Hanson heats things up at Coney

The Hanson brothers’ “Shout it Out” tour show came to a close Monday night to raucous applause at Coney Island’s Moonlite Gardens, as keyboardist Taylor Hanson hopped across the stage and encouraged fans to “heat things up.”

“It’s not hot enough out there, guys,” he told the audience. “I want to see you shake and move.”

Formed in Tulsa, Okla., Hanson is the brothers Isaac, 30; Taylor, 27; and Zac, 25. Best known for their 1997 hit “MMMBop,” the brothers have since moved away from their bubbly pop antics of yesteryear. These days, Hanson creates an assured pop-rock sound that highlights each brother’s individual talents and vocal harmonies.

Isaac plays guitar, and Zac keeps things steady on the drum kit. The brothers were joined Monday evening by a rhythm guitarist and bassist.

Spirits were high and the night light and airy as the mostly female crowd clapped and sang along emphatically.

Isaac, ever the joker, reflected the mood of the night.

“We changed our name to Vampire Hanson,” Isaac said, before imitating Sesame Street’s Count von Count. “We’re going to play three, no, four more songs!”

The size of the audience left a lot to the imagination, but what it lacked in quantity it gained in enthusiasm and sheer noise. The fans ranged from the very young to Hanson contemporaries. Die-hard fans of the ilk imitated the “Twilight” movie series by wearing “Team Taylor” T-shirts.

Hanson played a 105-minute set that drew equally from the group’s eight studio albums. The show featured songs from the brothers’ 15-year career – from the recent “Thinkin’ Bout Something,” to “Great Divide” (2006), to the one that started it all – “MMMBop.”

The brothers displayed some of their musical inspiration by covering older songs, as well.

“We’re gonna take you back to Memphis,” said Taylor, before the group played Sam and Dave’s “Hold On, I’m Comin’.”

As the night came to an end, Isaac expressed his gratitude to the band’s loyal fans.

“Thanks for sticking with us for more than a decade, guys,” he said. “How about we do this for 15-20 more years?”

Indianapolis four-piece The Working Hour and California’s Rooney opened the night with their own take on casually cool piano rock.

Zac's Science Song

By | August 24, 2010

Since the @HansonTickets account has gotten to 500+ followers, as promised we are posting the science song Zac made up. The radio appearance was at the Carnegie Science Center, which is why the song is all about science and the ball fountain they had there.

Hanson Shows Growth With Latest Effort

The Hanson brothers have tossed their hat in this summer’s music arena with their latest release Shout It Out. Anyone looking for the playfulness of “Mmm Bop” may be initially disappointed, but in the end pleasantly surprised. The selection of songs displayed on Shout It Out (which was completely written and produced by the Hanson brothers) aptly displays the completion of the maturation process of the Tulsa sibling trio as artists, and as men. Even though iTunes classifies this album as “Rock,” it is not to be typecast, it has something for everyone.

The lead single, “Thinking About Something” was the perfect choice to formally introduce this album to the listening masses. It’s catchy hook and Motown feel is infectious. In fact, if you close your eyes, you might even be able to visualize Issac, Taylor, and Zac in matching suits pulling of the Temptations’ classic shuffleboard step.

If it’s the piano ballad you want, then it’s the piano ballad you get with the track “Use Me Up.” This is a very emotional piece that gets convincingly pulled off by the very evident harmonic chemistry shared by the Hanson clan. It is also very Richard Marx-ish.

“Make It Out Alive” seems to call on the pep from The Foundations’ vintage hit “Build Me Up Buttercup” while laying soulful lyrics on top of rock production. The guys even try to school the fellas on the art of courtship with “Give a Little.” They provide a step-by-step guide for winning the cat and mouse game by delivering lines like “…leave an empty shoulder/let her move in closer…” over a Ska-ish, yet Rock-ish beat.

Like most albums nowadays, not every track can be a stand out, and Shout It Out comes with its fair share of filler. Some of Hanson’s songs come off sounding like imitations of the superior songs of this album. “Me, Myself, and I” seems to have been created in the mold of “Use Me Up.” It’s another piano ballad that Bryan Adams could have stepped in and done, and no one would be the wiser. Nice song, but not on the same level as “Use Me Up.” The same goes for “And I Waited,” which gives the audience the same Ska feel as “Give A Little,” except they threw in more Rock and R&B elements, which can confuse the listener on which direction the guys were trying to take.

Majority of the tracks on Shout It Out deserve a fair and full listen. “Voice In the Chorus” is a nice and entertaining upbeat track, if you can look past the sound resemblance to Maroon 5. “These Walls” has a heavy R&B influence and allows Hanson to showcase their more soulful side. Really the only track I could not get into was “Carry You There.” To quote legendary American Idol judge Randy Jackson, “it was just ah-ight” and “I wasn’t really feelin’ it, dawg!” It came off as boring and uninspired. It never really caught my attention, but to each his own.

All in all, this latest effort by Hanson is very multi-dimensional and beautifully displays the group’s ease within themselves and comfort with their position in the music industry. Even though their style extends over different genres, there is only one label that sticks out to describe Shout It Out…refreshing.

HANSON ANNOUNCE THIRD LEG OF SHOUT IT OUT NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

By | August 24, 2010
FEATURING JARROD GORBEL (HONORARY TITLE) ON SALE STARTING FRI AUG 27 FIRST SINGLE “THINKING ‘BOUT SOMETHIN’” TOP 10 ON VH1 CHARTS AND CLIMBING AT RADIO

HANSON is proud to announce the launch of the third leg of their North American Shout It Out Tour, which begins November 1, in support of their critically acclaimed fifth album, Shout It Out, released on their own independent 3CG Records, which debuted #2 on the Billboard independent charts. The final leg of the tour takes the band to the southeast and east coast, following the success of their summer tour across the south and midwest. Tickets go on sale starting Friday Aug 27th (ww.Hanson.net/tour).

Coinciding with the tour, the multi-Grammy-nominated band has been enjoying a massive resurgence in response to the album’s first single and video “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’”, available at all major digital outlets. The single continues to move up the charts at radio, and the emotive retro dance infused music video quickly garnered over 2 million views online and has climbed into the top 10 on VH1’s top 20 countdown. The video, featuring a guest performance by “Weird” Al Yankovic, is an exuberant homage to classic film The Blues Brothers, recreating the iconic scene where the band’s soulful music incites hundreds of people to dance in the street. The excitement has spread to the band’s fanbase, inspiring them to reenact the video’s dance sequence in flashmobs, around the world.

On the Shout It Out Tour the band continues to live up to their reputation as a dynamic live act featuring music from the new album, as well as songs from across their 13 year catalogue and an ever changing list of covers, reflecting their classic R&B and Rock ‘n’ Roll roots each night. Following the band’s recent sold out five night stand in New York featuring all five of their albums performed in their entirety, the New York Times noted, “HANSON has evolved into a nuanced and largely respected musical outfit”.

Billboard said that Shout It Out represents some of the band’s “most soulful work ever committed to record”, while Salon hailed that the new single “may be their finest moment yet”, Entertainment Weekly praised “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’” as “a delicious, catchy slice of pop- soul”, and Idolator predicted, “don’t be surprised if there’s a Hanson revival in 2010”

The third leg will feature Jarrod Gorbel, formerly leader of rock band The Honorary Title, coinciding with the release of his debut solo album Devil’s Made A New Friend. The first two legs of the tour have brought together a wide array of music fans, with direct support from Rooney and A Rocket To The Moon, as well as a local independent artist in each market who won the chance to open the show via contests in partnership with ourstage.com.

Throughout the tour the band is continuing their activism efforts, raising funds to fight extreme poverty and HIV/AIDS in Africa (TakeTheWalk.net) through hosting one-mile barefoot walks in each city with fans. In partnership with Livestream, the band has also integrated dynamic livestreaming content into every aspect of their activities, streaming everything from live acoustic performances, interviews and guest appearances by tour mates to their walk events.  These streams further the direct connection with their fans that the band has worked hard to maintain for over a decade (Hanson.net/Alive or livestream.com/Hansonmusic).

Shout It Out released on HANSON’s own 3CG Records on June 8, was written and produced by HANSON, augmented with special guests: Funk Brothers bassist Bob Babbitt, who played on some of Motown’s greatest hits, as well as horn arranger Jerry Hey, who worked with Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Earth, Wind and Fire and many more.

Zac's Science Song – help us get to 500 followers!

By | August 22, 2010

Friday morning at the Q92.9 radio performance, Taylor accidentally hit the drum button on the keyboard which ended up leading to Zac (with a little help from Taylor and Isaac) making up a song about science (as we were in the science center) The song is hilarious and the “chorus” mentions “Balls in the Water”, which is what we have been calling the song.

We have a video of this song and will be posting it on the site once the @HansonTickets twitter gets to 500 followers. We are just under 30 people away from 500 right now.

(Note: We will be heading out the MIxfest in Baltimore shortly, so there might be a bit of a delay between hitting 500 and posting the video. But once we hit 500 it will get posted and probably some other videos from the radio performance as well!)
