Cast your minds back to 1997. It is May 24th and you are in your living room. Your mom has told you to stop playing Diddy Kong Racing on the Nintendo 64, or those of you who were still traditional in the early days of the digital age, to take your nose out of a new book that has got all the newspapers and entertainment outlets buzzing; Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone!

Your mom tells you to turn to the MTV channel because they are doing a top song chart rundown and everyone’s favorite cookie cutter summer jam ‘Mmmbop’ by Hanson (a band of three adorable brothers) has the top position within arm’s reach. Hanson has been riding on the emergent wave of industry backing and the adoration of teenage girls (and boys) for a while now, but it’s taken ’til now for the band to reach the wave’s crest by snatching the number one spot on the Billboard charts.

You and your mom are delighted.

The main reason that you and your mom and everyone you know are so in love with ‘Mmmbop’ and Hanson is due to its youngest member Zac Hanson, the band’s drummer. 12-year-old Hanson is a heartthrob sensation to young teens and a music exec’s financial fantasy. With long golden locks and a pout that even Angelina Jolie would be envious of, this 1997 version of Justin Bieber is a cultural phenomenon.

So where did Zac Hanson go?

Although Zac and his brothers continued to make music and tour through the noughties for their core and loyal fanbase, it must be said that the band had slowly started to shift to the peripheries of pop culture, with ‘Mmmbop’ adopting a legendary throwback status, being discovered all over again (through the help of YouTube) to feature in junior high prom parties playlists across the world.

Zac recently admitted that his band has fans now who are younger than the music that made them famous.

With a little less spotlight pressure, Zac has been busy leading a fulfilling and busy life. He married Kathryn Tucker in 2006, and as of 2013, the couple now have three children together. Zac also recently just celebrated his 30th birthday.
