If there’s one song that’s sure not to be left off any definitive list of ’90s hits, it’s Hanson’s ‘MmmBop.’ The three wholesome-looking Aryan brothers’ 1997 smash launched them into pop stardom and briefly earned them a place in millions of teeny-bopper hearts.
However if you reckon Isaac, Taylor and Zac have been languishing in 9-5 obscurity after the dizzying heights of their late-’90s success, think again. Having shifted over 15 million units since their breakthrough hit, the fellows clearly have a solid fanbase.
The first single ‘Give A Little’ taken from their forthcoming album Shout It Out is a light-hearted rock’n’roll number on which Taylor gives some pointers on how to win a lady’s heart on the dance floor. Things get a lot more interesting with the driving rhythm of the ’80s rock/pop style RAC remix, which even more so than the original, shows off the prettiness of the melody.
The Hanson boys have one more ace up their sleeve as legendary Hip Hop producer, percussionist and music historian ?uestlove brings his own magic to ‘Give A Little’. Admit it; you wouldn’t have predicted that collaboration. Yet rest assured, your curiosity will be amply rewarded.
?uest’s psychedelic soul interpretation is as innovative, mellow and deliciously trippy as you would expect, lending the single a sophistication more befitting of the all grown-up Hanson. The Roots’ drummer creates a subtly busy soundscape; enough to keep you engaged anew after several listens without being distracted by too much sonic clutter. Lush.
‘Give A Little’ is out now.
Shout It Out is released on Hanson’s independent label ‘3CG Records’ on June 5, 2011.
