35 ’90s Songs That Were Really, Really Weird

By | May 16, 2016

Bustle

The ’90s was a strange and beautiful decade. AOL screen names were the norm (once you finally got a modem, that is) and, if you wanted to buy music, you had to physically get it at an actual store. Crazy, right? Some of that music you bought, though, may have been some of the weirdest ’90s songs ever, because hey, you didn’t know better back then. The decade gave us infectious pop beats that accompanied songs about thongs and peaches, lyrics about not liking Chinese food, and just being too sexy for your shirt.

The ’90s also provided so many unforgettable pop stars: Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Backstreet Boys, and N Sync, just to name a few. But then there are some of the, ahem, weirder ones. Some artists were one hit wonders, with bizarre hits like OMC’s “How Bizarre” or “Summer Girls” By LFO. A few of the songs didn’t only sound weird, but had equally strange music videos to accompany the single, like Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” And then there are songs that live in infamy, but I still have no idea what the lyrics mean, like Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping” and Hanson’s “MMMBop.”

So let’s go back in time and relive the weird, yet wonderful music of the ’90s, one strange song at a time.

5. “MMMBop” By Hanson

The infamous unintelligible hit by the Hanson brothers, who were so young and long-haired in the ’90s.

Hanson Sings National Anthem in Three Part Harmony!

Hanson Sings National Anthem in Three Part Harmony! (Video)

Hanson takes the field to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Tulsa Drillersminor league baseball game against theArkansas Travelers at ONEOK Field on Saturday (May 14) in Tulsa, OK.

The brothers – Taylor, Zac, and Isaac – are Tulsa natives and performed a beautiful three-part harmony rendition of the National Anthem.

“Singing the National Anthem tonight at the @TulsaDrillers game! Hope to see you all here! -ITZ,” they tweeted earlier in the day.

Remember Hanson? They’re all grown up and crushing the national anthem

By | May 15, 2016

Fox Sports

If you’re reading this and you were alive in 1997, you probably remember the pop band Hanson. You know, the three brothers with long hair. “MMMBop”!

Well, Isaac, Taylor and Zac are all grown up now and still making music. The guys, who are from Tulsa, Oklahoma, recently performed the national anthem before a Tulsa Drillers minor league baseball game, and it was the equivalent of getting to watch Mike Trout play at Triple-A on a rehab assignment.

And in case you weren’t alive in 1997, or you were but you’re still unclear on who Hanson is … “MMMBop”.

Tulsa-based band RVRB is set to open The Hop Jam Music and Beer Festival’s main stage, with five bands selected to fill Guthrie Green with music on May 22.

RVRB will kick off the day’s music on the Main Stage with music at 3 p.m. May 22. New this year, the runner-ups in the Tulsa World Opening Band Contest will play all day on Guthrie Green. Those bands are Groucho, Nightingale, Nicnos, The Young Vines and Sam Westhoff.

The acts are all the top vote getters in the contest, which ended voting Friday. There were 70 bands from across the state that entered the contest. That number was narrowed to 12 by Hanson, and the final six were selected by fans. More than 5,000 votes were cast in the contest.

All music during The Hop Jam is free. After RVRB kicks off music on the main stage, the festival will feature music from Chase Kerby & the Villains, John Moreland, X Ambassadors, Albert Hammond Jr. and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

RVRB formed recently with their first live show this year. Led by Cameron Mitchell, the band is made up of Nick Livingston, Josh Kluge, Ben Blount and Daniel Jones. An EP, “Faded,” was released last year.

The Hop Jam is free to attend for the music festival, with special packages for early access to the beer festival side. Packages start at $35 with $150 for the Craft Beer VIP ticket. More information about tickets and the festival is at thehopjam.com. A music VIP ticket is also available for access to air conditioning and concert seating.

The Hop Jam was established by Hanson in 2014 and expanded to include more beer and music each year. More than 20 brewers are expected to attend this year.

Hanson will also be selling raffle tickets to win a custom-made guitar shaped like a hop, created in Tulsa’s Fab Lab with proceeds benefiting the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.

WEEKLY PIC

Taylor Hanson discusses the stories behind songs with Hanson.net members at the HANSON Day 2015 lectures. Who’s joining us for HANSON Day 2016?

MESSAGE FROM THE BAND

It’s official, today we can say HAPPY HANSON DAY! 19 years ago today our state’s Governor declared today an honorary day for our band and from that point on you have helped make it a day to come together and share music and celebrate a world-wide community. Thinking about the almost two decades of celebration gets us really excited for the official HANSON DAY weekend with H.net fans from far and wide joining us in Tulsa.

Don’t miss out, in less than an hour one of the special HANSON.net Streams will be broadcasting taking you inside the creation of the LOUD EP, something you don’t want to miss.

This year’s HANSON DAY weekend events are going down two weeks from today and you still have untilSunday to RSVP so don’t miss the opportunity to be there when it all happens.

If you have not checked it out in a while, you should go to the HDay events page, HERE. We are continuing great traditions like the I Heart To Bowl tournament, plus the special art gallery featuring paintings from Zac and photos from Taylor, the I Heart Hanson store and the Fan Club dinners and the dance Party Taylor in the DJ Booth (Another one bites the dust). New events include (by popular demand), a HANSON Karaoke party hosted by Isaac Hanson and more new content!

One of our favorite things about the weekend is our special lectures that started a couple years ago. This year Zac will be again creating a tune right there in the room with YOU in his “Choo Choo Trains Of Thought” lecture, Taylor will be sharing an inside look at the composing of your favorite songs and playing selections just for you in the “Unwritten” lecture and Isaac will be sharing a message of purpose and conviction in his lecture “You Matter”.

Most importantly, every H.net member will be able to join us for the world premier of the ten new songs which make up the new H.net EP LOUD, Plus the second EP PLAY. Attendees will be able to not only listen to the show, but contribute to the creation of the PLAY EP because we are recording YOU live.

We hope you have a great HANSON DAY today, topped off with a special Stream, and we hope to see you in just a couple weeks for all the festivities!

What The Ale What the Ale: Fans come out for The Hop Jam Pub Crawl on Monday

By | May 3, 2016

Tulsa World

The Hop Jam beer tasting and concert will be here before you know it. The event, slated for May 22 in the Brady Arts District, will be an extravaganza of local, regional and international beers, with some great music to top it off. This year’s event will be twice the size of last year’s, with more than 60 breweries participating.
To get us in the mood, the Hop Jam team, or should I say Taylor and Zac Hanson, led a pub crawl Monday night from McNellie’s Public House to Dust Bowl and then to Fassler Hall.
Each of the venues gave out special-release pint glasses. McNellie’s featured local brews from Dead Armadillo, Dust Bowl featured beers from Marshall Brewing Co. and Stillwater’s Iron Monk Brewing Co. was served at Fassler Hall.
“This is really just a wind up for the festival. We are only a couple weeks away from the big day. We got a ton of craft beer fans out. It’s a great night to pump up the excitement for the opening band contest. We’re trying to encourage the bands to come out and get their fans voting,” said Taylor Hanson, one of the owners of the Hanson Brothers Beer Company.
The Hop Jam has an emphasis on local businesses and groups. It helps with local charities, musicians and brewers, but it also draws attention to Tulsa with visitors from all over the world.
Headlining the 2016 Hop Jam will be indie-folk band Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. The lineup will also feature The Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr., alt-rock band X Ambassadors and Tulsa singer-songwriter John Moreland.
The concert is free. To purchase tickets to the beer tasting or to vote for your favorite band in The Hop Jam Opening Band Contest, go to thehopjam.com. Voting ends at midnight Friday.
Local breweries scheduled to be at Hop Jam include:
405 Brewing
Anthem Brewing
Black Mesa Brewing
Choc Beer
COOP Ale Works
Dead Armadillo Brewing
Elk Valley Brewing
Hanson Brother Beer
Iron Monk Brewing
Kolibri Ale Works
