get concert-going out of my system before I have to chauffeur my daughter and her squealing group of friends to see whomever they’re dreaming of marrying.

The one fun thing about pre-teen obsessions, though, is that there’s always a little part of it that stays with you throughout your life. I still keep track of when Hanson releases new music — the new album is out June 8 — and I’m sure there will be countless people still following up with Justin Bieber’s music 10 years from now.

“Thinking ’bout Somethin’ ’’

On which the brother act finally strikes the perfect balance between the sublime bubble gum of “MMMBop” and the harder-edged classic rock of the three albums that followed it. Combine cowbell, R&B horns and a sunny, singalong chorus, and you’ve got a throwback single that deserves to be played to death on merit alone. (From Shout It Out, out June 8)

Hanson's "Thinking 'Bout Somethin'" Music Video

By | May 11, 2010

PasteMagazine

Though I spent much of my adolescence swooning over these three blond brothers, and though last year I unabashedly declared their Snowed In to be The Best Christmas Album Ever, I’ve felt aggressively “meh” about Hanson in recent years. When an advance copy of their new album, Shout It Out, arrived at the Paste offices a few weeks ago and emails from their publicist about the new release started popping into my inbox, I could have hardly cared less. And considering that my 14-year-old self could hardly ever decide whether she wanted to marry Taylor Hanson or just write about his band for a magazine, that’s some mighty powerful “meh.”

But then I finally caved and watched the video for “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’,” the lead single from the new record (which comes out June 8). And. Uh. So. I like it. I really really like it. The song itself combines everything the band’s really good at, fusing their early penchant for old radio-friendly rock ‘n’ roll and soul with their spot-on brother-harmonies and ear for hooks. And the video is everything they haven’t exactly been over the last few years—light-hearted, self-skewering, unabashedly goofy. There is a lot of ass-shaking and smarmy record-store clerk doppelgangers and a dancing flashmob. And also, Weird Al Yankovic? Really, the only thing more remarkable than how much I like this video and the song is how the guys managed to dance in those tight, tight pants.

Member of the Month!

Our Hanson.net Member of the Month for May is TjTom15 (Tom Dryburgh).
Tom is a 15 yr old fan from a small town in Victoria, Australia. In his own words, “I’m 15; almost 16, and currently doing year 10. I suck at pretty much every sport invented! I am attemping to learn piano (not very good at it though!!) I am thinking about getting into arts and events management, once I have completed school, so I could someday manage a band! So Hanson, if you wanna take on a work experience student; I’m free!” Tom’s interests include: listening to music and photography. Congratulations Tom!

Street Teamer of the Month!

Our Street Teamer of the Month is lyndzbug (Lindsey Bombard).
Lindsey’s Street Team leaders say, “she is very positive and upbeat and is a joy to have on the team!” Lindsey lives in upstate NY where she is a teacher. Her interests include reading, teaching, traveling, music, snowboarding, her dogs and friends. From The Band!

We want to thank everyone who joined us for the 5 of 5 concert series. We had an amazing time playing all five albums and especially premiering Shout it Out on night five. We are lucky to have so much music to remember and so many great moments to think back on. We would be nowhere without our incredible fans. Thank you!
Something else awesome happened last week – the “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin'” video passed 1.25 million views on myspace, and that is huge! Thank you for spreading the video and the music. Every little bit helps. We have said it countless times in interviews, but not directly to our fans. Being a band today, there is no better way to spread your music than through your fans. The power of the individual voice has grown so much with the creation of things like Twitter and Facebook, and it affects the way we get our information and the things we trust. Thank you for using your voice to spread our music, and to encourage the people around you to do good through simple actions like taking the walk. You continue to inspire more than just us. We are taking it easy for the next few days, but there is still a lot coming up. The Bamboozle Roadshow is a few weeks away and The Shout it Out Summer Tour is just shortly after that. It will be great to be on the road in the summer after only touring in the fall for the last few years. See you on the road soon and Happy Hanson Day!

Hanson Debuts New Album

By | May 5, 2010

CDInsight.com

If you wait long enough anything becomes nostalgic. The three hardly pubescent long haired brothers who won our hearts in 1997 with “MMBop” are still going strong. In fact Hanson just this Monday finished a run of five sold out gigs, during which during they debuted their new album
entitled Shout it Out.

The prodigal brother boy band played a whopping 130 minute set, performing their entire discography in its entirety. Amazing considering the bulk of the population (including myself) would be hard pressed to name a single song of Hansons, void of “MMMBop.”

None the less, girls have shown that they still have a grasp on the pop-music scene. The stadiums were packed with all the girls who I remember humming their songs down the hallways of my elementary school.

Now near thirty year old men and years later, the pop brothers took the stage and proved that they’re still America’s sweethearts and still fawned over by tidal waves of hysterical chicks.

According to Spin magazine the new album Shout it Out will be up on shelves and ready to purchase this June 8.

Love it or hate it, “MMMBop” became a pop classic that offered one last breath of innocence before radio turned ugly and/or utterly vapid. With the rise of boy bands, mini Mariah Careys, and rap-rock nasties, Hanson’s days were numbered, and when the young trio began making more mature alternative pop, it was shunned by radio and MTV alike. Too bad: 2007’s The Walk was a strong effort from a bunch of post-adolescents who overcame what must have been a boatload of pressure, proving that the brothers hadn’t been suffocated by their past. Taylor (the middle one) most recently teamed up with The Smashing Pumpkin’s James Iha and Cheap Trick’s Bun E. Carlos for super-group Tinted Windows, while keeping busy on an as-yet unnamed 2010 release with his siblings.
