MESSAGE FROM THE BAND
Best do your warm ups, because today we start back in the studio. The pressure is on since it is time to start vocals. We usually record in phases – Basics, Overdubs, Vocals. Basics means the core instruments; things like drums and bass, piano, primary guitar parts and anything that fits into the rhythm track. “Overdubs” is everything else. Triangle, check. Tubular bells, check. If it falls somewhere between the kitchen sink and fairy dust, it is an overdub. Vocals usually come last. They are the icing on the cake. They are the last piece, the glue that puts the sheen on the whole arrangement. Vocals come last because they are one of the hardest things to get right. Your voice has incredible dynamic range, but it is subject to the elements like no other instrument. What did you have for breakfast? How cold is it outside? How’s your headspace? Very small things can make a big difference.
If you wondering, the weather in Tulsa is beautiful and our heads are still full of Disney magic. The only outstanding factor is breakfast!
If we are talking about Vocals, that means we are nearly done recording. Just a few more weeks and we will be tying a bow on this album and putting it up on a high shelf for next year. We will not be sharing the full album in 2016, but as we get nearer to December 25th we look forward to sharing more from the making of Wintry Mix and hopefully playing you some of the songs that made it onto Santa’s Nice List.
