MESSAGE FROM THE BAND

This week has been spent at a studio out in LA mixing.  It may be February, but it’s still Christmas for us as we spend each day trying to get the balance between vocals and instruments just right. It is a very painstaking process, but a great mix can can be the difference between a mess and a masterpiece.

We spent the better part of our lunch break talking about Back To The Island 2018.  We were excited by how much positive feedback we got about this year’s event, but we feel confident we can make 2018 event better.  We want to build on what fans loved like the concerts and games and make the whole experience more luxurious. We hope to share all the details before the end of February.

We may be spending our days listening to Christmas music and thinking about playing Christmas concerts, but don’t be fooled, a full HANSON world tour is very much in the forefront of our planning.  We have the first few legs of the tour set, but our desire to reach as many places as possible means there is still a little work to be done.  We are still a few weeks away from announcing tour details, but as you all know, time has a way of flying by. More soon.

So you want to go to MOE?

By | January 31, 2017

MOE

This post was originally on my personal blog, ConcertKatie, but with so many questions coming up for MOE 2017 I figured I’d rework the post a bit and post it here.

Hanson “Day” 2017 will take place beginning the evening of May 18 until May 20, 2017 in Tulsa,OK.  While The Hop Jam has not been officially announced yet, the guys have mentioned it in newsletters and the assumption is that will be held on Sunday, May 21, 2017.

In order to go – you must be a paid Hanson.net member.  If you’re not yet, join.  The 2017 EP should be released at Hanson Day weekend and can be picked up there by members who have paid their membership fees through 2018.  If you paid for your membership in 2016, while you may be a valid member through May 2017 to attend MOE, you won’t be able to pick up your new kit unless you renew early.  (A cut off date is usually announced, but I’d suggest to do it by April)  Your membership will be good for another year from the date you originally joined and you’ll get to pick up the kit and take it home with you at MOE.

(For example – if you joined December 18, 2016 as a 2016 member, your membership will be good until December 18, 2017.  If you renew for 2017 on April 1, your membership will be extended until December 18, 2018 making you eligible to pick up your kit at MOE.  Your expiration date can be found on your account profile page on Hanson.net)

Where to Stay

Most of the events happen in the Brady Arts District in Downtown Tulsa.  Concerts have been held at Cain’s Ballroom and the Brady Theater. The location for 2017 has not yet been announced.  The closest hotel is the Fairfield Inn.  This hotel is pretty small so it books up fast.  There is also the Hyatt about a half a mile to a mile walk away which is much bigger (and sometimes has cheaper rates available on Priceline). These are the only hotels I have personally stayed at but there are several others within a mile or two of the area – some I have heard of other fans staying at include Aloft, Double Tree and Best Western.  Some hotels provide airport shuttles.  Those that do not will run you about $20-$30 on a cab or a bit cheaper if you use uber.

Do I Need a Car?

This depends on what you want to do.  If you are coming in early or staying later and want to explore more of Tulsa, I’d say yes.  If you are only coming for Thurs/Fri-Sun, you will probably kept busy with so many Hanson activities that you won’t really need one if you are staying within walking distance.  (Note: If they have a movie night, the theater is a distance from the other activities and you will need a car or cab or uber)

When Should I Come?

This year it sounds like activities with Hanson will be starting Thursday evening.  (Last year it was karaoke Thursday night)  Typically Thursday afternoon they begin the check in process and open the Hanson store.  In the past, items have sold out after Thursday and were not restocked.  Some years they do end up restocking and putting most items up on the Hanson.net store.  If you want to see more of Tulsa you should probably come early or stay later as they to tend to keep the weekend jam-packed with activities.

What activities are free?

All activities require a Hanson.net Membership ($40+shipping).  Free with your RSVP is access to the Hanson Store, Hanson Gallery, Photos with the band, State of the Band and the Members Only Concert.

The Hop Jam concert on Sunday is also free and open to the public (you do not need to be a Hanson.net member to attend) and this past year they did offer VIP Upgrades for a fee which gave you access to the beer garden early, taste tickets as well as merchandise.

What are the add on activities and how much are they?

We won’t know for sure the prices for 2017 and which activities they will be holding until they are announced at the end of February.  Here is a guide based on past events and prices:

Movie Night – $12 (They did not do this in 2016)
Fan Club Dinner – $22 (Friday night and Saturday night, fixed menu, usually at Caz’s or Mexicali’s)
Street Team Leaders Dinner – $22 (for Street Team Leaders only)
Dance party – $15 / $20 at door
Karaoke – $15 / $20 at door
Dance party / Karaoke bundle – $25
Lectures – $25 / $30 at door
Bowling – $50 (includes a t-shirt)

There is a cut off on when you can buy tickets until online.  If any tickets are left, they will be available first come, first serve at the check in table (usually CASH ONLY).  Last year the Dance Party did sell out at check-in.

What are the VIP tickets for Hop Jam?

Where Should I Fly To?

Tulsa has an International Airport (TUL) that is serviced by many airlines. Oklahoma City is a couple of hours away and also has an airport.  I am not sure the best way to get from OKC to TUL without renting a car – if anyone has any tips or experience in this area let me know and I will add it!

How is the Weather?

Unpredictable.  Pack for all seasons.  Some years have been rainy, windy and cold, others have been so hot that you wish you packed a pair of shorts (or are happy that you did) and some have been all of the above all wrapped into one – and maybe a tornado warning for good measure.  I think a combination of jeans, capris and shorts as well as a hoodie and rain jacket should cover most of your bases.

Where can I eat?

There are a lot of restaurants in the downtown area, some of them include:
Dilly Diner
Caz’s Chowhouse
Mexicali Border Cafe
Sisserou Carribean
Coney Island Hot Dogs
The Tavern
Spaghetti Warehouse
PRYHME Steakhouse
El Guapos
McNellie’s
Chimera Cafe
Oklahoma Joe’s
Hurts Donut
The Rusty Crane
Rib Crib
Fassler Hall
STG Pizzeria
Fat Guy’s Burgers

RSVP is up now on Hanson.net – Just go to the calendar page once you are logged in and click the button to RSVP! You will be sent an email confirmation there will be no confirmation list posted on the site like there has been in years past.  If you later realize you can no longer attend, just go to the calendar page and unclick the button to un-RSVP.

WEEKLY PIC

Here is the band on stage for the final bow during the recent “Back To The Island” destination concert event. We hope everyone who joined the event had as much fun as we did this year.

MESSAGE FROM THE BAND

Last week we were back in the studio and it was just perfect.  We started by recording a brand new song that will be released later in the year.  We produced and wrote it with our friend David Ryan Harris and it was a pleasure.  After the new song was finished, we transitioned back to recording the coming Christmas album and tracked stomps and claps and then a gospel choir. If you can imagine it was pretty much smiles ear to ear all around the room during the whole session.  We can’t wait for everyone to hear what we have created.

We have not set the start date just yet, but in the next few weeks we will begin recording the 2017 Hanson.net Members EP.  We have talked about quite a few ideas for the creative direction of this year’s EP, but whatever we land on, I am sure it will involve sleepless nights, long jam sessions, and will be nothing short of musical bliss.

We have a lot in the works between HANSON Day, Hop Jam, World Tour, Christmas Album, New Music, and all the rest. All the details for HANSON Day will be announced at the end of February and with any luck the other announcements will start coming soon after.

Isaac, Taylor and Zac

Fifth Harmony’s New Harmonies: Taylor Hanson & Pentatonix’s Arranger Explain What Happens When Five Become Four

By | January 24, 2017

Billboard

Sasha Samsonova
Fifth Harmony

At the 2017 People’s Choice Awards, Fifth Harmony performed in its new quartet formation for the first time since Camila Cabello exited the group in December.

Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jauregui made a strong case for the group as a foursome, strutting fiercely through “Work From Home” as giant screens flashed each of their names. But after the performance kicked off with the ladies covering Cabello’s part, it was tough not to wonder if the group actually sounded different — a bit thinner, maybe? — without Cabello in the mix.

Much has been made of the circumstances of Cabello’s departure, but from a purely musical standpoint, what happens when a five-member vocal group becomes four?

“From a vocal arranging perspective, it’s not a huge deal to go from five to four in a pop group that uses instrumental backing,” says Ben Bram, a Grammy-winning arranger and music director who has worked with Pentatonix and contributed to the Pitch Perfect franchise. “Just a slight shift in how you would arrange the vocals, but no major change in the sound.”

As Bram points out, Fifth Harmony is far from the only vocal group to carry on when one member leaves (see: Direction, One), and any difference in sound likely depends more on how attached a listener is to a particular voice, like Cabello’s.

“I think the biggest change in the overall sound comes from the loss of their strongest lead vocalist,” he says, “similar to One Direction losing Zayn.”

But if you detected something the slightest bit off about Fifth Harmony’s performance, there’s a perfectly reasonable music theory reason: take it from Taylor Hanson, who’s spent decades developing an intimate knowledge of multi-part harmony as one third of Hanson.

“The main difference with five versus four is that you are limited when it comes to adding extra harmony or extra counterpoint on those complementary fourth and fifth notes,” Hanson says. He and his brothers got an early start using overlapping vocal arrangements, singing gospel songs and a cappella before shifting to their current rock-pop incarnation.

As Hanson explains, a traditional chord is based on a three-note foundation, and often pop vocal groups will use those foundational three as their base. “The fourth and the fifth voices allow you to have that harmony foundation, but then someone can branch off and sing a lead part,” he says. “With five notes, you can add what’s sometimes called the ‘money note’ — the note that pulls against the chord. It might stay straight, while the rest of the singers are singing a change. If it’s done right, it can be really compelling, especially if you are doing layered vocal tracks. You are creating accent parts.”

With four instead of five singers performing, Hanson stresses that these complicated changes are still possible, though “the biggest challenge is that you have to pull away an element from your core, foundational chord, and decide if you’re going to focus more on the lead singer who is doing counterpoint, or stay and focus on the foundational melody of the song,” he says.

“For a vocal group, five parts allow you to have a completely robust balance of harmonies and still create the little changes and shifts that a pop record accentuates — the trading off of lead vocals,” he says. Take away a part like Cabello’s, “and you’ve limited your ability to create that kind of drama.” But fear not, Harmonizers: “It’s nothing that a new song can’t solve.”
