NEW
Message From The Band

The North American portion of the ANTHEM World Tour has come to an end. Even though it is always bittersweet to end something that is going so well, we were happy to finish this tour in Charlotte, NC with an audience that seemed equally ready to follow us on our upcoming European tour as they were excited to be sharing in the final notes of this one! This was a really good run. It is hard to speak to what exactly makes one tour better than the next, but this was a great one for us. Friends have a lot to do with it. We were lucky to share the stage with some very talented musicans, Paul McDonald (and posse) and David Ryan Harris, we have an amazing crew that keep the bus and a million other things rolling in the right direction each day, and an incredibly talented band that back us up each night whether we are playing a HANSON classic or a bad rendition of “Livin’ La Vida Loca”. Even though being a band is a lot of work, when you have good people around you helping to bear the load, you almost forget.

We are all happy to be off the road this week to get a little R&R and spend Thanksgiving with our families. We have a lot to be thankful for!

Isaac, Taylor and Zac

My First Hanson Concert: ANTHEM World Tour

By | November 22, 2013

Name: Marianne
Which Tour? ANTHEM
Date: November 17, 2013
City/State: Moncton
I Went With: My Best Friend, Jessica

I expected the show to:
Be amazing, and it was! I’ve been a Hanson fan FOREVER and was thrilled I was finally going to see them in concert. I also got a Meet and Greet which made my childhood dream come true!

My favorite song they did was:
Ugh, so hard to choose. I would have to narrow it down to “Where’s the Love” (my favorite song from Middle of Nowhere and from my childhood) and their acoustic cover of Too Much Heaven by the Bee Gees. THAT was incredible.

A funny thing that happened was:
The concert happened to fall on Isaac’s birthday and Taylor came out with a cake. Then proceeded to do a cover of Livin La Vida Loca while doing this crazy dance. It was hilarious and apparently the inside joke is even more so!

Live review: Hanson, Amos' Southend (11/20/2013)

By | November 21, 2013

Creative Loafing Charlotte

Hanson
Amos’ Southend
Nov. 20, 2013

Going to Hanson’s show at Amos’ Southend on Nov. 20, 2013, felt like entering a time warp back to 1997. The only thing different, in fact, would be that the screaming teenage girls have turned into screaming adults who have dragged their husbands along for the ride.

The best part? Those “dragged” husbands usually catch the hysteria in the room the moment Hanson begins its concert. Nowhere else will you see so many straight men dancing and screaming for other men – maybe at a football game.

What immediately comes to most people’s mind when you say “Hanson” is one of two things – “Those ‘MMMbop’ guys?” or “They’re still together?” Because they are brothers, breaking up would never be a smart career move, but let the masses think what they will.

Nevertheless, people who immediately judge them based on one poppy, infectious hit from 1997 (that some of them still listen to as a guilty pleasure) are the same reason Hanson is one of the most underrated bands performing today.

Despite being grown family men in their late 20s and 30s and having released six incredibly diverse albums since that dreaded “MMMbop” phase, Hanson still isn’t in the public eye.

These guys (Taylor, Zac and Isaac) are still some of the most talented vocalists and musicians to grace a stage, but since their Grammy winning debut album, Middle of Nowhere, which spawned monster hit “MMMbop,” it’s as though the group has been forced under the radar.

Despite having sold 16 million records worldwide, the group left Island Def Jam Records in 2001 to release their music independently. They created their own label, 3CG Records, and subsequently released four albums over the years, all of which have found massive success amongst their fan base, many of whom have stuck with them from the beginning.

Seeing them live? It’s honestly like going to a church; you’re surrounded by a packed room full of people that seem to be going through what can only be described as a religious experience. There’s crying, screaming, dancing, laying on of hands – everything you’d expect a cult following to incite. But in this church, the spirit is found in three musicians who much of the female audience had planned to, somehow, marry back in 1997.

The group is touring to support its newest album, Anthem, which continues the much-matured Hanson sound blending big band music with the trio’s trademark harmonizing and soulful sound. On stage, the brothers have always been rock stars without trying and even as their live shows progress into mixture of live rock, soul and Motown, it’s their raw talent which brings fans to their knees – and has them camping out for days in anticipation.

Of course, you can’t have a 21-year career and not explore your entire catalog. Hanson played the majority of Anthem but paced it with old fan favorites. When the band played “Where’s the Love,” the room exploded. For an acoustic “Penny and Me,” the noise generated by the crowd threatened to overwhelm the song’s sweetness. No matter how obscure or old the song, the crowd sang every single word. It’s clear Hanson fans have the entire discography memorized.

In the midst of their set, the guys went even more old school, showcasing their ability to harmonize by stripping the set down to just the three of them and a microphone a capella, blending their voices together seamlessly.

Charlotte fans got a special treat for the band’s encore with the approaching Christmas season: a never-played-in-Charlotte live rendition of the 1997 Hanson Christmas album, Snowed In.

With more than 100 songs in its arsenal to choose from, Hanson typically picks fan favorites for the encores. The band rarely manages to surprise fans who have come to 10, 15 or 20 live shows – but the Christmas album? Never have the screams been louder. Especially when opener David Ryan Harris, a singer-songwriter remniscent of John Mayer, came out to play a classic like “Merry Christmas, Baby.”

Well done, boys. Even after all these years, despite not getting the credit you deserve from the music industryfor your incredible, raw talent, you still manage to whip a crowd of hundreds into a frenzy with one note.

13 'Would You Rathers' To Consider Before Your Next Vacation

Huff Post Travel

Ok, so you’re probably not going to find maggots in your sandwich or be forced to live in a terminal a la Tom Hanks.

But there is a wee chance that these sticky scenarios could potentially present themselves at any moment during your next vacation, so you should be prepared to make a decision if/when they do.

Ready? Let’s play a little

WOULD YOU RATHER… realize the only track on your iPod — aka the only one you’ve got for your entire trip — is an audio version of the flight safety video OR Hanson’s “MMMBop?”

PopSyd: New boys, old beats

The Towerlight

I’m almost always on the lookout for new music. I’m also pretty keen on boy bands. The two don’t seem related, but recently, these two things lead to a dive into the depths of YouTube on a search for covers of popular boy band songs. Some covers were great, some were terrible and some I even listened to on repeat, but I found a few that are worth mentioning.

The Gardiner Sisters, well known YouTube musicians, posted a cover of ‘N Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye.” Because ‘N Sync is my favorite boy band, I was skeptical that any musician could do the song justice.

I found that many electronic covers of ‘N Sync’s songs sounded like they were trying too hard, but the Gardiner Sisters made it their own by doing an acoustic cover of the song and blending their unusual vocals. I have a confession to make: I have no idea what the lyrics to “MMMBop” are. I’ve seen Hanson in concert and I still have no idea what they’re saying. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed a cover of the song done by UK indie-pop band The Vamps.

The Vamps didn’t make many changes when they took on the song, but simple was better in this case. I don’t think doing a serious, acoustic cover of such a fun song would have gone together well.

Carly Rose Sonenclar, runner up on season two of The X Factor, stripped down One Direction’s “Stole My Heart” to a piano rendition of the song. She turned the fun, club song to a sweet and sentimental tune, and her vocals were even reminiscent of Norah Jones.

The Jonas Brothers have a knack for producing great covers from artists like Bruno Mars, fun., and even Frank Ocean (or, they used to before they broke up). But good covers of Jonas Brothers’ songs were much more difficult to find.

Alex Goot, “gootmusic” on YouTube, did a decent job covering the band’s 2008 hit “Burnin’ Up,” though. He served as a one-man band on the song, playing the drums, keyboard, tambourine, guitar and more. It’s not as good as the original, of course, but Goot is definitely a talented musician. Citizen’s cover of “Barbara Ann” by The Beach Boys is the cream of the crop when it comes to boy band covers.

Their version of the song starts out harmonious and innocent, but then quickly jumps to the rough vocals Citizen is known for. The vocal contrast between the two bands was somewhat comical, but in the best way. Their cover is just over a minute long, but in that time they managed to make the song something completely new while still doing justice to The Beach Boys.

If you’re looking for new songs to get you through the rest of the semester, I highly recommend adding these covers, and the originals, to your playlist.

After a break, brothers renew their commitment

Go Upstate

Hanson

Hanson’s latest CD, “Anthem,” has been released and Hanson is starting the first leg of a North American tour that visits theaters and large clubs. What’s more, “Anthem” is a cheery album, full of the kind of pop-rock — ahem, anthems — that should have audiences singing and clapping along to the songs.

The tone of “Anthem” is striking considering what happened about a year ago.

“I think this record was an interesting one because we really reached a point in 2012 where this record almost didn’t get made,” Zac Hanson said in a mid-August phone interview. “It was the first time, really ever, we had come up against a challenge that was maybe bigger than this band, in the sense of it was hard to overcome, just personal, not taking care of what’s most important. And you do something long enough, you begin to take those relationships with each other, the things that come so easily for so long, for granted.”

Noting that he and his brothers, Isaac and Taylor, aren’t the type to air their dirty laundry in public, Hanson didn’t delve into ugly details, but it’s clear that the normal sibling harmony had gone off key.

“I think the best way to say it is just we became overworked,” Hanson said, noting the time invested into various Hanson business concerns had taken a toll. “We run the (record) label. We manage ourselves. We produce the records. All the projects we do in addition to music, and things like Take the Walk (a charitable effort by the band), all the merchandise, and we’re starting a beer company, all of those things (were happening). And then if you do all of those things and then you get to go do the music, but the music is sort of burdened by all of those things, your relationship is burdened by all of the stresses of everything around you.

“You haven’t taken the time to sort of clean the closet, do the spring cleaning. Then it was just sort of emotionally explosive,” he said. “There wasn’t a lot of care given to each other. It wasn’t one moment or one thing or one disagreement. It was really an overall sense that the music wasn’t getting the emotional energy. We weren’t taking the time for the music because it had somehow, one way or another, become that extra thing. ‘Oh no, we’ve got to go do the music.’ So it was sort of a hard reset.”

The brothers, who were between the ages of 11 and 16 when they broke onto the national scene in 1997, decided to take last summer off, and after the break, the three brothers returned with renewed purpose, and Hanson thinks that feeling translates into the “Anthem” album.

“There was really a sense when we came back together that we were fighting for this band, that as a unit, we were all ready to sort of start again,” he said. “You hear it in the music. So many of the songs, I think, are about, songs like ‘Already Home,’ which is about saying look around you. You’re already there. You’ve already got what matters. Or, ‘You Can’t Stop Us,’ which is fighting for what you believe in and not letting anything get in your way.”

That spirit extended to the music on “Anthem,” which predominantly is populated by songs such as “Fired Up,” “You Can’t Stop Us” and “Cut Right Through Me” with big guitars, big pop hooks and big choruses.

That tone is a notably different from the more piano-driven pop-soul sound of Hanson’s previous album, “Shout It Out.” But Hanson noted that ever since the group’s chart-busting major label debut, 1997’s “Middle of Nowhere” (featuring the smash single, “MMMBop”), the group has tended to change up its sound on each of the five subsequent studio albums.

“ ‘Shout It Out,’ was very piano-driven, and so I think what happened (on “Anthem”) was there was just this comeback of the guitar,” Hanson said. “The guitar rose again, and with that, there were a lot of riffs and driving melodies.”

Hanson 'MMMBop'ped through Summerside

By | November 21, 2013

Journal Pioneer

SUMMERSIDE – Harbourfront Theatre was almost full, but it was such an enthusiastic crowd, it sounded like triple the capacity.

A mainly female audience came to see pop-rock trio Hanson in concert in Summerside on Saturday.

On their “Anthem” world tour, brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson stopped on P.E.I. for a barefoot fundraising walk on a beautiful afternoon in Summerside and a pop-rockin’ concert Saturday evening

“Anthem” is their new album that “celebrates the power of music to ignite passion and bring people together,” and that’s exactly what they did in Summerside.

However, it was their 1997 international smash single “MMMBop” from their debut album “Middle of Nowhere,” that got the audience most excited.

Before starting their encore number, the brothers told the boisterous crowd that they would return to P.E.I. if this crowd promised to come back. Their request was met with resounding cheers.

Some FAQs we keep getting –

Why is <insert show here> missing from the list?

Currently we only have what are considered “official tour shows” listed.

How do you decide what is an official tour show?

These are shows you’d see listed in the Hanson.net Tour Archive or shows where HNet will do official M&Gs.  We have added a few shows beyond that as well, but we are starting small.

Will the other shows be added?

That is the goal.  First we’d like things to be set up so that you will be able to save your list and return to it and update it as new tours happen.  Once we can figure out how to get that set up, we’ll start adding other dates in to the database.

Is there anyway I can help?

Sure! Either by keeping track of a setlist at an upcoming show this tour or filling in the blanks on an older show that the setlist may be missing.  Part of the reason we are hesitating to add in all the promo / radio dates is because a lot of those setlists are missing.

Are there plans to keep track of what songs were solo or acoustic?

At this time, no, there are no plans to add that.  We will be keeping the setlists on the tour page and blog, some of which list that information.

Do you have setlists for unofficial shows on the site?

Yes, the tour page can be found at http://www.hansonstage.com/tour.htm just click on the year on the ticket and all the setlists we have are listed.  If you know of setlists that are missing, or even just a few songs let us know and we can start piecing things together!

We have no set schedule on when these pages will be updated throughout the tour so stay tuned to the blog as we will post whenever updates are made so you can update your lists :)
