NEW AGAIN: HANSON

Interview Magazine

This week the young brothers best known for singing “MMMBop” announced that to mark their 25th anniversary as the pop group Hanson, they’ll celebrate with a hometown performance in May at Oklahoma’s fourth annual Hop Jam Festival (an occasion for craft beers and music) followed by a world tour. The trio co-founded the festival, which is an unsurprising fact given that the band owns Hanson Brothers Beer Company (and sells a pale ale called Mmmhops). To honor the late-’90s teen heartthrobs, today we revisit their feature from the pages of Interview‘s July 1997 issue, years before they reached the legal drinking age.

“How did this happen so fast? Can you tell us that?” asks Zac Hanson, youngest member of Hanson, the new teen sensation band made up of three brothers, aged eleven, fourteen, and sixteen, from Tulsa, Okla. Hanson’s first disc for Mercury Records, a giddy collection of highly crafted pop called Middle of Nowhere, shipped gold to record stores on the strength of the single “MMMBop,” which then shot to number one. Everywhere the Hansons go, crowds clamor for them; at a taping of David Letterman the day their album was released, a long line of young girls—and a few grown men—were whimpering for their autographs.

The reasons for the fuss are not mysterious. When Zac, Isaac (the oldest), and Taylor (in the middle) weave their signature sunny harmonies over an R&B-lite groove, it’s as if they’ve triple-handedly updated the Osmonds, the Partridge Family, and the Jackson Five all at once. Their sound is as safe and clean as it gets, yet their songs deal with contemporary, even adult, themes. And with their long blond hair, all three boys are downright pretty, putting a spin on rock’s age-old androgyny. While the teen-idol lifestyle may exacerbate normal sibling rivalry, all three Hansons insist that squabbling has yet to rear its ugly head. “They’re like my best friends,” grins Zac. “Only bester.”

First Tulsa, then the world: Taylor Hanson talks about Hanson’s 25th anniversary tour

Does it feel like 25 years?

Taylor Hanson laughed a little and said, “Time is a mystery. Some things feel like yesterday and some things feel like a lifetime ago.”

The reason he fielded the question is because he and his brothers — you know them as the pop-rock act Hanson — announced dates Monday for a 25th anniversary world tour.

Continuing, he said this: “But I will say we have had some incredible experiences over the last 25 years and, truly, we feel like we are just getting started. That’s probably the most exciting thing is to feel like there is so much in the future. Part of continuing for years is that constant desire to look ahead. And with this tour we are really, for the first time, properly looking back just enough to kind of celebrate that history with a lot of fans that have been with us and really acknowledge that. Ultimately, it all still leads to where we are going next.”

Next?

As previously reported by the Tulsa World, Hanson will headline the Hop Jam beer and music festival May 21 in Tulsa’s Brady Arts District. The Hop Jam performance will kick off the world tour, which officially begins with a swing through Europe in June.

“Making music together for 25 years is a milestone that we had to acknowledge, and what better way to do it than with an anniversary tour,” Taylor Hanson said in a press release.

Added guitarist Isaac Hanson, “This year is not only about the two decades of music, it’s about celebrating the incredible community of fans who have been with us, singing along year after year.”

Believe it or not, it has been 25 years since Hanson was formed. It may seem like “only” 20 years because that’s when a debut album (“Middle of Nowhere”) and smash single (“Mmmbop”) introduced the soulful Tulsans to the world. But the trio of brothers spent five years before “Middle of Nowhere” building a sound that would earn them Grammy nominations and 16 million in album sales.

Among topics broached with Taylor Hanson during a Monday telephone interview:

Launching the 25th anniversary tour in Tulsa

He said he and his brothers are thrilled to celebrate 25 years of making music. And it seemed natural to kick off the tour at Hop Jam.

“For the last four years, we have really invested ourselves heavily in what we are doing here in Tulsa and the craft beer movement that we are a part of with our Hanson Brothers Beer Company,” he said. “And it just made sense that it was a great moment to kind of come back to the stage after not playing the festival last year and bring it all together.”

He also indicated it’s an opportunity to draw attention to Hop Jam. The festival’s role in the tour was mentioned in a press release posted Monday on hanson.net, which means Hanson fans around the world now know about the existence of Hop Jam.

“It’s an opportunity for us to further highlight this special thing that we have been trying to build here in our neighborhood,” he said.

The scope of the tour

Hanson’s upcoming tour is the Middle of Everywhere 25th Anniversary World Tour. Truth in advertising? The tour will take Hanson just about everywhere. Dates for Europe and North America were announced Monday morning. Tour stops in Australia and South America will be announced at a later date. Taylor Hanson called it the most comprehensive tour for the band in at least a decade.

“We have really taken a lot of time over this last year to road map out how do we logistically get to as many places as possible and be able to say, hey, this really is a world tour,” he said.

The tour will feature performances of the group’s most widely known material and fan favorites from their body of work. In select markets, Taylor Hanson will DJ a “Dance Like You Don’t Care” after party, which, according to a press release, will feature an eclectic mix of modern and ’90s favorites.

The name of the tour

The Middle of Everywhere tour name pays tribute to Hanson’s roots. “Middle of Nowhere” led to Middle of Everywhere.

“It’s a tip of the hat to where we have been,” he said. “Just the look and feel of this tour, we are very much acknowledging the connection that we made with fans 20 years ago with that first break-out record and we’re giving people a chance — we’re making it OK to remember what their Hanson memories are, whether they have discovered the band two albums ago or six albums ago. We are kind of giving everybody permission to remember or enjoy or celebrate with us that we have had a chance to keep our jobs as musicians for this many years.”

Hanson brothers to headline upcoming 4th annual ‘Hop Jam’ festival

By | March 14, 2017

KTUL

TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — To celebrate their 25th anniversary as a band, Tulsa’s own Hanson announced Monday they’re headlining the upcoming Hop Jam Beer and Music Festival.

The 4th annual event founded by the brothers is expected to create a big boost for businesses across the Brady Arts District.

It’s a special time for the group. The three brothers say it’s surreal being able to perform and kick off their world tour in downtown Tulsa; the same place where they got their start.

It’s official! The Hop Jam 2017 is coming. Join us on May 21st!

“We’ve come far,; local boys through and through,” said Taylor Hanson.

It’s fair to say Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson are synonymous with Tulsa.

The group launched the famous band 25 years ago.

“Twenty-five years later and we’re only a block down the street,” said Taylor Hanson.

Their studio is a part of the iconic Brady Arts District downtown, the stage for their upcoming Hop Jam Beer and Music Festival, the largest craft beer and music festival in the state.

“You come down for the free concert, and you stay for the beer,” said Zac Hanson.

The fourth annual event is showcasing more than 65 breweries with some 200 craft beers, featuring many local bands with Hanson headlining this year.

And like every year you can expect a raffle drawing for a special guitar from the three brothers.

“It really was born with the idea of stimulating the community,” said Taylor Hanson.

While the concerts are free, the food and beer will cost you money.

But it all benefits local businesses.

“You know it’s always an exciting weekend for us, it’s a lot of fun because when you’re not at work you can grab some beers and listen to some great music too,” said the Rusty Crane owner Lee Brennan.

The festival is taking place not to far from Lee Brennan’s restaurant the Rusty Crane.

Each year he sees more and more business when Hop Jam is in full swing.

“It’s a cool thing to be a part of,” said Brennan.

Especially for the trio in charge with a front row seat to all the fun.

“It’s like a huge group hug with a beer in your hand, which can kind of be treacherous,” said Taylor Hanson.

Those tickets are now on sale with everything kicking off May 21.

The group’s beer will also be on sale at the event.
