Hanson announces lineup for third Hop Jam, start of the opening band contest

The brothers of Hanson are looking forward to a different experience this year at their third Hop Jam Beer and Music Festival.

It will be the first year that Hanson is not headlining its event. The 2016 Hop Jam will be bigger than ever, with more music and more beer than previous years, but the Hanson brothers will be watching from the audience.

“It’s like this: It’s not an annual Hanson show. It’s an annual Hanson party,” said Zac Hanson last week from their studio in the Brady Arts District. “That means we want to take the stage a lot, but we want to be able to mix it up and add variety. You don’t want people to take it for granted. New beer, new bands, bigger footprint.”

Headlining the 2016 Hop Jam will be indie folk band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. The lineup will also feature The Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr., alt rock band X Ambassadors and Tulsa singer-songwriter John Moreland.

Like the previous two years, Hanson and the Tulsa World will host an Opening Band Contest, soliciting submissions from Oklahoma bands that want to open the Hop Jam festival.

The event is set for May 22 in the Brady Arts District. Admission is once again free. Tickets can be purchased for beer sales, and VIP packages will be available.

And speaking of beer, this year will see the number of brewers more than tripled from the first event.

“We had 15 breweries the first year. We’ll have 60 this year,” Taylor Hanson said.

It will include brewers from 20 states and more than 10 countries, including most if not all of the brewers in Oklahoma.

Last year’s festival saw the beer section, limited to those age 21 and older, expand north on Main Street past Cameron Street. But this year, the festival is expanding east.

The Guthrie Green will be incorporated into this year’s festival, creating an all-ages family area with kids activities throughout the downtown park.

It will also be a place to hear even more live, local music. Of the submissions to the Opening Band Contest, which is now open, five will be chosen as finalists by Hanson. Voting by the public will commence, and the winning band will open the show on the main stage of the festival. The other four bands will play on the Guthrie Green stage.

“If you’re one of the top bands, you’re going to play the festival,” Taylor Hanson said. “There will be a real balance between set changeover so people can catch more shows throughout the day.”

Submissions may be made starting at 9 a.m. Monday at tulsaworld.com/hopjam. Submissions will close at 11:59 p.m. April 18. Once the finalists are chosen, voting will begin April 25 and close May 6.

Fans will get a preview of the festival with the five bands in the running will play Fassler Hall for the Hop Jam Pub Crawl, set for May 2. More details on the Pub Crawl will be announced.

As Hanson steps aside this year, the band hopes to lay the groundwork for future Hop Jam festivals where the band is not the headline attraction, but still plays a big role in putting on a festival that reaches a broad audience.

“The thing we’re building is not Hanson, it’s not Edward Sharpe, it’s not Robert Randolph. It’s Hop Jam,” Taylor Hanson said.

“The first reason that you’re going is because you know that event is at a quality level and you’re going to go. It’s still a one-day event. It’s a tight group of really engaging performers. They’re a part of something … the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.”

Hop Jam 2016

By | March 14, 2016

We’re excited to announce the 3rd annual Hop Jam Craft Beer and Music Festival on Sunday May 22nd. After record attendance for two years running, the celebrated downtown festival will again take place in Tulsa’s thriving Brady Arts District, and we’re focused on providing a richer experience for you, with a new 2nd stage, family activities and double last year’s attending breweries. Event tickets are available now for purchase here.

More than 60 breweries will be on site, representing 20+ states and 10+ countries. The diverse craft offering reflects our mission to feature a wide variety of breweries, while also establishing a platform for new craft breweries to enter the Oklahoma market for the first time, helping to draw attention to the thriving local scene.

The main stage will be headlined by a dynamic live performance from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, as well as Albert Hammond Jr., X Ambassadors, Tulsa’s own John Moreland, Chase Kerby + The Villains and more. HANSON will continue to curate and present the main stage music lineup.

We’re also hoping to create a richer event experience by offering a broader ticket selection this year. New premium Craft Beer VIP tickets include even earlier access, special Hop Talks featuring a panel of craft brewers, and access to a special indoor space including all day food and beverages. Premium Hop Jam Music VIP tickets include reserved seating in the festival main stage area, with all day food and beverages in an indoor space available to all ages.

We’re excited to bring back the hugely popular state-wide opening band contest in partnership with the Tulsa World, which will provide an opportunity for an Oklahoma artist to perform the opening set on the festival main stage. We’ve also added a new Park Stage at Guthrie Green, so we can extend more opportunities for local bands – the top runners in the contest will win the chance to perform on that second stage.

Our site is expanding dramatically, with the Main Street-centered craft beer area doubling in size, and also adding a beer garden and games lawn. The all-ages area of the festival is expanding to encompass the Guthrie Green, to provide space for more family oriented activities and entertainment.

We are excited to partner with you again to raise funds to support the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma through the raffle of a custom-made Hop Guitar, crafted after the festival logo, and signed by brewers and artists taking part in the event. The family activities and a special auction in the Hop Jam Park area will also help support another Tulsa non-profit, Emergency Infant Services, who work to provide for the needs of infants and children whose families are in crisis.

WEEKLY PIC

Here’s Zac painting for the gallery for HANSON Day. Excited to share what he’s working on with you all. Who’s joining us?

MESSAGE FROM THE BAND

This week we released a new collaboration we did with some friends here in Tulsa at Dead Armadillo Brewing: The Inland Porter.  It is a limited release only available in Oklahoma, but we are really excited to see how people respond to it and it only seems appropriate to be sharing new beer with the announcement of The Hop Jam 2016 line up on Monday.  Like a big birthday present for Taylor, Monday we will be announcing the list of breweries and the lineup of bands taking the stage at this year’s Hop Jam.  Beer + Music = Awesome and in 2016 we plan to have more of both than ever.

HANSON Day continues to take shape. We have been pulling together all the tracks for Karaoke, working on the paintings for the HANSON Day Gallery and maybe most exciting, finalizing plans to record the 2016 members EP at the end of this month.  All week we have been talking about music, and how we want to make more of it.  It sounds like a funny thing coming from a band, but it’s something we talk about all the time and with a little luck we will make it happen in 2016.  More to come next week.

Isaac, Taylor and Zac

The new craft beer, called the Inland Porter, hit shelves this week. The beer is named after the Port of Catoosa.

Wholesalers began picking up the beer Monday, and it is now on shelves. Only 75 cases of the beer have been brewed at this time.

A launch party for the new brew will be held March 21 at Fassler Hall in downtown Tulsa at 7. Another launch will take place the next day at Fassler Hall in Oklahoma City.

The Hanson brothers said they wanted to bring the world a light Tulsa beer from the brewers in town.

Beer brings a lot of people together, even rock stars and former Lutheran pastors.

Hanson Brothers Beer Co. and Dead Armadillo Brewing Co. are teaming up for a beer that will be on store shelves by the end of this week.

The Hanson brothers have sold millions of records and started a beer company because they are passionate about craft beer. The same is true of Dead Armadillo’s brewmaster Mason Beecroft. The former Lutheran pastor turned brewmaster knows his beers.

The collaboration between the companies means one thing for consumers: great craft beers. The beer they came up with is called Inland Porter, named after Tulsa’s Port of Catoosa, the most inland river port in the United States.

“Really the collaboration started with saying, ‘How can we start brewing with these guys? How can we bring in some more beer?’” Taylor Hanson said.

“The next conversation was let’s do something together. It’s a way of saying hey we are brewing together, we’re working together, we are both proud of Tulsa. This beer was born out of those conversations,” Hanson said.

There is a reason they chose a porter for their collaboration brew.

“I have a special affection for porters; it was the first beer that turned me on to craft beer,” Beecroft said. “It’s an American version of a traditional English session beer that comes in a 6.5 percent alcohol by volume. I think it hit the mark for being a nice seasonable porter.”

Isaac Hanson has another way of knowing if a beer is a hit. “My wife said, ‘You are going to make a dark beer?’ Then I poured it for her and she went, ‘Oh, pour me another.’ That is a good problem to have,” he said.

This limited-release beer is scheduled to be shipped out this week and should be in liquor stores soon. But there is another way to try it. The Hansons and Dead Armadillo crew will be at Fassler Hall, 304 S. Elgin Ave., on March 21 for a pint night to celebrate Inland Porter, and on March 22 in Oklahoma City’s Fassler Hall, 421 N.W. 10th St., they will do it again.

If you don’t get to the liquor store or to Fassler Hall, you will have other opportunities to try some beers from the collaboration. Both companies plan on more collaboration beers in the future.

“We are excited for people to just try it. With Hanson Brothers, we are going to start introducing a lot of seasonable beers and are really excited about turning people on to new flavors. This is just a little bit of a taste of that from us and the Dead Armadillo guys,” Taylor Hanson said.
