Hanson To Launch New Celebration Tour With Two Concerts In Minnesota

While the world knows them as the kids who sang “MMMBop” in the 1990s, fans know Hanson as a talented multi-platinum-selling Grammy-nominated trio of brothers with a catalog of multiple studio albums.

Isaac, Taylor, and Zac are going to be hitting the road on a new tour in 2024, and they announced they’ll be kicking this tour off with two concert dates in Minnesota.

The tour, being called “Underneath: Experience Tour”, is being billed as a celebration of Hanson being an independent act and their third album “Underneath”, which came out in April of 2004.

The band will be celebrating with a re-release of the album that will feature some rarities and new recordings. In addition, the trio will embark on a 12-city tour this fall.

In a release from the band, they say the tour will feature a series of two-night experiences in each city they visit. The first night will feature all-acoustic “unplugged” arrangements of their music, while the second night will be a full-band electric performance. The tour will also offer an exclusive late-night dance party hosted by Taylor Hanson one of the nights.

The tour kicks off in the Twin Cities, with two shows at the Fillmore Minneapolis. Night one in Minnesota will be on Thursday, October 3 at 7 pm. This acoustic night will be kicked off by opening act Matthew Sweet, and this is also the night of Taylor’s dance after party, after the show.

Night two is Friday, October 4, also at 7 pm at the Fillmore. This is the full, electric show that will also feature opening act Phantom Planet.

The band is selling tickets in different combinations for this two-night experience. You can buy tickets for just the night one concert, night two concert, the after-party, and for the full two-night experience.

Tickets go on sale at 10 am on Friday, June 14 via the Hanson website. You can see more about these shows and details about the rest of the tour here.

Newly elected Recording Academy Trustees Dani Deahl, Taylor Hanson, Torae Carr, and Sara Gazerak have a history of advocacy for music people. Get to know them below.

The Recording Academy’s Board of Trustees has a history of being filled with members that are both passionate about making music and advocating for music creators. The newly elected slate of trustees is no exception and four of the new members continuously show their dedication to advocacy.

Those Trustees are Dani Deahl, Taylor Hanson, Torae Carr, and Sara Gazerak. They’re four of a total of 19 leaders of diverse backgrounds and disciplines who have assumed their position on the 2024-2025 Board of Trustees.

Effective June 1, the newly elected Trustees joined the Academy’s midterm Trustees, including National Officers Tammy Hurt (Chair), Dr. Chelsey Green (Vice Chair), Gebre Waddell (Secretary/Treasurer), and Christine Albert (Chair Emeritus).

Their mission is to uphold the Academy’s core values: to serve and represent the music community at-large through its commitment to promote diversity, equity and inclusionfight for creators’ rightsprotect music people in needpreserve music’s history, and invest in its future.

About that fight for creator’s rights, specifically: read on for these four Trustees’ advocacy bona fides.

Taylor Hanson

You know that surname: he’s a former Texas Chapter President, three-time GRAMMY nominated artist and member of the band Hanson.

Last August, Recording Academy members of the Texas Chapter, including Taylor Hanson, headed to Oklahoma City to meet with state government officials to build up the relationship between the Oklahoma music community and state leaders.

Throughout the day, the group met with Lieutenant Governor Matt Pinnell and the Deputy Director of the Oklahoma Film and Music Office, Jeanette Stanton, at the state’s Capitol before heading to the Governor’s Mansion.

During the meeting, they discussed the importance of the music community in Oklahoma, ways the state can continue to be involved in supporting the music community, and how the Recording Academy can be a resource for ensuring artists’ voices are heard.

At the Governor’s Mansion, Hanson participated in a panel with other Texas Chapter members on the Recording Academy and how Oklahoma Academy members and music creators can get involved. Specifically, the group highlighted the Recording Academy’s District Advocate Day, which Hanson has been a vocal supporter of.

Taylor Hanson has participated in numerous District Advocate meetings, attended the 2024 GRAMMY Advocacy Brunch, and has also used his social platform to spread awareness about the Recording Academy’s grassroots advocacy movements.

Producer Mark Steele on Hanson’s NEW 2024 “Penny & Me” Video

By | June 9, 2024

When it came time to revisit one of their biggest hits, the Hanson trio reached out to friends, both old and new. Rock band Hanson invited long-time friend Mark Steele of Mark Steele Creative to produce the music video for their new 20th Anniversary version of 2004’s “Penny & Me.”

Peaking at #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, the 2004 song was the first independent single from the band after they left Mercury Records. It launched their first 3CG Records album Underneath, still a fan favorite to this day.

The new track, officially entitled “Penny & Me (Moonlight Version),” is far more than a remake, leaning into Nick Drake as an inspiration, the song has a lighter touch than the original that invokes nostalgia and allows the verses – some of the band’s most poetic – to truly sink in as the brother’s show off their musicianship.

Hanson reached out to new friend, actor & director Natalie Morales to direct the video effort. You’ve seen Natalie on everything from Parks & Recreation, Grey’s Anatomy, Dead to Me, and The Morning Show, but she is also an accomplished director in her own right.

To round out the cast, the band invited original “Penny & me” actress Samaire Armstrong (The O.C.) to star as the original Penny – and then cast lead singer Taylor’s own daughter Penny Hanson (named after the song itself) to play a new, young Penny. Talk about full circle.

Producer Mark Steele has been a long-time collaborator with Taylor Hanson, as well as directing and producing several videos by the band. Steele said, “Rarely does one get the opportunity to work on one project with such a widely talented group of individuals who are also kind, generous, and pushing their art at the top of their game. Working closely with Natalie, Samaire, and the all-Oklahoma crew to achieve something so technically challenging and artfully rewarding was a benchmark moment. It is always a joy and a thrill to work with the brothers – and welcoming the next generation of Hansons into the project – not only Penny, but also her brothers as crew – made it all the more special.”

“Penny & Me (Moonlight Version)” is the debut single off of the 20th Anniversary celebration album of 2004’s Underneath entitled Underneath: Complete, which drops October 4. The single debuts everywhere TODAY – and the music video debuts exclusively today on www.People.com.

Taylor Hanson on Social Media’s ‘Beautiful,’ ‘Toxic’ Power of Instant Opinions

Taylor Hanson seems to get nostalgic when thinking back to the early days of his band Hanson—and of social media. The singer-songwriter sat down with SPIN backstage at SXSW to discuss the evolution of the music industry.

“When we broke, we were literally at the crest of the analog becoming the digital. The birth of the Internet, the birth of the digital landscape. We genuinely lived in a world where you went to record stores still, radio was how you got [music], [and] the magazines owned the communication,” Hanson said. “How did you access an artist? You had to read an article. There was no social media. … But we connected with a generation that was discovering the Internet for the first time. We all of a sudden had a dialogue with people, which was pre-social-media. It was messaging boards. That was revolutionary because there was no conversation between the audience and the artist.

“So as far as whether artists have ramifications [for speaking their minds],” he continued, “part of what’s happened now is this beautiful, toxic, and amazing thing has happened, which is this idea of instant commentary. We all have an instant opinion.”

Hanson also mused on the idea that “artistic expression is personal expression.”

“We worked with some of the most amazing artists, singer-songwriters, professional songwriters, and people [who] are considered almost folk songwriters,” he said. “But every one of them has the same challenge, which is, ‘I want to write something that I care about, and then I hope it finds its way to someone else.’”

Released by their own 3CG Records in 2004, Underneath immediately ascended to #1 on Billboard’s “Top Independent Albums” chart amidst critical and popular acclaim around the globe. Underneath: Complete will see the album joined by two brand new recordings along with seven rare tracks from the original sessions. Among the highlights are fan favorites previously heard only on special project releases and bootleg recordings of live performances, including collaborations with such icons as Carole King, Glenn Ballard, Matthew Sweet, and more. Underneath: Complete arrives via 3CG Records on Friday, October 4. Pre-orders are available now.

Underneath: Complete is heralded by today’s premiere of “Penny & Me (Moonlight Version),” a newly recorded take on the beloved hit single which harkens back to the emotionally intimate textures of folk icon Nick Drake while also elevating HANSON’s signature harmonies to extraordinary new heights.

“Underneath represented a bold new chapter for the band which sparked a powerful connection between our band and fans around the world, who helped re-define a new generation of independent music releases,” says Taylor Hanson.

“This album is very personal to us,” says Isaac Hanson, “and we are really inspired by the fresh recording of ‘Penny and Me’, which we feel brings even deeper emotional weight to this song about the power of music and connection.”

An official music video is streaming now at YouTube featuring the return of Samaire Armstrong who played the Penny character in the original music video reprising her role, alongside Taylor Hanson’s daughter Penelope Hanson being introduced as Penny of a new generation. The video was directed by actor / writer / director Natalie Morales who cites the band as creative inspiration for her work in the entertainment industry.

Says Natalie Morales, of the project, “Watching the music video Gus Van Sant directed for Hanson’s “Weird” was the first time I remember thinking that maybe I could direct someday. Somehow, I grew up and I’m lucky enough to get to direct movies and music videos, and one day this past April, Taylor Hanson called me out of nowhere and asked if I would want to direct the music video for a re-recording of my actual favorite song of theirs, “Penny and Me”, and it turned out to be an incredibly moving and special experience, entirely shot under the full Pink Moon. I couldn’t be prouder.”

Hanson Revisit First Independent Album 20 Years Later with New Video Starring Taylor’s Daughter: ‘Full Circle’ (Exclusive)

By | June 7, 2024

People

Hanson‘s first independent album is getting a crazy-beautiful new expansion.

PEOPLE is exclusively premiering the music video for “Penny & Me (Moonlight Version),” the leading track from the upcoming 20th anniversary version of the brothers’ 2004 album Underneathtitled Underneath: Complete.

The new album features seven rare tracks and two brand-new recordings, including the reimagined “Penny & Me,” and will also be the focus of a U.S. tour kicking off this fall that will see the band performing two nights back to back in each given city: one acoustic, followed by one electric.

The music video for “Penny & Me (Moonlight Version)” sees the return of The O.C. actress Samaire Armstrong as the titular character whom she played in the original 2004 video for the band’s more up-tempo “Penny & Me” — a fan-favorite song that Taylor Hanson tells PEOPLE was very much about “getting out there, the start of the journey and the freedom.”

The new version, meanwhile, is “as if we’re peeling back the layers to say, at the heart of this song is this earnest romance that’s not a boy/girl — not a relational romance, in the sense — but the romance between you and the things you love and the journeys you go on,” adds Taylor, 41.

From L: Penelope Hanson, Taylor Hanson and Samaire Armstrong in the music video for “Penny & Me (Moonlight Version)”.

Alongside the return of Armstrong, 43, as Penny in the Natalie Morales-directed video, is Taylor’s real-life daughter Penelope, whom Taylor and wife Natalie Hanson named after the band’s original “Penny & Me” track.

Penelope, 19, appears in a new portion of the story, seen gathering with friends under the light of the moon. Meanwhile, Armstrong’s original Penny is seen in a follow-up to her original story, older and seemingly now in a more secure, settled-down and serene place in her life.

Near the end of the new video, Penelope, Armstrong and those gathered with them join the band — which also includes Penelope’s uncles (and Taylor’s brothers/longtime bandmates) Isaac and Zac Hanson — marking a “full-circle” moment.

One of the lyrics of the song goes, “Makin’ it by under pink moonlight, it’s always Penny and me tonight.” And both Taylor and Zac are open about the new track being inspired in part by late musician Nick Drake‘s 1972 song “Pink Moon.”

In fact, Taylor describes “Penny & Me (Moonlight Version)” to PEOPLE “as a thread of the new world that we’re building for this song.”

“[Nick was an] incredibly beautiful singer-songwriter that was impactful on us when we were starting to make this record 20 years ago,” he explains. “And so when we went to record this song, we were starting from this point of view of, ‘Nick Drake captured something really beautiful, which was almost cinematic.’ “

“You feel like you just step into this world — this beautiful quiet,” Taylor continues.

Adds Zac, 38, of the new track and video, “It brings us into the context of who we are today in a cool way and doesn’t forget, I think, the hooks of the [original] song, but brings a new style to it that still feels very authentic.”

Taylor credits Morales (Parks and RecreationDead to MeSanta Clarita Diet) for helping the music video tell “three individual stories,” which he thought was “so fresh” and “such a great challenge” that felt perfect for the updated version of the song.

Hanson Revisit First Independent Album 20 Years Later with New Music Video Starring Taylor's Daughter:

As for Penelope, the father of seven — who also shares sons Ezra, 21, River, 17, Viggo, 15, and Indiana, 5, plus daughters Wilhelmina, 11, and Maybellene, 3, with wife Natalie — says any future acting prospects and goals for his oldest daughter are “yet to be seen.”

But her “No. 1” goal for “Penny & Me (Moonlight Version)” was to make sure her presence was the right fit before she dived into the music video.

“When she signed on to do it, [she said], ‘I don’t want it to be about me. I want to just do a great job for this because I love the song and don’t want it to be just, ‘Oh, you’re my daughter, so you should,’ ” Taylor tells PEOPLE.

And while Penelope felt “excitement” and “honor” over being part of the video after hearing her name associated with the original song her whole life, her main focus, according to her dad, was, ” ‘What would Penny do? What would my Penny do in this video?’ “

“And so it was great,” he adds. “I mean, it was definitely a leap to jump in front of the camera that way, but she was down for it.”

Underneath: Complete comes more than two decades after Taylor, Zac and oldest Hanson sibling Isaac, 43, started their own label — 3CG Records, based out of their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma — and gives them another chance to look back at how far they’ve come since, including their documentary Strong Enough to Break that chronicled the band’s early independence process.

From L: Zac, Isaac and Taylor Hanson of the band Hanson.JONATHAN WEINER

And the new album has “probably two audiences,” according to Zac: “One is those who know everything, and one is people who would call themselves fans of Hanson.”

“Those who know Strong Enough to Break understand that we wrote 80 songs and recorded a lot of them for the album. It was a lot,” he says. “So we said, ‘How do we reconnect to this chapter in the band’s history? Well, one of the biggest things we can do is take more of the songs that probably should have been on that record and put them in this context.’ “

With the new album and tour, Zac tells PEOPLE, “It feels like we’re starting maybe our third act here after 20 years of indie. You go, ‘It may be a little different than we thought, and here’s the list of stuff we thought was going to happen when we launched the label and we put out this record.’ “

“Some of them are the same, a lot of them are very different, but we’re here and I think it’s going to be an amazing tour,” he adds. “It’s going to be really, really fun.”

Underneath: Complete arrives via Hanson’s 3CG Records on Friday, Oct. 4, and is available for preorder now.

The Underneath: Experience Tour kicks off Thursday, Oct. 3 in Minneapolis (featuring special guests Matthew Sweet and Phantom Planet) and runs through Monday, Nov. 11, concluding in Los Angeles. Tickets are on sale Friday, June 14 at 10 a.m. local time, with a Hanson.net members presale beginning Saturday, June 8.
