A Deeper Side To Hanson?

By | January 22, 2011

Female First

The trio have matured into a sophisticated pop/rock trio.

The family trio Hanson are one of the first bands people think of when the phrase “one hit wonder” is thrown around. Their hit ‘MMMBop’ was huge, and we all still remember it. It was catchy, infectious and almost the perfect pop song. That’s all we know them from though, which is far from the end of the story.

It’d probably be surprising to almost everyone (it certainly was in the office) to hear that not only are the trio still making music, but they’ve grown into a mature, classy pop-rock act. There’s a new sophistication to their sound, and their development and maturity is the reason for their longevity.

In fact, a look at their website sees no obvious mention of ‘MMMBop’, with it becoming clear that Hanson really have moved on. They’ve embraced an admirable DIY work ethic, and have developed into great songwriters.

Furthermore, Zac Hanson is the youngest songwriter nominee in the history of the Grammy Awards, an incredible feat for a so-called “one hit wonder”.

Really, Hanson have become so much more than the laughing stock they are widely regarded as. They’re no longer long-haired, fresh looking pre-teens trying to grasp at 15 minutes of fame. Hanson have become a sophisticated, consistent pop act, with all three brothers (Isaac, Zac and Taylor) developing into serviceable, dare I say talented, musicians.

Also admirable is the band’s reluctance to rely on their name value from their early success. However, by sticking with their surname, they’ve not run away from it either. Still a part of their live set, ‘MMMBop’ sits in the background. To leave out such a vital part of their history would be wrong, but it’s good that Hanson don’t want it overshadowing their career.

It’s surprising that Hanson have shown longevity, still in the business after so long. People who are sceptical of their talent or deepness should bare in mind that the original version of ‘MMMBop’ was a tender ballad, which garnered them little attention.

I realise there’s some irony in the fact that in writing about a different side to Hanson, I’ve referenced their musical stigma so often. It is a vital part of how the public remembers Hanson, which is quite unfair.

They honestly have matured and developed into a great pop-rock outfit that show a solid understanding of how to make fantastic, DIY pop music. Hanson seem content with where they’re at now, but I hope this may prompt more people to give them a chance.

What do you think? Do you remember Hanson from the first time round, or have you listened to their later material and agree with what we’ve said? Let us know.

Flashback Friday: Hanson, Metallica Tours Off To Strong Sales Start

By | January 21, 2011

All Business

With the summer concert season approaching, North American tours by Hanson and Metallica are already reporting strong ticket sales. The Hanson showing is particularly encouraging, as it follows a trend of strong sales by youth-oriented acts. Hanson notched a sellout in less than 20 minutes Saturday in the Detroit market for a June 29 show at Pine Knob Amphitheatre. Also sold out is a June 23 show at Toronto’s Molson Amphitheatre and a June 26 show at the Boston-area Great Woods Amphitheater, which went clean in less than two hours. More than 15,000 tickets have been sold for a July 12 show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, which promoter Bill Silva calls a “tremendous feat” for the market. The tour, which has 11 dates confirmed, begins June 20 at Molson Centre in Montreal and includes stops in Atlanta and Hanson’s hometown of Tulsa, Okla.

The youth movement is seen as a positive sign for the industry. “I think we’ve finally heard from the next generation, and that may be very healthy for the business,” says Detroit promoter Rick Franks. “Hanson, Backstreet Boys, and Spice Girls are selling faster than everybody else we’ve got on sale.” He adds, “The voice of a younger demographic is being heard, and hopefully they will embrace the live music industry for years to come.”

On the other side of the pop music spectrum, perennial heavy metal favorite Metallica’s first headlining shed tour since 1994 also has notched a number of sellouts, beginning with a show June 24 at Coral Sky Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, Fla. Last year, Metallica reported more than $32 million in grosses from 72 shows, fourth among all tours and first among non-stadium tours, and this year’s outing comes on the heels of a successful arena tour of Japan and Australia. “It doesn’t get much more consistent than Metallica when it comes to touring and tickets sales,” says Tony DiCioccio of Metallica’s management team at Q-Prime. The tour, which is being promoted on a market-by-market basis, has about 40 dates on the books, with most venues selling out the first week.

Donate to Hope from the Heartland

By | January 17, 2011

A fan has decided to try and raise $14,000 for Hope from the Heartland by Hanson Day 2011 – check out the details and donate if you can:

The Project:

Hanson have been involved in charity work to benefit the lives of people suffering from poverty and AIDS in South Africa for years. Through their music, their website TakeTheWalk.net, and one mile barefoot walks hosted by the band and their fans the world over, they have raised money to build schools, drill water wells, provide shoes, and help pregnant women with HIV prevent the disease from being passed on to their unborn children.

May 6th, 2011 is the 14th annual “Hanson Day”. What better way to celebrate the positive influence that Isaac, Taylor, and Zac Hanson have had on our lives for 14 years than to improve the lives of others in their name?

All money raised from this campaign will go to Hope From The Heartland, which is a non-profit based in Tulsa, OK that is associated with TakeTheWalk.net. You can donate anything from $10 up, so please give whatever you can. If you can’t afford to donate now, please keep this site in mind for when you can afford to. I personally plan to ask people to donate money instead of buying me birthday gifts this year (my birthday is May 5th haha).

If/when you make a donation, you can check a box to add a dedication. Even if you decide to donate anonymously, you can use the dedication to leave a message for Hanson, or a message about what this cause means to you personally. I’m considering (at the end of this fundraiser), printing up the entire list of donations and dedications and sending it to them so that they can see how much you guys raised and the messages of thanks and support you wanted to share with them.

Even if you can’t donate, you can help by spreading the word to those that can! If you want to tweet a link to this site or post it on Facebook or MySpace or Tumblr or anywhere else, you can use: http://tinyurl.com/hansonday2011

Thanks guys!

A Personal Message:

Hanson Day 2011 is a particularly special Hanson Day for me, because I was 14 when MMMBop and Middle of Nowhere came out, which means that this year Hanson will officially have been part of my life for half of my life! I’m sure I’m not the only fan celebrating that fact this year.

I was trying to think of something to do to show Hanson how grateful we are for all of the music, memories, friends, and inspiration that they have brought into our lives over the past 14 years, and I decided to set up this fundraiser in hopes of raising $14,000 to donate to Hope From The Heartland (the non-profit associated with TakeTheWalk.net) in their honor.

When you think about it, $14 isn’t even the price of a CD or a concert ticket, it’s barely the price of a few cups of coffee! I figure that if 1,000 Hanson fans could donate just $14 each between now and May 6th, we could easily make that goal!
