What the Ale: Hanson Brothers Beer Co. release MMMHops IPA in Oklahoma
The Hanson brothers are back in town after a North American tour, and they’ve returned with their new reformulated and rebranded MMMhops IPA. It is the beer of the week.
The new MMMhops IPA just started shipping to the Oklahoma market.
Hanson Brothers Beer Co. introduced Oklahoma to their beers in 2013. Their best-selling beer was MMMhops, a beer that is a play on their worldwide hit single “MMMBop.”
Hanson partnered with Deshtil Brewing Co., based in Normal, Ill. Deshtil can brew their beers and have a distribution network to deliver them to the states that were on their tour.
“We’ve been making beer for over a decade now, and it really started with just a love of flavor and then also a love of community because, as you know, we started off doing music and still continue to be a musicians,” says Taylor Hanson. “We discovered great craft beers in cities all over the country, particularly all over the US and of course, internationally. We were witnessing this birth of craft beer, and we wanted be a part of that. We launched our craft beer endeavors in 2013 and 2014, and we said, we’re gonna do this.”

The MMMhops beer label was redone to look similar to the album cover, “Middle of Nowhere,” which included the massive hit single “MMMBop.”
“We’re proud of MMMBop. And if you know MMMBop, you know the history — it had an orange cover. So we, we wanted to embrace that,” he says. “You can connect the dots between the beer and the music. MMMhops IPA is I think, a really phenomenal beer. You gotta brew things you like, so obviously we’re proud of it. It’s very balanced.
“It’s more of a true American West Coast IPA with really strong hop components and is really bold. And at the same time, it’s drinkable. The original MMMhops was a little more malty in its body and it was actually pretty strong.”
The original MMMhops came in at 7.5% ABV, and the new one comes in at 6.3% ABV.
The beer is distributed in more than a dozen states with new markets coming online soon.
“Oklahoma, of course, is the most important. It says Tulsa, USA, on the label because that’s where it’s born, where it’s from, where it’s imagined, and we wanna make sure Oklahoma craft beer fans can always get it,” Hanson says.
HANSON will perform in their hometown during the 100th anniversary of Cain’s Ballroom. They have two Christmas shows on Friday, Dec. 13, and Saturday Dec. 14. MMMhops IPA will be available at Cain’s to enjoy during the shows.
Hanson Brothers Beer Co. also introduced Pink Moonlight hazy IPA with Peach this past summer and plan on more beers in the future. Ask for these beers if you don’t see them in your local establishment.

Tulsan of the Year – Taylor Hanson
Tulsans of the Year: Taylor Hanson is changing the conversation around the food we eat
It is Tulsans of the Year time at Tulsa World and we are looking back this year and looking at the people who have made the most impacts and today I’m here with Nicole Marshall Middleton she is our scene editor and she’s written two stories on two Tulsans of the year, the first one we’re going to talk about today is Taylor Hanson of the Hanson band, world famous band. But Nicole, this year Taylor is not being recognized for his music, what is it that he did this past year that makes him a Tulsan of the year?
We’re recognizing his contribution with Food on the Move, Taylor founded Food on the Move in 2014, so this is the 10th year, this is a big milestone for them and they’ve got a lot going on. Everybody recognizes him for his music around the world but this is something they may not know about and we thought that it’s doing something good for the community and we wanted to thank him for that. Food on the Move right now is working on a project called Food Home and it’s a multiphase project which includes an urban farm, a food hub, a community hun, and a market. He’s got a lot going on with Food on the Movie because the mission is not only to just feed Tulsans, it’s teaching Tulsans how to feed themselves. It’s big effort is food deserts and doing away with those in our community but it is also trying to change the conversation about how we get our food to have these local hubs in communities and in gardens and really bring to the table more local farmers and fresh foods because of the effect it has on our health. Keeping us out of the doctor’s office and unfortunately Oklahoma does not have a very good health record when it comes to children and hunger and food insecurity and he’s going to not only food deserts, that’s where there’s not a grocery store, but sometimes there’s not even a convenience store and trying to teach them what a vegetable looks like. It’s fun to hear how exciting it is and what a passion that he has for this. It made me tired to think about all the travel and the touring and then he’s got this whole other thing going on. That’s one thing about some of our Tulsan’s of the year – not only recognizing people who are doing new things it is recognizing people who can sustain good things. Obviously there is Circle Cinema, there is Taylor Hanson, recognizing the fact that he has done this for 10 years and it is still going strong is a big thing and we wanted to give him a shout out.
Absolutely! Thank you Nicole for your time.
