Hanson return to Epcot stage for 3 nights

By | October 26, 2016

Orlando Sentinel

Zac Hanson, one third of America’s favorite trio of brothers (OK, at least mine), knows there are certain expectations when people see his band headlining somewhere.

“You have certain songs planned and you have a certain understanding and knowing of what people like and what people expect,” said Zac Hanson, the band’s youngest member and drummer. “But every night you’re trying to think of something new to add in.”

Hanson returns to Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival this weekend for three nights and nine performances. It’s the band’s seventh appearance in as many years at the annual Walt Disney World event.

I’ll give you a minute to scratch your head and cock it to the side like a confused puppy as you remember who exactly Hanson is.

The brothers from Tulsa, Okla., burst onto the music scene almost 20 years ago (!!) with a little ditty that everyone knows even if they’re not cognizant of it.

That’s right, “Mmmbop” is nearly two decades old.

If you needed another reason to feel old, like me, let’s quickly discuss the fact that even as the youngest member, Zac Hanson is 31 years old and has four children. Let’s just add another layer to this: Middle brother Taylor is 33 and has five children, and eldest Isaac is 35 (staring down the barrel of 36) and has three children.

“Growing up; it’s funny,” said Zac Hanson. “Obviously, that’s exactly what’s happened. Think of us as old guys with high voices.”

Before anyone laughs at the idea of Hanson playing 30-minute shows at the American Adventure Pavilion, it should be recognized that the band is considered a festival favorite, drawing crowds who sing back line-by-line a catalog of more than seven albums produced over the years. Hanson is one of the few acts that holds court with adoring fans for three nights.

“We’re going to be doing this as long as we possibly can,” said Zac Hanson.

In a mostly uneventful year, the brothers have not toured. Their EP “Play,” released digitally earlier this month, is their only new material.

“This is really more of a planning year for us,” said Zac Hanson. “It’s us looking at the career and what we want to do to celebrate it and what we want to do next.”

A big 2017 is in store: The band will turn 25 and plans to release a second Christmas album (insert girlish squeal of delight here) currently underway in the studio. With a working title of “A Wintery Mix,” the album will join 1997’s “Snowed In.”

The band’s annual return to Disney also gives the brothers a chance to showcase their Mmmhops beer, a pale ale they brew in Tulsa.

“It’s a different kind of experience,” Zac Hanson said of the Food & Wine Festival. “But it has a charm that is memorable and desirable and that’s why we keep coming back.”

Wintry Mix Updates

By | October 25, 2016

Hanson is currently in the studio working on their next Christmas album, due out for release in 2017.  As we find out about songs that might be included in the track listing, we will be updating the “Wintry Mix” page on the lyrics section of the site.  Currently there are 3 songs listed.

Please note, the December 25, 2017 release date is just a place holder.  Once an official track listing is released any songs mentioned that did not make it to the final cut will be moved to the Covers / Unreleased pages.  In the event Wintry (Wintery?) Mix ends up being a working title, the link will be changed to reflect the correct title.

WEEKLY PIC

Having fun working on our new Christmas album with some old friends.

MESSAGE FROM THE BAND

We are almost a week into basic tracking for our new Christmas album and it is sounding amazing!  We have been doing a little more than a song a day getting almost everything except vocals.  Our hope is before we leave for our shows at Epcot we will have finished except some vocal fairy dust (we will pick up some fresh dust while at the most magical place on earth).  If you were wondering, yes we are moving quite fast.  It we keep this pace all the way to the end this will be our fastest album recording by far!

So far we have written four original Christmas songs for Wintry Mix, but it seems like every other night someone is humming a new idea to add to the mix.  Finding the balance is hard, but it is really just like any other album.  No matter how you go about it, there are always great songs that end up on the cutting room floor.

We are about a year off from Wintry Mix hitting shelves, but don’t worry we won’t make you wait that long before we share. The final stages of recording won’t happen for a few months, but when we get a little closer to December 25th we look forward to giving fans a sneak peek into the studio to see and hear some of what we are working on.

The weather in Oklahoma has started to turn cold, sweatshirts and jackets are still optional, but quickly becoming a necessity.  The chilly weather is a welcome change, but partly because we know come January, when the weather is at it’s worst we will be heading down to Jamaica for the fifth annual Back To The Island. Last year the islanders said it was overwhelmingly our best year ever. Of course we see that as a challenge, so we are trying to double down on a good thing and use member’s feedback to make things even better.  January seems like a long way away, but in a flash we will be standing on the beach breaking new years resolutions without a care in the world.

-Isaac, Taylor and Zac

The H-Bomb Show – Bomb Shelter: Get Involved!

By | October 16, 2016

Need your help for our end of year show.

I wanted to do something different for a holiday episode that will double as the end of our first 6 months as a show. So from now until early December, I’ll be taking email submissions that tell us why you love Hanson.

That request is open to your interpretation. It can be brief, it can be long-winded, it can be sappy, it can be a bizarre story of how Hanson impacted your life. It can mean whatever you want it to mean.

I finally managed to get Holly Snider to agree to do a show, so I’ll have her with me and we’ll be reading your submissions. On top of that, I’m going to be gathering as many past guests as I can to come on and talk to us about why THEY love Hanson.

Email submissions to:
hbombshow@hanson.zone

Again, no requirements for this, other than your name and where you live.

Deadline: 12/4/16. If you miss the deadline by a few days it’s no big deal, but we’ll be recording the episode within a week or two of that point. Also, if you don’t do this, Hanson will think no one likes them and it will ruin their Christmas.
