Will Mmmhops be a hit?

FORTUNE — Diddy has his DeLeon tequila. Marilyn Manson has his Mansinthe absinthe. And now the three brothers that make up Hanson — the 1990s teenybopper musical phenomenon — have Mmmhops beer.

The pale ale launched regionally last year in the Hansons’ home state of Oklahoma but became available online for the first time earlier this month. Middle brother Taylor Hanson says that every bottle in stock was gone within 24 hours. (He is now 31 and, if that’s not enough to make you feel old, he has also got an 11-year-old son.)

It’s a serious project for the Hanson brothers, who most will remember from their 1997 chart-topper, “MMMBop,” which intoxicated millions of listeners and propelled the group to national stardom.

The Hansons created the recipe with the brewers at Mustang Brewing Company in Oklahoma City, which produces the ale. Expect more brews in the future from what the trio is calling the Hanson Brothers Beer Company (not to be confused with the fictional Hanson Brothers ofSlapshot fame).

If you haven’t been following Hanson’s post-MMMBop career, tapping into suds might seem like a stretch for a group that once made teens and tweens swoon. But Taylor says that craft beer — local, higher quality, more meaningful — is in line with where their fan base is generationally. He may just be right: As was required of all girls in the ’90s, I had a favorite Hanson brother (Taylor, obviously). Today, I’m a fan of craft beers.

“In a way, Mmmhops is truly a mark in the sand for MMMBop coming of age,” Taylor says. “A huge group of the drinking audience across the world did grow up with that song.”

While the name is undeniably genius, the beer isn’t bad, either. For a pale ale, it’s got a bit of pop (7.5% alcohol content) and some sweetness — kind of like a Hanson song. It just won a gold medal at the World Beer Championship. “We’re aware enough of who we are and where we come from to know there’s a huge value in our history,” Taylor says, “but our history only gets us to the first drink.”

We won’t see a Hanson empire on the scale of Diddy’s, Taylor says, but the brothers have always exhibited an entrepreneurial streak: They have their own record label, do their own merchandising, run their own web properties, and organize music and beer festivals. The brothers have dabbled in food before, making boutique chocolates and roasting coffee seasonally with a roaster in their hometown.

“We really do see ourselves as a little cottage industry and a brand we want to share with other people,” Taylor says. “Especially since we started the label, we’ve realized that we’re in the Hanson business, not just the music business.”

Mmmhops is also a smart marketing move. The beer already has a built-in audience through its current base, but it’s also bound to at least pique the interest of anyone — fan or otherwise — who heard the song in the 1990s (which is pretty much everyone). It helps tell the story of where the band is today. “We’ve always been perceived as being a pretty wholesome group of guys,” Taylor says. “You don’t hear about drug abuse and rehab, but we’re also not the Osmonds.”

The beer acts as a distribution network for their music, too. Each bottle has a QR code, which gives you a free Hanson download when scanned. After struggling with my QR code reader for a bit, my iPhone started playing “Fired Up,” a song off the band’s 2013 album “Anthem.” I understand that the point is to reintroduce consumers to the Hanson of today, but for old times’ sake, I couldn’t help wishing the song had been “MMMBop.”

The Hanson Anthem

Two year’s ago Hanson played sold out shows across Australia; now they’re bringing their latest pop-rock offering, ‘Anthem’, back down under in August.

‘Anthem’ is the band’s sixth studio offering and boasts arching melodies and epic guitar riffs – something Zac Hanson, the band’s youngest member, says is something the brothers made a strong focus throughout the new record. “It’s not something that I would say is necessarily different to our other albums, but the guitars really do make a big comeback on ‘Anthem’.

“A strong guitar presence is something that’s always been a part of every Hanson album but it’s a sound that you really do hear predominantly on the new tracks; it’s all about the guitar this time,” Zac says. “It’s always interesting starting a new project, because you really don’t know where it will end up – and that’s part of the artistry, part of the journey and part of why we love to do what we do. We’ve always tried to write songs that get stuck in your head… in a good way, songs with great melodies that have people singing along. I think you really hear that on this record and we just can’t wait to go live with it.”

The writing and recording of ‘Anthem’ was split between Texas – where the basics were laid – and finished in Oklahoma, Hanson’s home state. “I think that’s something that sets us apart from other bands; we’re not just another group from California. It is always really important for us to capture the individual sound of the three of us playing and that’s something we worked on and recorded in our studio back home in Oklahoma – it felt right to do it there,” Zac says.

“As a band, as brothers, we always have such a desire to go back home and soak it all up. When you spend so much time travelling and away from home it’s really nice to just go back to Oklahoma and be inspired by the real ‘heartland’ of America.”

Hanson find inspiration in the sounds of skilful musicians of generations past; in the soulful charm of Motown, the melodies of Paul McCartney and Simon & Garfunkel and also in rock and roll — bands like AC/DC and Queen. “We aspire to longevity. There is this great catalogue of music that we’ve always looked up to and that makes us want to keep creating and keep playing. This new record is really ‘50s and ‘60s inspired but also has a bit more of a rock influence,” Zac says.

The band’s infectious new single, ‘Get The Girl Back’, sounds well and truly like the Hanson we’ve all come to know and love, with a twist: Hanson are well and truly all grown up and their new music is testament to the experiences the three have had along the way. “I think the sound of Hanson is rejuvenated on this next album; it’s evolved. And that’s come from experience and life and learning new skills and working with great artists along the way. We still aim to excite ourselves and be inspired. At its heart, our music is the same but it’s in a whole different context now,” Zac says. “Yes, we’re still a garage band from Oklahoma, but with new tricks under our belt.”

Zac was just 11 years old when ‘MMMbop’ came out and the group shot to stardom, but unlike so many other bands, Hanson were no one-hit wonder.

Now 28, Zac is still in awe of the career he has had, the magnitude of success that followed ‘MMMbop’ and the fact that he is, still doing what he loves so many years on. “I think that’s been the biggest challenge for us. When you have this kind of success, of which we’re so grateful for of course, the lines can be blurred… between what’s real and what’s not and you become accustomed to certain things,” Zac says.

“I think the fact that we have survived hasn’t been luck, it’s been really hard work. And the other major success in my book is that we all still like each other. When you’re family, you know exactly which buttons to press and there are things that can be said in the heat of the moment that you can’t take back. It’s extraordinary to me that no-one has given up on anyone yet… there’s still way too much music to make.”

And so old and new fans can be reassured there will be many more Hanson albums to come. “We’re always writing and always creating… we’re not anywhere near done yet,” Zac says.

Hanson to play CNE Bandshell in Toronto, Canada

By | May 28, 2014

Thursday August 28 – HANSON

With arching melodies, epic guitar riffs and rhythms inciting you to put your hands in the air, anthems give us a soundtrack to life’s defining moments. And for Hanson, their sixth studio albumAnthem marks the beginning of their third decade of making music together.

Over their first 20 years, brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson have made their mark. Five years building a fanbase as an independent band led to a meteoric rise with the 1997 international smash single MMMBop from their debut album Middle Of Nowhere. A long line of hits, four more studio albums, multiple Grammy nominations and over 16 million album sales followed. Over their second decade, the band charted their own course running an independent label while maintaining a coveted connection with their global fanbase, and in 2007 they launched a grassroots campaign to support poverty and HIV/AIDS relief in Africa.

90s idols Hanson reject talk of reality shows to concentrate on beer, music, marriage and kids

The brothers who caused teen hysteria in the mid 90s have come a long way since their MMMBop days.

As you would imagine, the three Taylor brothers — better known as Hanson — who are each married with kids, have been offered their own reality show. But middle brother Taylor confirmed it’s not what they’re about.

“Every week we get a request from a major production company to have our own reality show … they’re curious about our lives but we’re never in this to be famous.”

You can’t help but remember them as the sweet young boys, with golden locks who stole gen Y hearts.

But a lot has changed since then. Busy with not just their music career including their own label 3CG Records which began after leaving Def Jam Records, the boys have taken a liking to beer.

They launched their own ale MMMHops to celebrate their 21st anniversary last year.

Loyal fans will be pleased to know that the boys are coming back to Australia to launch their brand new album Anthem.

It includes their catchy pop rock single Get The Girl Back, with Twilight actor Nikki Reed and Two Broke Girls star Kat Dennings featuring in the video clip.

Taylor said following from their previous Australian tour in 2012, they felt extremely honoured to have such a strong Aussie following after so many years. Prior to that they hadn’t been Down Under for seven years.

“We really have an awesome history in Australia, we always have a great time,” Taylor, 31 said.

With a strong appreciation for their fans commitment, he’s just as grateful for the new lot who’ve jumped on board.

“The band is 22 years old now, the natural thing is to grow but more than anything it’s less about being young or old … it’s always about the music and you have to try and make sure it finds an audience,” Taylor said.

Hanson kick off their Anthem tour in Brisbane before coming to The Enmore Theatre on August 8.
