Entering a time warp with Hanson at the Phoenix

By | February 12, 2012

Blog TO

Hanson LiveLet’s enter the time warp.

I saw Hanson 14 years ago. Yes, I was bat-shit crazy for the three goldilocks (especially Zac- “The funny one!”). I called a number in the back of Tiger Beat Magazine that promised I could speak with Hanson. That number turned out to be some prerecorded shit from Barbados, obviously, and cost my parents about $80.

Hanson LiveI’m telling you this because despite my former fanatic ways, it’s been 14 long years since then. My musical tastes have changed and surely, I thought, theirs had too. Wrong. The predominately female crowd screamed even louder than I had remembered, groups of gals with homemade Hanson shirts were in full force, and the pushing and shoving to get closer to the golden gods was something I hadn’t experienced since, I don’t know, Hanson in 1997.

Hanson LiveThey played hits from their debut album Middle of Nowhere, (yes even MMMBop), while mostly sticking to songs from their latest four albums. (Yes, that’s right, they actually have 10 albums). After the success of Middle of Nowhereand some rocky patches with their then label, Mercury Records, Hanson started their own independent label which has allowed them to record, well, a considerable library of material.

Hanson LiveThe show at The Phoenix was actually sold out days before they were scheduled to appear. Free from former back up musicians a la “The Mmmbop” era, the three brothers competently played catchy pop tunes about love, longing, heartbreak, and well, mmm…bopping. Zac and Isaac each took a turn performing a solo acoustic song, while Taylor (let’s face it, the star) sat back and watched.

Hanson Live“With You in Your Dreams” (a song about the loss of their grandmother) still brought people to tears, “MMMBop” made people go manic and one of their latest hits — “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin'” made me feel like I was caught in a flash mob. Think, your mom and all her friends dancing to their old faves and not giving a shit what they look like or who’s watching. Which is kind of badass, actually. I commend you, Hanson fans.

Hanson LiveSo basically a Hanson concert in 2012 isn’t much different than one in 1997. Same deal but I could smell weed. And whenever I had the urge to sing along I bit the straw in my gin and tonic really hard.

Loretta Lynn, Desmond Child Inducted Into Songwriters Hall of Fame

By | February 12, 2012

Rolling Stone

While the rest of the show-biz crowd gets its annual ya-ya’s out at over-the-top affairs like the Grammys and the Oscars, songwriters celebrate themselves in a comparatively understated (but equally impressive) manner at the yearly Songwriters Hall of Fame inductions. For the 39th songsmiths’ shindig, honorees ran the gamut from country queens to pop princes: Desmond Child, Albert Hammond, Loretta Lynn, Alan Menken, John Sebastian were inducted, while Paul Anka, Anne Murray, John Rzeznik and Milt Okun were honored.

Joan Jett presented hitmeister Desmond Child with his award after he opened the show with a medley of blockbusters he penned for others, from Aerosmith’s “Dude Looks Like a Lady” to Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer.” When pressed, Child admitted his favorite child is “a song I wrote with Hanson called ‘Weird,’ because it’s about being different, and I grew up poor, I grew up being Latin, I grew up being gay, and now I’m fat!” Lovin’ Spoonful leader John Sebastian backed the Naked Brothers Band on his own “Do You Believe in Magic,” and offered a light-hearted perspective on the writing process, musing, “The best part about songwriting is that it’s something you can do that requires no raw material and creates no waste.”

Danny Aiello and former New York Yankee Bernie Williams turned up for Towering Song Award winner “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” John Legend crooned an estrogen-stirring version of Paul Anka’s “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” and Natasha Bedingfield performed Menken’s “Colors of the Wind.” But it was Loretta Lynn who wound up stealing the show with her classic “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” returning at the crowd’s insistence for an unplanned encore of “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind).”

Hanson: 20 years’ worth of songs, still bringing down the house

By | February 11, 2012

Montreal Gazette

MONTREAL – Hanson have always handled their detractors with grace, humility and a sometimes shockingly bona fide turn-the-other-cheek mentality. Case in point: In 2005, a long eight years after the release of the ludicrously ubiquitous pop single MMMBop – from Hanson’s 10-million-selling third album, the 1997 major-label debut Middle of Nowhere – there were still those who saw the upside of being a hater.

The student council of Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown, Pa., in an effort to raise funds for Hurricane Katrina victims, decided to “annoy the money” out of their student body by playing MMMBop continuously between classes on the school sound system. Called Stop the Bop, the psychological-warfare campaign would only be discontinued once the fundraising goal of $3,000 had been reached. And then Hanson got wind of it.

Rather than circle the band wagons, brothers Taylor (vocals, keyboard, guitar), Isaac (guitar, piano, vocals) and Zac (drums, keyboard, vocals) instead matched the more than $3,000 raised, and then gave each of the 659 students at the school a copy of their 2004 album Underneath.

It’s a wonderful tale of open-hearted altruism on one hand, and possibly cynical marketing genius on the other. Which is all fine and good. But when the band gets dissed big time, don’t they ever just want to throw down the gloves and kick someone’s butt?

“Ohhh,” laughs Zac, the youngest of the three brothers. “Um, yes. I mean, I’m a dude – of course I want to do that! I’m actually sort of known in the band for being the one that gets in fights. It’s not public things. I don’t go fight Jay-Z or punch a photographer or anything, but if somebody’s going to get in trouble with a police officer or a federal agent on an airplane, it’s me. Because I’m gonna be the guy that’s like, ‘I don’t like this rule; I’m gonna push it.’”

Could brothers Taylor and Isaac step up if need be?

“I think Taylor would do it for the experience, and I think Isaac would be like, ‘It’s too much work to go to jail, and I just pressed my suit, so I’m gonna sit this one out.’”

The brothers Hanson – who all still live, with their respective spouses and children, in Tulsa, Okla., where they grew up – are a study in single-minded perseverance. They released their first two albums independently, and another five on major label Island Def Jam Records, but were never able to recapture the marketing magic of Middle of Nowhere, which yielded five hits, including MMMBop. Disillusioned, in 2001 the trio started their own independent label, 3CG Records, releasing another three records – including their most recent, 2010’s Shout It Out – and have never looked back.

Shout It Out and its infectious-bordering-on-contagious lead single, Thinking ’Bout Somethin’ – a signature Hanson mix of old soul and pristine pop – take their cues from and pay their dues to rhythm-and-blues pioneers of the past – folks like Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles. To the extent that, in a tip of the fedora to The Blues Brothers, the band reinvented that movie’s classic jive-stroll dance number for the video of Thinking ’Bout Somethin’.

“We love The Blues Brothers,” says Zac. “It’s one of the first movies that really connected with us, because it’s this amazing combination of bad humour, great music and, well, car chases. So for young guys it was just this perfect thing. (The video) is us recreating one of our favourite scenes from the movie, where Ray Charles starts playing Shake a Tail Feather on the Rhodes. We just sped it up a little bit and it connects almost perfectly with our song.”

Speaking of young guys, the members of Hanson have been performing together for 20 years this year, and they’re still freshly, weirdly post-adolescent. (Isaac is 31, Taylor weighs in at 28 and Zac is 26.) Perspective check: When the brothers started playing together in 1992, Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit was still charting around the world. Teen spirit, indeed.

“Yeah, we’re still pretty young,” says Zac. “We’ve been a band for 20 years, and this year I’ll be 27.” An age at which many bands start (or in the case of the aforementioned Nirvana, end).

“What can I say? When we were beginning, we liked these young artists. I mean, how old were Chuck Berry and Elvis and Michael Jackson when they started? They were teenagers and tweens, and that was our reference. We were looking at these guys who started extraordinarily young and we just said, ‘Why not?’ ”

Fair enough. But you were 6.

“I was 6, yes,” he laughs. “And in truth, I probably didn’t realize I was joining a band at that point. I think I just thought that, ‘Oh, this is fun, I can play GI Joes or I can stand up in front of an audience and they’ll all cheer for me.’ Realistically, I don’t think I joined the band until I was about 9. You know, consciously. Prior to that, I was sort of just there.”

Which brings us back to MMMBop, the music not just of their youth, but that of many millions of fans at one point. It’s a scaled-down but still loyal tribe that affords Hanson continued recording and touring success. Even if it means having to play MMMBop every night and make like you’re enjoying it, right?

“Um … yes,” Zac says. “The truth is a lot of fans expect us to play MMMBop, but we do it because we want to play the songs that people enjoy. We realize that the connection with the band is based on this music that’s part of their lives, and when you don’t play those songs, you’re sort of telling them that that part of their life isn’t important. And that’s turning your back on your fans.”

Hanson performs Saturday at 8 p.m. at Corona Theatre, 2490 Notre Dame St. W., with Carly Rae Jepsen. Tickets cost $29.50. Call 514-931-2088 or 514-790-2525, or visit www.theatrecorona.com or www.evenko.ca

HANSON IN TORONTO FOR “SHOUT IT OUT WORLD TOUR”

By | February 10, 2012

Mr Will W

L to R: Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson & Mr. Will-W.
They’ve sold over 16 million albums worldwide and have been nominated for three GRAMMY Awards, but where have Hanson been?  The Trio of Brothers from Oklahoma first rose to meteoric prominence at a young age in 1997 with their major label Debut, Middle of Nowhere from Mercury Records.  You would hard-pressed to find anyone who can’t remember their massive hit, mmmbopeven to this day.
Due to some corporate changes resulting in a merger with Island Def Jam, the Band got caught in the shuffle, resulting in creative differences and a lack of support.  In 2003, Hanson launched their own Label, 3CG Records and since then have been releasing their Music independently.  Although their success these days is far more modest than before, they still are doing it well.  Their latest Disc Shout it Out landed in the Top 30 of the U.S. Billboard Hot 200Chart, peaking at number 15 on the U.S. Billboard Digital Albums Chart.  They still are pulling-in strong reviews across the board and selling-out theatres with their Shout it Out World Tour and although they aren’t really that much older than them, they have influenced a new generation of Pop Stars.  Katy Perry even paid her respects to the Trio – all whom are Fathers now – in her Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F) Music Video.
Hanson decided to drop-by for a quick appearance on CityTV‘s Breakfast Television with Dina Pugliese this morning in advance of their Concert tonight atThe Phoenix Concert Hall.  The great-looking Band performed a couple tracks and watched in awe as a Sommelier use a sabre to de-cork a bottle of Champagne and nibbled on some rack of Lamb, prepared live on air.   Parking their Tour Bus right up against the Studio, they were super-friendly as expected, to stop and pose for a quick Photo after their appearance.  “Wow! Nice jacket!”,Isaac said to my dog Billy.

Hanson returns–at last

By | February 10, 2012

Inquirer Lifestyle

We’ll forever remember them for their 1997 hit single “Mmmbop,” and how young they were when they shot to pop music fame. Now, over a decade later, Zac, Taylor and Isaac Hanson are staunch health activists, run their own record label, and are all husbands and fathers.

And through it all, they’ve never stopped creating music.

Hanson will be here next month for a two-night concert on March 30 (Smart Araneta Coliseum, Cubao) and 31 (Waterfront Cebu). It’s the band’s second visit to the Philippines; their first was in 2004 to promote the album “Underneath.”

Their upcoming concerts are part of the “Shout It Out” World Tour, which showcases their latest album of the same title.

“We have eclectic tastes in music, but our first and strongest influence is late ’50s and early ’60s soul music and rock ’n’ roll,” said Hanson frontman Taylor. “That music is a direct inspiration on ‘Shout It Out.’”

“The concert will definitely feature the music on ‘Shout It Out,’ but it will also highlight songs from throughout the band’s career,” he added.

Hanson has toured the US, Latin America, and Europe, and are now holding shows in Canada.

Super got the chance to ask Taylor more about what’s keeping the band busy, and why they’ve (finally!) decided to come back.

What brought you back to the Philippines?

There was not one specific thing that made this tour possible; it was a combination of timing and finding the right partner for the return concerts. We have wanted to come back for some time, and we are really excited it is finally able to happen.

Was there ever a time when you stopped creating songs/ music?

We have never stopped making music, but there have been long periods where we have not been able to make touring outside the US a priority, and that makes it difficult to stay connected with many fans. Thankfully, we are changing that with this coming tour.

You are staunch supporters of the kids in Africa, especially those stricken with HIV/AIDS. How were you made aware of their plight? What do you continue to do for them?

In early 2007, we began our “Take The Walk” campaign, where we engage fans and others to take one-mile barefoot walks to connect with the needs of those facing extreme poverty and HIV/AIDS. We were inspired to begin this effort after we took a trip to South Africa and Mozambique in early 2006.

Our broader mission has been to inspire individuals to take action in tangi ble ways, and focus on equally tangible needs, like medicine, water, education, shoes and access to healthcare. We have several key partners who help us to provide for those needs, and our mission continues through raising funds and encouraging people all over the world to organize barefoot walks for the cause.

You have your own record label now, 3 Car Garage (3CG). Do you manage other artists as well?

We have run our own record company for nine years, beginning in 2003 with the release of our third studio album. We have not focused on releasing other artists, but we look forward to playing that role in the future. Our label’s purpose is to facilitate releasing and marketing our music in a way that we feel builds a career and a united creative vision for the band.

Do your families tour with you? Are your kids showing any interest in entering the music industry, too—and would you allow them, if they are?

We are all married with children now: Isaac has two children; me four, Zac two. Our families do join us on the road sometimes, but not always. All of our kids are surrounded by music so it’s always a possibility that they could choose to make music, but we will let them decide for themselves like we did.

Lastly, any preconcert message for your fans?

Firstly, thank you so much for your patience over many years of no concerts, and we are really excited to finally bring the new tour and music back to the Philippines.

Toronto Life: Hanson

Toronto Life

There’s no way to put this that won’t make you feel old: all three members of Hanson, the trio of blond brothers who very briefly owned the top of the charts with “MMMBop,” are married with children. (Yes, even the youngest brother, Zac, who was 12 when they first hit and behaved like the “before” in a Ritalin ad.) They’re a little longer in the tooth, but they still write songs for the ideal AM station that plays nothing but the Jackson 5, Katrina and the Waves and, well, them.

Hanson gives sneak peek of new album ‘Shout It Out’

It’s been 15 years since Hanson topped the pop charts with their catchy tune MMMBop. The three brothers have been actively recording since, but their latest release Shout It Out is garnering a lot of buzz.

The album was released in the United States in 2010 and is set for release here in Canada this April.

“We wanted to do a proper Canadian release so we’re coming back in April and we’ll do more promotional stuff around the record, as well,” frontman Isaac Hanson said.

Isaac, Taylor and Zac stopped by BT Friday to perform two singles from the latest album — Thinking ‘Bout Something and Shout It Out. Watch the attached video to see the performance.

The band plays Friday night at the Phoenix.
