Congratulations to Jennifer Rowsell who is hansonstage’s fan of the month for January!

Name: Jennifer Rowsell
Age: 25
Location: Halifax NS, Canada

1) What is the very first memory of Hanson that you have? Recording MMMBop off the radio in May 1997
2) How many times have you seen Hanson in concert? Favorite concert memory? 14 times. Being front row, getting Zac’s sticks, catching Ike’s guitar pick, doing a round to “With You In Your Dreams”, hearing “Gimme Some Lovin”
3) What is your favorite Hanson song, and why? I’ve Been Down – it’s like the updated MMMBop in terms of what the lyrics mean. It sounds so fun yet the message is kinda sad.
4) Why do you like/love Hanson? They’ve been a part of me for 13 years, they’re like a limb.
5) How long have you been a Hanson fan? Since July 1997
6) Why should you be FAN OF THE MONTH? Because I have traveled many miles to see them and am committed to them!
7) State a piece of trivia in regards to you & Hanson In April 2006 I had a 45min phone interview with Taylor for my 2-hour Hanson radio special 🙂

Tuesday Topic Recap

By | November 2, 2010

Our first Tuesday Topic was what venue would you like to see Hanson perform in? and we got NO responses! This led to us changing the format for the Tuesday Topic to a poll instead of forcing you to make a comment.

Our second Tuesday Topic was when we were still HansonTickets and the question was “How many copies of Shout It Out have you purchased?” This question came shortly after an article was released saying that the album was not selling well.

We had 38 fans respond. The majority of the voters said that they had only purchased 1 copy of SIO. (I am in this group) 39% of the voters said that they had purchased 2-4 copies of the album and we had 2 voters who had purchased NO copy and 1 who had purchased 5 or more copies.

I guess that 1 person who purchased 5 or more covers the “slack” for the 3 who had purchased none – and I really hope that those 3 did not illegally download it!

During the tour we will only be posting the “recaps” to these Tuesday Topics, but we will consider continuing the topics in the band’s off time once the 3rd leg of the tour ends.

Hanson to 'Shout it Out' at House of Blues

We talk to Taylor Hanson about the group’s evolution since ‘MMMBop’

Folks who haven’t paid attention to Oklahoma trio Hanson since the ’90s have missed out on a little bit of music-biz drama and quite a few solid pop-rock tunes.

Two major-label albums followed the hugely successful 1997 single “MMMBop,” which made Tulsa brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson child stars. But as the songwriting siblings went from boys to men, they began to find themselves at odds with their label’s expectations.

“I don’t think they knew what exactly they wanted us to sound like or be, but they wanted us to be a guarantee,” Taylor, the 27-year-old middle brother and primary singer, told us in a recent phone chat. “We reached a point where we just had to grab it by the horns and embrace all the qualities that defined us as a band. Despite the fact that we don’t sleep a lot now, I feel proud of the last seven or eight years.”

What the Hansons have done with those years is impressive: They negotiated their way out of their contract with Island Def Jam, started an indie label called 3CG and went on to self-release three well-received albums. The latest is this year’s soulful, R&B-tinged disc Shout It Out.

You may have seen the brothers and several hometown friends doing silly Blues Brothers-style choreography in the recent video for the infectious single “Thinkin’ Bout Something.”

“The song and the video – there’s no question we were making a statement with it,” Taylor said. “We like to take risks. We’ve never been accused of being offensive or anything. [Laughs.] But we’re always into doing something that nobody else is doing.”

Taylor and his bros will be playing many of the tunes from Shout It Out when their tour comes to House of Blues on Monday.

“This record was recorded live off the floor – the last three records we’ve made have been going in that direction,” Taylor said. “So this show is the most true to the recording itself that we’ve done, probably.

“That said, we change up the show a lot. We’ve always pulled from older records and never shied away from playing classics.”

For anyone who still has trouble considering the Hanson brothers grownups, it might help to know that they’re all husbands and fathers now. Taylor has four young children.

“I’d like to say that I am a super parent, but my wife is an extraordinary person who allows me to be gone and be committed to our business,” he said. “We try to have our cake and eat it too. It’s a little crazy, though.”

Hanson's "Shout It Out" Tour Diary: Part VI

Paper Mag

We’ve covered a lot of ground on the last stretch of the SIO Tour and had some great shows. During this run I think we officially began to feel the change of season, with the first sign of the changing leaves and a touch of crisp fall air coming down the pike. The artist in me especially loves the change of season, but it is a bittersweet ending to a great summer that has taken us all over the country. One thing that has kept the tour interesting has been throwing in some livestreams for fanclub members only and some for everybody. We especially had a good time with our new friends, A Rocket To The Moon, who are out on the road with us. They joined us on stage for the final encore in Spokane to kick out a ruckus cover of “Long Way To The Top.” Peppered into this week’s snapshots are a few from the onstage ensemble, as well as various out-the-window landscapes, backstage moments, and a few long-exposure shots from a stop into the studio with our friend John Goodmanson in Seattle. John is working on mixing our epic five-disc DVD set for release this fall. There’s a bit of everything in this, I might still be guilty of takig more shots of scenery than humans, but I guess sometimes the scenery is the best part of the journey.

Interview With Marc Bacino: ‘Queens English’ For Domesticated Souls

By | October 28, 2010

The Aquarian

Two of the absolute best pure pop records from 2010 have been by ex-teeny bop princes Hanson, and little known Queens native Mark Bacino. The former, a hit at Bamboozle, continues to churn out spectacular under-appreciated albums such as Shout It Out while the latter has casually scattered a mere three recordings over a dozen years. Inexorably, both Hanson and Bacino identify with many post-Beatles ‘70s-related pop elements such as bright melodic hooks, urgent harmonic pleas, capricious piano strolls and raspy brass bursts.

Though it’s hard to choose Bacino’s latest endeavor over the “Mm-Bop”-propelled brotherly trio, the St. John’s University grad’s melancholy love letter to New York City, Queens English, surely ranks high. An uncompromisingly straight-ahead conventionality, better suited for ‘70s singer-songwriter types than today’s emotional hardcore brats, affirmatively affects his rhapsodic Big Apple paeans and evocatively reflective limericks.

The band Hanson started out as teenage heartthrobs thanks to number one single, “Mm-Bop.” But their latest work is perfectly maturated horn-infested pop that’s straight down the middle. Your music also has a worthy centrist mode. Do you feel cheated by today’s compromised commercial radio play-lists that narrow everything down to the lowest common denominator?

With every record I’ve done, I’ve heard that. ‘If you did this in 1973 you’d be on the radio and TV.’ I cannot even get Fordham University’s WFUV to play my records. They’ve totally shut me out. My music’s not 100% rootsy, but I feel it’d fit.
