Celebrating Two Decades of Hanson, the Boy Band I Grew Up With

WOMAN AT CONCERT

As a child growing up in the 90s, I recall heated debates with my friends in the playground over which boy band was our favourite. While the conclusion almost always ended up being either Backstreet Boys or Nsync, my answer was different. I pledged my allegiance to Hanson. Every inch of my wall from floor to ceiling was covered with magazine cut-outs of brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac.

The first concert I ever attended was at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre in the summer of 1998. Hanson was making their Toronto debut as part of the band’s inaugural Albertane tour. Like all fan girls, I proudly memorized every song on that neon orange Middle of Nowhere CD and can still recall the lyrics to this day.

Once Isaac, Taylor and Zac finally took their positions under the famous amphitheatre roof, I was eagerly anticipating the notes of the first track. To my surprise, Hanson opened up with Spencer Davis’ Gimme Some Lovin’. Not knowing at the time that bands often play covers, I was shocked that Hanson didn’t immediately start playing track number one, Thinking of You, from the Middle of Nowhere album.

Fast forward two decades. Hanson is currently gearing up to embark on their 13th tour. Isaac, 34, Taylor, 32, and Zac Hanson, 29, are industry veterans with over six studio albums under their belts. The Tulsa, OK natives continue to have a dedicated fan base.

I find that Hanson’s music has always had a different sound from the cookie-cutter, heavily auto-tuned pop bands. Since opening up with Spencer Davis’ Gimme Some Lovin’ in ’98, it is evident that Hanson has largely been inspired by Motown, 50s and 60s genres. Last month, Rolling Stone magazine released a list of the 50 greatest boy band songs of all time. Despite Hanson’s chart topping popularity, they did not make the cut. Rolling Stone explained Hanson’s exemption in the opening paragraph claiming that the boys, “kept it too real.”

Going into their 23rd year, Hanson continues to keep it real and finds outlets that challenge them artistically. They opened up two shows for Grammy-nominated artist Ed Sheeran earlier this year after meeting him at a local fair in Tulsa, OK. This year Hanson also released collaborations both with Owl City and Blues Traveler.

“You allow yourself to meld with what they’re doing and try and find how you can benefit. You have to be true to yourself and still represent Hanson but, like anything, there’s a collection of work that you’re contributing to. Let yourself be a producer and do something different,” said Zac in a recent phone interview.

This October, Hanson will be embracing their influences and heading out on the appropriately titled Roots and Rock ‘N Roll tour. A five-track digital EP of the same name was recently released which includes Ed Sheeran, Sly and the Family Stone, and Michael Jackson covers. The tour is unique in the sense that it is a two-night concert event. The first night will cover a large catalogue of songs from bands that inspired Hanson such as Billy Joel and Paul Simon. The first night also includes a bonus after party DJ set with Taylor.

“As a fan there’s always songs you’re going to want to hear from your favourite artists,” explains Zac. “It’s about trying to find a balance between the expected and unexpected. As an artist and creator you change it up each night which allows us to continue to explore the catalogue of music.”

Bands like Cream, Traffic, will be highlighted during the rock and roll portion. Evening number two will consist of Hanson songs which are sure to be crowd-pleasers.Hanson always looks forward to performing in Canada. I remember attending the sold-out 1998 concert when the boys broke the Guinness World Record in Toronto for the loudest crowd at a concert, reaching 140 decibels. “Canadians are loud and that continues to be something that’s true,” recalls Zac. “I noticed how comfortable and similar Canada feels to the United States. There’s a good kinship and we get a great response from fans.”

I have grown up along with the Hanson boys, who are now all married with children. But some things never change. My iTunes library contains the complete Hanson discography and my friends still argue over who was the best ’90s boy band.

A limited number of tickets are still available for the Roots and Rock ‘N Roll tour taking place at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto, ON, on Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015. For more details visit Hanson.net.

Hanson hits Forbes’ 30 Under 30 music fest with businessmen attitude

“I don’t think many people realize that the word ‘strife’ is in an ‘MMMBop’ lyric.”

Isaac Hanson would know, he wrote it.

The eldest Hanson brother quickly rattled off the first few lines of the band’s mega-pop hit over the phone like he’s done this before: “You have so many relationships in this life/only one or two will last/You go through all the pain and strife/then you turn your back and they’re gone so fast.”

And there it was. The bubbly, chart-topping, Grammy-nominated, feel-good song of the late ’90s actually contains the word “strife.” And questions lifelong partnerships. And yet features the distinguishable, boppy scat-like chorus of syllables.

“We always felt that song needed to mean something more than the lyrics and the melody, and it needed to have a certain groundedness in real life,” Hanson continued. Even in 1997, a teenage Hanson and his adolescent brothers Taylor and Zac realized this.

Thirteen years and eight albums later, and no longer the baby-faced, longhaired musicians from Tulsa, Oklahoma, the trio is still in the same frame of mind. “Despite the optimistic nature of much of our music, there’s a certain melancholy to most of our lyrics,” he said. “I often tease that we write happy sad songs.”

Now in their 30s — except for youngest Zac, who hits the big 3-0 on Oct. 22  — the Hansons have a lot to sing happy songs about. They’ve had five studio albums chart in the Top 40 on the Billboard 200, they’re spreading the love through charitable efforts like one-mile barefoot walks before select concerts, and are certified businessmen with their beer company, Mmmhops Pale Ale. Their extensive resume makes them the perfect fit to play the free Forbes Under 30 Music Festival Tuesday at Festival Pier.

Though the brothers’ two distinct audiences of music fans and Mmmhops drinkers don’t see too much crossover, Isaac Hanson, sounding ever the mogul, draws an interesting parallel between his family’s life ventures: beer and music. “In some ways, the creation of beer is like the creation of the song,” he began. “The brewery is the studio, and working with the people in the brewery is much like working with the people in the studio.”

Then comes the comparison of microbreweries and big beer companies being equated with indie labels and giant record companies – and it all starts to make sense.

“There’s a certain similarity in the mind of people who love beer and those who love and write music,” he said. And one of the main focal points on Hanson’s upcoming tour, which officially kicks off here in Philly, is paying homage to the musicians of past and present that have shaped and inspired Hanson themselves. With their Roots & Rock ’N’ Roll tour, the band will skirt through their own catalog and put their spin on tunes from Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, the Darkness and Ed Sheeran — recordings of which are all included on their Roots & Rock ’N’ Roll EP.

It’s a little bit of looking forward and backward, Hanson said. That one band’s career can be affected by both Billy Joel — whose 1983 album An Innocent Man had a profound impact on Hanson — and recent chart-topper Ed Sheeran is a special thing. And that they’re mirroring these influences with their own work, which according to Hanson, has withstood the test of time.

“It’s a rare circumstance when you’ve been doing it as long as we have to be proud of what you did when you were 16,” he said. “I feel very comfortable with that headspace.”

WEEKLY PIC

We’re excited to return to some of our favorite cities. Here’s a picture from a live performance on the ANTHEM World Tour. Don’t forget to tune in to the live broadcast on Yahoo from Chicago on October 8th.

MESSAGE FROM THE BAND

It is amazing how far away something can be and once you are there how fast it seems to have arrived.  We have spent the last four months talking about the upcoming Roots & Rock ‘N’ Roll tour and in the last few weeks we have hit the grindstone doing our best to prepare two amazing sets of music, and now it is finally here.  Next week will begin with a festival in Philly and then the RNR Tour will kick off in Chicago. The final prep is happening now as guitars and drums go into road cases and supplies of drum sticks and batteries get packed away.  Going on tour is a little like going on safari, minus the bug spray, tents, guns, and wild animals.  Tour is like going on a ski trip, everyone needs at least two suitcases to hold all their stuff and no one can figure out how to pack all of their bulky equipment. Many fans around the world will not be able to attend a show on the RNR Tour, but even if you can’t you can still tune in on October 8th for a full concert stream by Yahoo Live.  It is going to be a great way to start things off!  This tour will be full.  Two concerts in every city, After Party, Walks for the Take The Walk Campaign… if you can’t tell we are smiling.  Looking forward to seeing all of you out on the road. #RNRtour #TakeTheWalk #Barefoot #Mmmhops #AfterParty #DanceParty #HANSONtime

Under 30 Summit: A$AP Rocky, Monica Lewinsky, Shaun White, Kelly Osbourne, Ronan Farrow, Fill Roster

By | October 2, 2015

Forbes

The Under 30 Summit kicks off on Sunday, with an exclamation point: The Under 30 Food Festival. It will close with one, too. The Under 30 Music Festival, a free ticketed event produced in partnership with Global Citizen, will end with a performance by the superstar 30 Under 30 list veteran A$AP Rocky. He joins multi-platinum chart-topper Shawn Mendes, crowd favorite Hanson and hip-hop violin sensation Lindsey Stirling. 30 Under 30 alum Ronan Farrow will emcee. Philly area residents can get their free tickets while doing good for the world here.

Meanwhile, the Summit programming will end on Tuesday afternoon with two more superstars: Shaun White, who has turned his numerous gold medals and his old “Flying Tomato” persona into an entrepreneurial juggernaut. And activist Monica Lewinsky, the breakout star of last year’s Under 30 Summit, will return to discuss her whirlwind year since – and her new campaign to end cyberbullying.

More updates: Kelly Osbourne will interview fellow 30 Under 30 veteran Michelle Phan on how over-sharing can translate into millions. U.S. national women’s soccer team members Julie Johnston and Shannon Boxx will join Alex Morgan, both in leading the “Rocky Run” on Tuesday morning and the kickoff panel on the Tuesday program.

The final lineup for the Under 30 Summit is now stacked: Elizabeth Holmes, Vivek Ramaswamy, Stripe founder John Collison, master VC Josh Kopelman, Tinder’s Sean Rad, Dr. Ruth and the Genius Founders, the $1 million Change the World social entrepreneur competition, the “Best Bar Crawl Ever” and about 100 surprises.

Almost 2,000 attendees are registered — last-minute stragglers can apply here.

14 Signs You’re (Still) A Huge Hanson Fan

By | October 1, 2015

WJBQ

The fandom had a name before fandoms were even a thing. We’re the Fansons. And we love Hanson. Yes, those guys who sang MMMBop. No, they’re not girls. Yes, we’ve heard that joke before.

That music video has over 35 million views. At least 2 million of them are me.

Hanson is heading out on tour this fall and it’s the first time since I was 14 that I can’t make it to at least one show on the tour. The closest they’re coming is New York City and it sold out before I could snag tickets. Not to mention, I have a new job hosting The Q Morning Show and something tells me, “I have to go see Hanson perform live for the 18th time,” isn’t a solid excuse to get out of it. I’m sad I’ll miss the shows, but looking at old photos of the brothers cheers me up a little.

I felt so nostalgic looking at photos of my favorite band, that I compiled a list of characteristics that all longtime Hanson fans share. I know Hanson fans will echo my thoughts on this list.

Hanson fans, past and present, what did I miss? What was part of your Hanson fan experience?
