Take a look back at the Hanson brothers through the years

By | May 18, 2018

Tulsa World

More than 25 years after Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson’s first performance at Mayfest, they have seen the world, played “MMMBop” more times than they can fathom and built an enormous and fervent fanbase.

The creativity of the Tulsa-native brothers, so many years after they started their career as pre-teens, shows no signs of slowing.

Since The Hop Jam, a craft beer and music festival founded by the brothers, is this Sunday take a look back at photos of them through the years.

WEEKLY PIC

Well, we are finally here at HANSON Day week. Tomorrow the activities begin, and they don’t stop till we roll into our beer and music festival, The Hop Jam, on Sunday. Who is ready for the best HDay ever?

MESSAGE FROM THE BAND

HANSON Day is here! Gotta take that in for a minute. The first events for HANSON Day weekend start today and things don’t stop until Saturday evening. Depending on when you read this, we are either rocking out to karaoke or watching a movie under the stars! Possibly standing in a line for Registration…

Before the weekend is through, we will see many of you face to face at one of the many events either at Game Night or the Storytellers Concert or the Group Photo Session on Friday afternoon, but before it gets too crazy we just want to say we hope your time in Tulsa feels like a reunion, like a great time you got to share with new and old friends a like.

For those who were not able to make the trip to Tulsa, we are excited to share that the HANSON Day Concert and State Of The Band will be streamed live! The stream will start at 6PM CT (with some consideration for HANSON Time) and will loop the following week (through Memorial Day) to make sure everyone has a chance to watch.

We are looking forward to taking questions during the State Of The Band and giving answers about our plans for the year. Answers to questions like, why we wanted to try our hands at a project like String Theory. More soon.

Hanson got its start in Green Country at Eastland Mall.

Now our hometown band is all grown up.
“We did school on the road,” said Taylor Hanson.

“I don’t think we ever said, we want to be famous,” said Zac. “It was very natural. It was something that was just flowing out.”

Thursday at 10, Erin Christy sits down with the brothers to find out where they’re going now.

“A lot’s going to be announced soon,” said Taylor.

“You can’t do extraordinary things without living an extraordinary lifestyle,” Zac said.

Remember the boy band Hanson? Its members, who got their start in the early ’90s, aren’t boys anymore. And their most recent partnerships with orchestras nationwide prove it.

Hanson toured the world last year to mark its 25th anniversary; this year, to celebrate 26, the group is presenting the Hanson String Theory and sharing stages with orchestras around the country, including the Colorado Symphony. The program is being billed as “a musical manifesto with new and career-spanning works” from the band.

The Colorado concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, September 8, at Boettcher Concert Hall in the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

Tickets go on sale at 8 a.m. Friday, May 18, at the Colorado Symphony website.

WEEKLY PIC

25 years in, we are still seeing new places for the very first time. We had an great trip to beautiful Norway at the end of last month. Here’s a view from high above our last stop Bergen.

MESSAGE FROM THE BAND

We are back from a great week playing in Norway feeling energized by going to so many new places, but more than anything, we are excited about what’s in store for the year. Thank you to all the fans who came out to the shows. After more than two decades of waiting, we know four concerts is just too few, but we are hoping this is just the first of many trips. HANSON Day weekend is fast approaching. For some that means a trip to Oklahoma, for us it means sharing more about String Theory and sharing new music for the first time.  The new Members EP Animal Instincts is ready for consumption and all that is left is for HDay to arrive. As of today, we have locked ourselves away in a cabin somewhere in rural Oklahoma to spend a few days talking about music.  Before the week is through, we should be done with the crafting of the story of String Theory and be able to move on to rehearsal and finalizing arrangements.  We are so excited about this project and can’t wait until you can all hear it. More soon.

Top 5 Best Bands From Oklahoma

By | May 9, 2018

Aceable

Oklahoma has given us many things over the years: Sonic Drive-In, the setting for the 1996 cinematic masterpiece Twister, and winds that come sweepin’ down the plain. Most of all, it has given us great music. To help jog your memory, we have compiled a list of what are arguably the five best bands to ever come out of the Sooner State.

1. Hanson (1997)

hanson

Hailing from Tulsa, Oklahoma, these teens came screaming onto the pop music scene with their first single, “Mmmbop”, and the release of their debut album, Middle of Nowhere. The album, written by the Tulsa brothers themselves (then-aged 11, 14, 16), went 4x Platinum and garnered three Grammy nominations. Did you write anything that was nominated for three Grammys when you were 11? Yeah, me neither. And if you grew up in the 90s and you say Taylor Hanson wasn’t your first love, congratulations –– you’re a liar.

Middle of Nowhere Recommended Track: “Madeline”

2. Hanson (Every Christmas, 1997-The end of time)

hanson

Hailing from Tulsa, Oklahoma, these brothers followed up a highly successful debut album release by releasing a highly successful Christmas album in the SAME YEAR. Over-achievers, much? Released in November 1997, Snowed In became an instant holiday classic and will forever be etched into our hearts and Christmas playlists.

Snowed In Recommended Track: “Merry Christmas Baby”

3. Hanson (2004)

hanson 2004

Hailing from Tulsa, Oklahoma and fed up with their record label’s B.S., band members Isaac, Taylor, and Zac (who are brothers, FYI) decided to take matters into their own hands. In 2003, the created their own record label, 3CG Records. The following year, they released their third major album, Underneath, proving they could still experience success outside of a major label.

Underneath Recommended Track: “Penny & Me”

4. Hanson (2000)

hanson this time around

Hailing from Tulsa, Oklahoma, these three bandmates who share the same mother and father, released their second studio album This Time Around in May 2000. The album took a departure from the bubblegum pop style of it’s predecessor, Middle of Nowhere, but fans and critics were on board for Hanson’s newer, older sound. Around allowed Hanson a successful transition from the darlings of bubblegum pop into a more mature pop rock sound, paving the way for them to release six more albums (not including live albums) over the next 17 years.

This Time Around Recommended Track: “Dying To Be Alive” (but also “If Only”)

5. Hanson (2010)

hanson

Hailing from Tulsa, Oklahoma, the very closely-related Isaac, Taylor, and Zac released their fifth studio album, Shout It Out. Thirteen years after their debut album, Shout It Out brought yet another musical transition from these talented bb bois, expanding their musical roots into more playful piano pop, even bringing a little brass action at times.

Shout It Out Recommended Track: “Kiss Me When You Come Home”

Honorable Mention: Hanson (1994)

hanson 1994

Hailing from Tulsa, Oklahoma, this brotherly trio actually got their start performing at popular music festival SXSW in Austin, TX. It was at the SXSW closing softball game that these tiny geniuses (aged 14, 11, and 9 at the time) started winning over the ears and hearts of America. Thankfully, they haven’t stopped since.
