Touring announcements from nineties acts that make you go hmmm….

By | June 7, 2012

Perth Now

EVERYTHING nineties is new again, musically speaking, because there’s a whole swag of acts from that decade touring Perth.

It’s not just Backstreet that’s back, although last week’s New Kids on the Block / Backstreet Boys double billing at Burswood Dome was the biggest retro concert we’ve seen so far.

The 90s invasion continues tonight when East 17 turn Metropolis Fremantle into their ‘house of love’. And in September at the same venue, N-Trance will set you free and Hanson will mmmbop their way in.

Add to that the latest acts to announce they’ve run out of money (that’s the cynical way to look at it). C & C Music Factory will make everybody dance on July 13 at Metro City and Everclear will perform at Amplifier Capitol on October 14

This year we’ve also been treated to The Vengaboys in January, Aqua who toured in March, and S Club, who were here two weeks ago.

The 90s are back – embrace it! (At least ticket prices to these gigs are about the same as what you could afford from working Thursday nights at Pizza Hut!)

Hanson’s honeymoon video offer to Oxfordshire man

By | June 6, 2012

BBC News

An Oxfordshire man who bombarded US pop group Hanson with 461 daily video messages requesting they play at his wedding has been made a “dream” offer.

James Bishop, 26, from Abingdon, and his friend Chris Douch, started sending messages to the band in February 2011.

They replied using YouTube, offering to fly Mr Bishop and his fiancee Jennie Tripp to Jamaica for their honeymoon.

Miss Tripp, who is due to marry Mr Bishop on 28 July, is currently unaware of the scheme.

Mr Bishop said: “It was a strange feeling because my fiancee doesn’t know anything about this.”

He plans to reveal the marathon effort in his wedding speech, but he admitted he was “playing with fire” by speaking to the media.

He has also been running a video blog of his multiple requests for more than a year.

The two men thought the game was up when Hanson announced a gig in Illinois on the planned day of the wedding but then the video message arrived.

In it Zac Hanson, 26, said: “We can’t play the wedding and we don’t play weddings, but what if we gave them a really nice gift?”

Hanson then offered to fly the couple to Jamaica in January and give them tickets to their gig there and pay for their hotel.

During their persistent campaign the pair received encouragement from the band on several occasions. After one concert Taylor Hanson had said their dedication was “impressive”.

But Mr Douch, who helped make the 461 videos, has not been offered a ticket.

He said: “At the moment, no prize. I’m still waiting for my video from Hanson.”

Hanson had a UK number one hit with MMMBop in 1996 while they were all still teenagers.

Their most recent album Shout It Out was released in 2010.

Spurs Nation

The Hanson brothers perform the national anthem before Game 3. Edward A. Ornelas / Express-News

ONE
O, say can you MMMBop? Oklahoma faves Hanson do a stirring national anthem. No, really, it was stirring.

TWO
Another opening tip, another Spurs possession. Could this be the highlight of Game 3 for Tim Duncan?

THREE
10:56, 1st quarter, Thabo Sefolosha steals errant pass by Duncan. Could this be significant?

FOUR
10:05, 1st quarter, Sefolosha steals Boris Diaw pass. Spurs’ brows begin to furrow.

FIVE
9:43, 1st quarter, Sefolosha steals another Duncan pass. What’s going on here?

SIX
9:20, 1st quarter, Sefolosha steals ball from Tony Parker. Hey, aren’t the Swiss supposed to be neutral?

SEVEN
9:47, 4th quarter, DeJuan Blair sees first action of series. Even Switzer-?land’s Sefolosha recognizes this as Pop’s white flag of surrender.

Fan of the Month June – Maribeth

By | June 1, 2012

Name: Maribeth

Age: 27

Location: Mandaluyong, Philippines

What is the very first memory of Hanson that you have?:

When I saw MMMBop on TV in the Summer of 1997 when we were cleaning the house on a Saturday morning.  I saw three girls playing instruments and singing “MMMBop” What? Since then I followed them and found out they are not girls.

How many times have you seen Hanson in concert? Favorite concert
memory?:
Only one and that was the “Shout It Out Tour Live in Manila last March
30, 2012. It was a Roller Coaster ride, really.

What is your favorite Hanson song, and why?:
A lot… all of them actually! Like Zac Hanson said before, “you can
never betray a song!” But currently, I enjoy listening to Rock N Roll
Razorblade. Simply because it symbolizes the ups and downs of a music
artist’s life.

Why do you like/love Hanson?:
Because they are passionate about music and their followers.

How long have you been a Hanson fan?:
Unlike before, I’m not a fan now, really. I just enjoy their music to
its purest unadulterated form.

Why should you be FAN OF THE MONTH?:
Forget it. It doesn’t matter. Just love their music.

State a piece of trivia in regards to you & Hanson (optional):
The morning of April 2, 2012, Ike replied to my tweet.

The best No 1 records: Hanson – MMMBop

By | May 31, 2012

The Guardian

1997: Hanson will probably spend the rest of their lives trying and failing to come up with a song that emulates the genius of MMMBop, and there’s no shame in that

Rolling Stone readers voted MMMBop the sixth worst song of the 90s, but such arrant rockist snobbery need detain us no further. MMMBopwould have been a brilliant song, even before producers The Dust Brothers set about sprinkling magic wikki-wikki pop dust all over it. It’s also a song whose wisdom is inversely proportionate to the age (16, 13, 11) of the three brothers that wrote it. As young Zac Hanson later explained, the lyric was about eschewing the paraphernalia of fame and fortune in favour of “the things that really matter [in life]”. Once the single shot to No 1, Hanson did well to heed its advice. Still very much together, the brothers will probably spend the rest of their lives trying and failing to come up with a song that emulates the genius of MMMBop, and there’s no shame in that. Happily, Hanson wear their albatross lightly. In 2011, they announced they would be launching an India Pale Ale beer called MMMHop.
