Who to contact about Ticketmaster monopoly.

By | February 11, 2009

Ticketmaster sucks, there’s no denying that. But what can we do to stop them from being a monopoly? We can boycott concerts – but then we’d miss some of our favorite artists! A member of The Rock Boat community compiled a list of 6 people who we should contact if we want something done about ticketmaster, their monopoly on ticket sales, and ridiculous extra fees.

Ticketmaster has been in the news lately as it was redirecting people looking to buy (sold out) Bruce Springsteen tickets to their broker (aka scalper) affiliate – ticketsnow.com. This sort of trickery has got to stop!

Let’s do this. We all need to write 6 letters. These letters need to have language opposing the potential monopoly which may be the resultant fact once a ticketing system is in place. The people listed below are the Senators/Representatives who will have the ability to request the FTC look into potential unfair trade practices.

Here are the folks to whom you need to write:

1 – Senator John D. Rockefeller, IV
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and
Transportation
531 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

2 – Senator Herb Kohl
Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition and
Consumer Rights
330 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

3 – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
522 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

4 – Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi
235 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

5 – Hon. Henry Waxman
Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce
2125 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

6 – Hon. John Conyers, Jr.
Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary
2426 Rayburn Building
Washington, DC 20515

Writing to your individual elected representatives, as the Springsteen camp suggests, is a good idea. However, the most bang for your buck resides in the above named individuals.

If you want to do even more than write these 6 individuals – the website ticketmastersucks.org also has some links on how to contact the FTC and other places to share your voice!
