Hanson Go Big on New Album 'Anthem'

New album features collabs with Fitz and the Tantrums, a throwback sound

Hanson had their fans in mind when writing their sixth studio album, “Anthem.”

“It’s got a lot of big sounding songs,” Taylor Hanson tells Billboard about the album, out June 18. “We really thought of the audience when we did them – we imagined the interaction with the crowd.”

When Billboard recently caught up with the trio on the “Hangover Part III” red carpet, the siblings revealed that they wrote and produced their entire forthcoming record as a brotherly unit.

The “MMMBop” singers describe their latest project as a fun record that “has got size to it.” While it contains a modern Hanson sound, Taylor says to expect “a few cool throwbacks.”

Hanson released the album’s first single, “Get The Girl Back” on April 9 – a track which Fitz and the Tantrums bassist Joe Karnes and lead vocalist Michael Fitzpatrick appear on. According to Zac Hanson, the duo is also featured on one additional track on “Anthem.”

The disc features horn arrangements by Jerry Hey. “We also had some friends doing strings,” adds oldest brother Isaac. “The album is hopefully anthemic,” quipped Taylor with a cheesy grin.

Also on the agenda for the brothers this year is the celebration of their 21st anniversary as a band and the release of their Hanson-branded IPA called MmmHops.

Theater-goers who catch “The Hangover Part III” this weekend will spot “MMMBop” in the opening sequence.
