iParty: Hanson at the Pageant
Head to the source for more photos of Hanson at The Pageant in St Louis!
Nineties’ teen pop group, Hanson, comprised of the three Hanson Brothers, now in their 30s, performed Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, to a sold-out crowd at The Pageant.
20 Years After The 90’s Smash Hit “MMMBop”, Hanson Is Surprisingly Dope
The 90’s pop group Hanson, composed of brothers Isaac (guitar, vocals), Taylor (piano, vocals), and Zac (percussion, vocals), is best known for their classic 1997 hit “MMMBop”. However, the group’s mainstream popularity waned after their debut album Middle of Nowhere, more or less leaving them as a nostalgic relic of 90’s boy bands—for most people, that is. In the years since their debut, the band of brothers has kept busy, maintaining a rabid fanbase through consistent touring and releases, starting a record label and music festival, and even developing their own line of beer (obviously called “MMMHops”). ‘
2017 marks Hanson’s 25th anniversary as a band and 20th anniversary since their debut release and breakout hit. Earlier this month, the band made an appearance on NPR’s Tiny Desk to celebrate their quarter-century as a band, and the group blew many of us out of the water. While the iconic “MMMBop” did not make an appearance on their Tiny Desk setlist, the three Hansons laid out an incredible performance featuring songs they’ve written since being pre-teen pop sensations.
Like with “MMMBop”, Hanson still offers their characteristically tight harmonies of yesteryear, though their songwriting has predictably matured since the song was released when they were 16 (Isaac), 14 (Taylor), and 11 (Zac). With their inherent pop sensibilities front and center, the three tunes the group played—”Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’”, “This Time Around”, and new single “I Was Born”—are feel-good and catchy while still showing off their developed musicality. Hanson Celebrate 25-Year Anniversary With ‘Tiny Desk’ Concert
Becoming the latest act to perform on NPR‘s “Tiny Desk” series today last week, Hanson played an intimate set that shows why the three brothers still have a dedicated fan base in 2017 — as NPRnotes, the group played a sold out set the night before at the 2,000 capacity Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The setlist was as tiny as the desks, as they played three tracks off their newly released greatest hits album, Middle of Everywhere: “Thinkin Bout Somethin’,” “This Time Around” and “I Was Born.” The acoustic set up with Taylor’s piano, Isaac’s guitar and Zac’s cajón gave the performance a bit of a saloon meets jam band vibe.
“Thinkin Bout Somethin” proved to be a twangy pop-rock jam instilled with the kind of hooks that made them famous — at the bridge, Taylor even managed to get the packed NPR office to clap along. “It’s OK to clap if we ask you to clap,” he said after the song ended.” I love how you guys were like, [whispers] ‘Can we clap?’ You are the most obedient audience we’ve ever seen.”
This year is a nostalgic one for Hanson as 2017 simultaneously marks their 25th anniversary as a band and the 20th anniversary of their smash hit “MMMBop” — but youngest brother Zac is all about looking forward. “This is our 25 year anniversary, but we can’t do anything without thinking about the future,” he said. “People ask us how we stayed together as a band, and that’s really the whole source of it. The future, the next thing, the next song, the next project — that’s our game. That’s what we’re in it for.”
“This Time Around” highlighted the three members’ vocals as they launched into a soulful a capella breakdown. Their voices sound much more lived-in, devoid of the glossy pop sheen of their earlier years — not to mention, the former child stars have long been free of the voice changes that come with puberty.
“A lot of people know the song ‘MMMBop,’” Taylor said. “But the song that we really think of as the defining moment for us in connecting with our fans was a key song on our second record, ‘This Time Around,’ because it’s sort of about fighting for things and caring about things — because we’ve had this incredible connection with a lot of fans all over the world for 20 years.”
“This Time Around” peaked at No. 20 on the Hot 100 in 2000 — their third and last song to land on that chart, which followed “MMMBop”’s 1997 appearance at No. 1.
Their last soft-rock jam, “I Was Born,” propelled their setlist into the present. “When we went to do the greatest hits and do this tour, we had to do one new song,” Zac said. “And this is a song we had written a few years ago, and it just seemed like the perfect message for our band, for this time in our career, for this time in the world.”
The message of the song is that everybody was born with their own purpose in life. “Sometimes you need to hear it from someone else, be reminded you were born to do something no one else is gonna do,” said Taylor. “So that’s a good way to start our next 25 years.”
In other news, 98 Degrees isn’t the only ‘90s boy band coming out with a Christmas album this year — Hanson will drop Finally It’s Christmas on Friday (Oct. 27) followed by a string of holiday concerts in Toronto, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Can’t stop the bop: Hanson go strong at the Vogue after 25 years
Vancouver Weekly
Hanson at the Vogue Theatre, 10/18/17
Hanson turned 25 this year, and they’ve been commemorating their milestone birthday with their Middle of Everywhere 25th Anniversary World Tour. If that makes you feel old, maybe you can take just a little solace in the fact that “MMMBop” didn’t come out until five years later.
The tour is taking the band as far as South America, Europe, and Australia, but last night (Oct. 18), the North American leg brought the three brothers, Zac, Taylor, and Isaac, specifically to the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver.
Before nostalgia fully took hold, Matthew V opened the show with funky, glistening rock, just him, a guitarist, and a drummer. The homegrown 21-year-old and self-described “six-foot-four baby” played songs including “Let Me Go”, a slow number he co-wrote with Dan Mangan (another Vancouverite). V dedicated this song to the memory of Gord Downie who passed away the night before. V also tossed in a cover of Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time”, in keeping with the audience’s thirst for nostalgia.
Hanson handily quenched that thirst by mixing their best-known hits including “Where’s the Love,” “Weird,” and “If Only,” and with new songs “I Was Born” and set closer “Finally It’s Christmas”, the title-track from their new Christmas album out next week. And of course, they played their number one hit: “More than likely, it’s the first song you ever heard from us,” Taylor said introducing “MMMBop.”
The brothers switched things up all night. Isaac alternated between electric and acoustic guitar while drummer Zac and keyboardist Taylor swapped instruments. Zac also took over lead vocals from Taylor on a few songs including “Juliet.” They performed a cappella and sometimes with just Isaac on guitar, Zac wielding a shaker, and Taylor rattling a tambourine. “On and On” featured all three singing while strumming acoustic guitars.
Hanson also showed they came from classic rock and roll and more. “Waiting for This” rode a constantly moving groove laced with dexterous drumming and guitar and keyboard solos, the very kind that also powered “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’”. “Tragic Symphony” was straight-up funk. “This Time Around” was steeped in blues and country pop. And then there was “Penny & Me”, an acoustic and piano rocker for all those in the audience who’d travelled far to see the show, and there were a few fans from Bellingham and Portland.
As impressive as Zac, Taylor, and Isaac were, it must be noted that they were helped in no small part by a bassist and second guitarist. The latter in particular got many moments to shine, stepping into centre stage to trade solos with Isaac.
From reminiscing about various stages in their career, like when they left Island Def Jam Records and launched their own 3CG Records, Hanson segued into “Strong Enough to Break,” the first song from their first independent album, Underneath. Hanson dedicated this song to all the fans who stuck with them “and especially for anybody who’s ever taken shit for being a Hanson fan. We salute you tonight!”
While thanking the audience and bowing out, Taylor put it simply: “If you keep coming back, we’ll keep coming back.” With the Vogue enthusiastically sold out (or damned well near it), there’s no need to worry about Hanson skipping our town for years to come.
