Boy Meets World: Taylor Hanson

I know I don’t need to ask if you rememember Taylor Hanson (we both know you still have his poster taped/framed above your bed). The lover-boy, middle child of the Hanson trio just turned thirty, and he’s got a new album (with his bros, duh) coming out this summer–which means he’s got two major reasons to celebrate. But before he parties it up, we figured he needed a slap of reality. Yup, you guessed it–it’s time for a round of BOY MEETS WORLD. -ALI HOFFMAN

THE NEWS: Beyonce and Andre 3000 covered Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” for The Great Gatsby Soundtrack
Taylor’s View: “People feel like it is too soon to cover an Amy Winehouse song? Well, you know, honestly I think it’s probably too much thought going into that subject. I think you’ve got Beyonce, who’s good at what she does. Andre 3000 is great at what he does. Amy Winehouse was loved. And, hey, you’ve got a great song. I personally don’t don’t have any issue with that.”

THE NEWS: FDA Approves Over-the-Counter Plan B Morning-After Pill for Women 15 and Older
Taylor’s View: ”I think access to birth control in that age group is an issue that goes way beyond whether you can go in and get a pill at 15. I see it as a technicality of a much bigger conversation. Ultimately people and their choices go back to things like family and the choices you’re making at that age. What does that say about our culture that we are making that available for such young people?”Bo

THE NEWS: iPhone users considering trading in their cells for Samsung’s new Galaxy S4
Taylor’s View: ”I do have an iPhone. I have had many iPhone(s). Mac has won over and over by creating really high quality products and being the first to really make things attainable to people. Apple’s pitfall is having the ego that simply being Apple people are going to consume their product. So they’ve got some competition? That’s a good thing. That’s how great stuff gets created. We need an iPhone that can make a pop tart. That is my answer.”

THE NEWS: Monkeys Are Adept at Picking Up Social Cues, Research Shows
Taylor’s View: “This is my favorite question so far. Monkeys, yeah, you need to learn to branch out and don’t go with the crowd. I think monkeys need a pep-talk, and they need to find their own path. Where is the monkey leadership? Don’t be like a crab. Be different.”

Hanson Gives Us The Skinny On Who They’re Most Excited To See At The 2013 Mixtape Festival

VH1

Mixtape Festival 2013

After a highly successful debut last year, the Mixtape Festival will be returning to Hershey, PA on July 26 and 27 this year. The festival, presented by Live Nation and VH1, marks the long-awaited return of TLC, and will also feature performances from the likes of Train, New Kids On The Block, Hanson, and more!

Speaking of Isaac, Taylor and Zac, we recently pulled them aside while they were here at VH1 headquarters in Times Square and asked them who they were most excited to perform alongside of (and watch!) at this year’s Mixtape Festival. Watch the video of their response above, and be sure to mark May 10 on your calendar: That’s the day that tickets for this amazing experience will go on sale.

Fan Of The Month May:

By | May 1, 2013

Name: Rachael

Age: 26
Location: Buffalo, NY

What is the very first memory of Hanson that you have?:

It was spring of 1997. My cousin called me on the phone and told me to

turn on the radio to hear MMMBop. She told me who Hanson was and said

she was really into them. A month later she was over my house and we

were watching TV and stumbled upon MTV and the MMMBop video was

playing. It was love at first site for me and that’s when the Hanson

obsession officially began. In September of 97, I begged my mom to buy

the MON cassette and when I got home, I listened to it non-stop.

How many times have you seen Hanson in concert? Favorite concert

memory?:

I’ve seen Hanson almost 60 times. I’ve started to lose count. I have

too many good memories to write here. After 60 shows, it’s all one big

happy blur. lol

What is your favorite Hanson song, and why?:

I hate having to pick. I like a lot.

Why do you like/love Hanson?:

This can only be answered by a quote, “From the outside, looking in,

you could never understand, but from the inside looking out, you could

never begin to explain.”

How long have you been a Hanson fan?:

since 1997!

Why should you be FAN OF THE MONTH?:

I love Hanson like so many others.

Radio Feedback: Hanson On MmmBop’s First Spin

Welcome to Radio Feedback, Radio.com’s weekly feature where we ask artists to wax nostalgic on the first time they heard themselves on the radio.

“We were just a garage band that got lucky that our first record became something far-reaching,” Taylor Hanson told Radio.com. “We’ve spent the last 16 years continuing to do that, and ‘MMMBop’ is a big part of that story,”

It was nearly impossible to go anywhere the summer of 1997 and not hear Hanson’s “MMMBop” on the radio. The song lead to three GRAMMY nominations for Hanson, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Best Pop Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocal. At age 12, drummer Zac Hanson became the youngest GRAMMY-nominated songwriter ever.

Celebrating their 21st anniversary as a band this year, the brothers Hanson (Taylor, Zac and Isaac) recently sat down with Radio.com to discuss the song that made them a household name and where they were the very first time they heard it on the radio.

“The first time we heard our song was in New York City,” Zac recalled.

Taylor and Isaac chimed in with the specifics.

“I remember we were traveling around, doing promotion, trying to get the record off the ground and we were getting into our van and on came ‘MMMBop,’” Taylor said. “We all sat and listened.”

“Actually, in Times Square, getting out going to the Renaissance Hotel,” Isaac added.

“‘MMMBop’ holds a special place in our history for one because it introduced us to the world,” Taylor added. “That song carries such a different meaning to different people. To some people it’s the pop song that got played a thousand times that summer. We’ve had conversations with everybody from John Lasseter, who runs Pixar, to Michael Stipe to Fiona Apple to Billy Joel, about the way that song entered pop culture or somebody’s day or year or summer. It has it’s little moment which is one of the amazing things that few people ever get to share with the world.”

Written as kids, Taylor explained that the song itself is about how relationships are fleeting and things come and go and it’s those few things that matter that you have to hold onto.

“The idea of building things that matter and thinking about the long run is really what our career has been for the last 15 years because we’ve always been doing this for the music,” he added. “The message of the song is it’s about the music. It’s a fun song, it’s a groovy song and it came from listening to Jackson Five, old rock & roll, doo-wop.”

The band hasn’t slowed down since that summer of ’97. Their sixth studio album ANTHEM is due out June 18 and soon after they’ll embark on a world tour.

“As a band you just want to make great music that will last and stick with people and affect people’s lives and be something that they can take with them over years and years,” Zac said. “Success is something you’re always hoping for because it means that you’re doing that and it also means that you don’t have to have another job.”

“And yes, when Zac was 11 he was thinking about that kind of stuff,” Isaac joked.
