Isaac Hanson of Hanson performs at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino Stage and Pavilion on Sunday.

Someone at Summerfest seriously underestimated the size of the Hanson fan base. The brotherly band largely, and incorrectly, classified as the one-hit wonder behind 1997 earworm “MMMBop,” was designated to one of the Big Gig’s smaller stages, the Potawatomi Bingo Casino Stage & Pavilion, for its Sunday headlining set.

Even with people standing on top of each other on benches and picnic tables, fans still spilled out into the main drag.

It was fitting that Hanson, celebrating its 20th anniversary, kicked things off with “Shout It Out”: This was one loud, excited crowd, showing its appreciation with ear-splitting screams, clap-alongs, fist pumps and singing (“There are beautiful voices here,” lead singer and pianist Taylor Hanson told the crowd). The band seemed just as excited to be there: Taylor and drummer Zac were all smiles, while guitarist Isaac sported some dark shades during the Motown-indebted “Thinking ’bout Somethin.’ ”

Message from the Band, Summerfest, Merchandise and more in this week’s newsletter!

From The Band!

Well, the summer is in full swing here in the US, with the season of beaches, BBQ’s and near death experiences during the Independence Day celebration where many exploding things are fashioned and released into the atmosphere. We have had a much quieter several weeks since the HANSON DAY gathering back in May but there is a lot going on at HANSON HQ. We are planning tours, working on music and coming up with cool ideas (we think they are cool) for events and special products to come out later this year. On another note we have several summer one off shows which will be great to keep our musical chops sharp (Summerfest this weekend in Millwaukee). Of course we are also pumped for the coming Canadian shows and the almost SOLD OUT Australian Shout It Out Tour (don’t forget to get your tickets if you are in Sydney or Brisbane, they are almost gone). There are a lot of creative juices flowing in HANSONland, and we are also trying to stay cool in the depths of the record breaking American summer heat. We hope you are all staying cool, and have a great week wherever in the world you may be!

-Isaac, Taylor and Zac

Fan of the Month July – Phyllis

By | July 1, 2012

Name: Phyllis B

Age: 26

Location: Tucson, AZ

What is the very first memory of Hanson that you have? I was 11 years young sitting at home watching TV and an eggos waffles commercial came on with Hanson playing in a barn singing Thinking of You. Never saw that commercial again in my life.

How many times have you seen Hanson in concert? Favorite concert memory?: 3 times. When Hanson came to Ohio when I was 12 or 13 my father took me to see them for the first time in concert. It was the best father daughter time ever!

What is your favorite Hanson song and why? Crazy Beautiful and Lost Without Each Other because it reminds me of my husband

Why do you like/love Hanson? I love Hanson because I can relate to their music. Every song has a meaning for me and they helped me get through my life. Still to this day I feel connected to them through their music. I wouldn’t be alive if Hanson wasn’t in my life!

How long have you been a Hanson fan? Ive been a fan for 15 years so far!

Why should you be fan of the month? I should be fan of the month because I want to thank Hanson for making such great music and to show them appreciation. Both my daughters were born to Hanson music playing. I’m so grateful for them and I want a chance to tell them that. I traveled over 5,000 miles on a greyhound bus for 3 days from Tucson, AZ all the way to Cleveland, OH in November to see the!!! I love them!!!

State a piece of trivia in regards to you & Hanson: I prayed the God every night when I was younger with a picture of Taylor that I would one day marry him.

MMMBop: Hanson all grown up

By | June 27, 2012

Nine to Five

WHERE have the brothers with long blond hair been since their hit song MMMBop?

They left Def Jam Records to start their own label 3CG Records, got married, had children, toured the States and worked on their latest album Shout it Out.

But after seven long years, the boys from Hanson are back to put on a show for their Australian fans.

“Truth is we have been working on our Australian tour for two years,” eldest brother Isaac said. “We had been saying how we needed to get back but it wasn’t happening the way we wanted it to … there was a lot going on with our American tour.

“We would do from 50 to 100 shows a year and realised among everything we had to cut it short.”

Before the boys shot to fame in 1997 and had millions of teenage girls lusting after them, they were just three teenage boys making music in their garage.

“We handled it well – as well as you can handle something that insane, but thought if it wasn’t me it will be someone else so I better be grateful,” Isaac said.

The brothers, Isaac, 31, Taylor, 29 and Zac 26, were known as the boys with flowing blonde locks and while it doesn’t bother them all too much, Isaac said it’s the music they hope matters most.

“I’m poking fun at my self when talking about long blond hair. I understand the realities to make a strong impression early on in your career and that’s something we are extremely proud of, but that’s just an image – what matters is music,” Isaac said.

This time around expect to see and experience a slightly different Hanson.

“Shout it Out is more of an R’n’B record – it’s very up tempo,” Isaac said. “What’s interesting is we have grown up and definitely evolved as a band but I think much of who we are and have been has stayed the same.”
