Expect Hanson fans to sing and clap along when the trio takes its ‘Anthem” tour to Starland Ballroom next week.

HANSON

WHAT: The Anthem World Tour with David Ryan Harris WHEN: 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19 TICKETS: $26 in advance; $31 day of show WHERE: Starland Ballroom, 570 Jernee Mill Road, Sayreville INFO:  starlandballroom.com

Everything may seem just fine in the world of Hanson these days – and things are going reasonably well for the trio of brothers these days.

The group’s latest CD, “Anthem,” has been released and Hanson is on the first leg of a North American tour that visits theaters and large clubs. What’s more, “Anthem” is a particularly cheery album, full of the kind of pop-rock– ahem, anthems – that should have audiences singing and clapping along to the songs.

The tone of “Anthem” is especially striking considering what happened about a year ago.

“I think this record was an interesting one because we really reached a point in 2012 where this record almost didn’t get made,” Zac Hanson said in a mid-August phone interview. “It was the first time, really ever, we had come up against a challenge that was maybe bigger than this band, in the sense of it was hard to overcome, just personal, not taking care of what’s most important. And you do something long enough, you begin to take those relationships with each other, the things that come so easily for so long, for granted.”

Noting that he and his brothers, Isaac and Taylor, aren’t the type to air their dirty laundry in public, Hanson didn’t delve into ugly details, but it’s clear that the normal sibling harmony had gone off key.

“I think the best way to say it is just we became overworked,” Hanson said, noting the time invested into various Hanson business concerns had taken a toll. “We run the (record) label. We manage ourselves. We produce the records. All the projects we do in addition to music, and things like Take the Walk (a charitable effort by the band), all the merchandise, and we’re starting a beer company, all of those things (were happening). And then if you do all of those things and then you get to go do the music, but the music is sort of burdened by all of those things, your relationship is burdened by all of the stresses of everything around you.

“You haven’t taken the time to sort of clean the closet, do the spring cleaning. Then it was just sort of emotionally explosive,” he said. “There wasn’t a lot of care given to each other.

It wasn’t one moment or one thing or one disagreement. It was really an overall sense that the music wasn’t getting the emotional energy.

We weren’t taking the time for the music because it had somehow, one way or another, become that extra thing. ‘Oh no, we’ve got to go do the music.’ So it was sort of a hard re-set.”

The brothers, who were between the ages of 11 and 16 when they broke onto the national scene in 1997, decided to take last summer off, and after the break, the three brothers returned with renewed purpose, and Hanson thinks that feeling translates into the “Anthem” album.

“There was really a sense when we came back together that we were fighting for this band, that as a unit, we were all ready to sort of start again,” he said. “You hear it in the music. So many of the songs, I think, are about, songs like ‘Already Home,’ which is about saying look around you. You’re already there. You’ve already got what matters. Or, ‘You Can’t Stop Us,’ which is fighting for what you believe in and not letting anything get in your way.”

That spirit extended to the music on “Anthem,” which predominantly is populated by songs like “Fired Up,” “You Can’t Stop Us” and “Cut Right Through Me” with big guitars, big pop hooks and big choruses.

That tone is a notably different from the more piano-driven pop-soul sound of Hanson’s previous album, “Shout It Out.” But Hanson noted that ever since the group’s chart-busting major label debut, 1997’s “Middle Of Nowhere” (featuring the smash single, “MMMBop”), the group has tended to change up its sound on each of the five subsequent studio albums.

“‘Shout It Out,’ was very piano-driven, and so I think what happened (on “Anthem”) was there was just this comeback of the guitar,” Hanson said. “The guitar rose again, and with that, there were a lot of riffs and driving melodies.”

The concert-friendly sound of “Anthem” has Hanson excited about the group’s current tour of the U.S. and Canada, which runs through Nov. 20 and makes a stop Tuesday, Nov. 19 at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville. Hanson noted that while new material will be featured, the group will play songs going back to “MMMBop” in its show.

“So much of this record was written really thinking about the live experience,” he said. “This album, even more than others, we wrote these parts where you really heard ‘Oh man, it’s going to be awesome when the audience sings ‘You Can’t Stop Us’ or claps along right there. And so, I’m particularly excited to hear this music with the audience.”

Hanson leads barefoot Baywalk tour

Taylor Hanson chats with one of 75 participants who joined him and his brothers for a 1.6km barefoot stroll along the Summerside Baywalk, in support of the band’s charitable projects.

SUMMERSIDE – It’s unusual to see someone walking barefoot along the Baywalk in November, but the band Hanson was able to encourage about half of a group of 75 fans to do just that Saturday afternoon.

The Grammy-nominated group, consisting of brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson, who have been performing and recording for 21 years, was in the city for a performance on their Anthem World Tour. As with their other performances since 2007, they invited local fans and others to join them in a barefoot  ‘Take The Walk’ stroll for charity.

Hanson donates one dollar for each person registered for the walk. Each walker identified one of five charities the band supports, all tied to poverty, to apply their contribution.

Taylor Hanson, who proved to be the main spokesman for the event, explained that walking barefoot helps differentiate what they are trying to accomplish.

“It’s about connecting people in a tangible way to poverty, and specifically HIV / AIDS, because if you can deal with poverty you can deal with the issues of HIV in the communities in Africa. The cycle of poverty contributes massively to that disease being spread,” he detailed.

Hanson likes the idea that the charity events are humble and unpolished.

“The whole idea is that you have to do things daily. What makes a difference is what you do when no one is looking,” he said, but he had no problem with being noticed along the Baywalk.

“We’re encouraging others to hold events. The most valuable benefit is going to happen as people decide to organize in small groups, wherever they are. That compounds!”

Rather than the charity event serving to help the tour, elder brother Isaac notes that the tour provides a unique opportunity: when they are in each city, they can inspire others to take their day and turn it into something positive for someone else.

“The only positive in a purely band-related way, is that we get the opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation with our fans.”

That contact can go a long way.

Beverly Shiner came from Boston to attend the concert, and ‘Take The Walk’. She has been to thirty Hanson concerts and has walked in cities across the continent.

“If that is what the band is passionate about doing, I think their fans will follow and help support that cause,” she stated from experience.

That connection is important for youngest sibling Zac, now 28.

“You get to spend time with people who care about your music,” he admitted.

Even if fans don’t have a passion for international aid, he said, they can be inspired to do something for their local area, participation giving confidence to make it happen.

15-year-old Jesse Arsenault, from Miscouche, was prompted to attend by his sister and mother.

“I thought the charity thing was interesting, and decided to come out and do it,” he said.

He trod the first half in shoes, but did the return barefoot, inspired by Taylor Hanson’s overview of the project at the half-way point.

Senior Linda Little, of Summerside, ignored her rheumatoid arthritis and knee replacement aches to join the walk as well. Not a longtime fan, she was aware of Hanson’s success and was looking forward to being an usher at the concert, but it was the chance to make a contribution that was her successful goal.

The Vamps Cover Hanson's

Check out this amazing new cover of “MMMBop” by the  hot new band The  Vamps, given exclusively to JustJaredJr.com!

The guys – Bradley Simpson, James McVeyConnor Ball, Tristan Evans – filmed the video during  their adventures in Los Angeles last month.

“’MMMBop’ is one of the biggest songs from a teen act in the past 20 years,”  the guys told JJJ. “The song had such a worldwide impact, and  we love the song – so we HAD to cover it!”

As for their plans for next year, The Vamps told us,  “Thinking about 2014 is something we get very excited about. We were very lucky  this year to release our first single, and were totally blown away by the  public’s response. Consequently, our main goal for 2014 is to meet as many fans  as we can, in as many places as we can! Furthermore, we are so excited to be  releasing our debut album around Easter. We have been working on this record for  the past two years, so it’s a big step for us to finally release something!”

They added, “We can’t wait to head out on the road next year and play with  some awesome people – we are touring with Taylor  Swift in February, and then The  Wanted the following month. Hopefully we’ll have the chance to meet  as many fans as possible!”

We can’t wait to see what they do next! Check out The Vamps‘  “MMMBop” cover below!

NEW
Message From The Band

The ANTHEM World Tour is still in full swing, but we are winding closer to the end of the North American Leg (hard to believe). We are having a great time in Canada, with a second show in Halifax tonight and outside of the tour itself we have TON of stuff going on at HANSON HQ.

Last week we started sharing a special clip of a song from the new ANTHEM Live In NY DVD which we are continuing to do each week as we head into the holidays. This week it’s a clip of Already Home. Check it out here.

We also have the new documentary Re-Made In America which is our most in depth portrait of an album’s musical creation and it shares a lot about the story behind this record. The Elves at the 3CG workshop wanted us to also remind you about some really great new merch, plus our Christmas gift wrapping which we love this year.

There’s a lot going on, as we speak, but there’s also some anticipation and planning for the kickoff of next year starting with our return to Jamaica for our secondBack To The Island destination concert! As some of you know from our earlier announcement, friends Paul McDonald and Matt Wertz are going to join us for the event which is going to be a blast. Each of us is also doing a solo concert for the FIRST TIME. There’s a lot more fun activities, but I think I might be extra excited just because I am picturing myself on a beach right now. We hope you will be there, and if you are not already planning to come, grab one of the last couple roomsHERE.

Thanks for continuing to be a part of this amazing music community. We will see on you the road and online!

Isaac, Taylor and Zac
