YouTube artist ‘Seouls’ himself

YouTube artist Michael Aronson has released his latest music video lambasting Seoul’s controversial new slogan, “I.Seoul.U”.

The American expat artist’s new song, “I.Seoul Myself,” is a cheeky ribbing of the slogan at the city’s expense, set to ’80s song “I Touch Myself” by the Divinyls.

The video has Aronson posed in front of various urban backdrops and working city names into song lyrics, “to extend the grammar of the original logo to absurd extremes,” he explained. “Basically, now every proper noun gets to be a verb.”

“I Daegu U whenever you miss me. I Jeonju U, that means you should kiss me,” the song starts, before going on to include Panmunjeom, Suwon and other cities.

“But I don’t Seoul anybody else. When I’m home without you I Seoul myself.”

In an interview with The Korea Times, Aronson explained, “I’m not actually criticizing this slogan, so much as I’m celebrating its absurdity. I’ve become kind of desensitized to Konglish at this point.”

Aronson admitted “I.Seoul.U” was his top choice among the three finalist slogans that were voted on by the public, the other two being “Seouling,” which also treats the city name as a verb, and “Seoulmate.”

“Being from New York, I didn’t think much of it at first _ I think it kind of works,” he said. “I only jumped on the bandwagon once I saw others having fun coming up with variations.”

Following the October announcement of the winning slogan, countless memes have appeared online ridiculing the slogan for its text-message style and awkward construction. He was encouraged by two friends to make the video, citing Canadian expat Douglas Vautour first putting the slogan to the Australian pop song, and Aaron Downing who encouraged Aronson to dust off his video equipment.

Aronson, who works full time for a local publishing company, produces and stars in his YouTube videos as a hobby.

He previously gained acclaim with “Seoul Subway Song” rap praising the local metro system, and in 2012 he was named an honorary citizen of Seoul by Mayor Park Won-soon.

This new song may not win him any friends in the mayoral office, who have doubled down on defending the slogan.

“Expect them to ask for that honorary citizenship back …,” said YouTube user Mike Williams in comments on Aronson’s new song.

“I.Seoul Myself” and “Seoul Subway Song” can be viewed on Aronson’s YouTube channel, hdefined, where visitors can view his other music videos, including “Hangul Rap,” “The Kim Yu-Na Song” and “Kimbap,” a parody of the Hanson song “MMMBop.” The channel also contains recorded comedy skits and Aronson’s vlog rants.

WEEKLY PIC

We are excited to share this week that The Hop Jam is coming back for the third year on May 22nd, 2016following the HANSON Day celebration. We hope to see you there!

MESSAGE FROM THE BAND

We are excited to be sharing the official dates for HANSON Day and The Hop Jam 2016. HANSON Day will be May 20th and 21st, and The Hop Jam will be on May 22nd. With only a few weeks left in this year, our focus is on what will be happening in 2016 and how to make each event worthy of the hundreds and thousands of miles so many fans travel to attend.  There is still a lot of information that we will be sharing in early 2016, like HANSON Day special events and of course the line up of Brewers and Bands for The Hop Jam, but we hope you will save the date and make plans to take a trip to Tulsa for spring music and more.  Next week is our last week at 3CG before we close the book on 2015. It has been a great year, and we couldn’t think of a better way to end it than sharing Christmas music with the Finally It’s Christmas Special. We will be streaming on December 18th at 6PM CT and with a little luck, you will join us.

The 570

POP, BEEP, BLIP

OWL CITY — Mobile Orchestra
THE GOOD: Owl City (American electronic singer/songwriter Adam Young) returns with its (his) fifth.
THE BAD: The entire album reeks of desperation, in that …
THE NITTY GRITTY: Apparently Young will do just about anything to repeat the mainstream success of 2010’s breakthrough hit “Fireflies.” “Verge” is your typical prom season/graduation song. “Unbelievable” is one of those “wasn’t childhood wonderful” tunes flashing back to Nintendo, the Lion King and Fresh Prince of Bel Air. ’90s kids Hanson even guest star.
“Back Home” adds a little twang and courts the country market by having Young team up with Jake Owen. “You’re Not Alone” goes after the Christian rock crowd by bringing Britt Nicole into the mix.
Just about every track follows some kind of formula, and most of the music rings completely hollow. Mobile Orchestra would have been far more satisfying if the guy just made another catchy synthpop record. But I guess that wouldn’t bring him back to the American Music Awards.

13 Christmas Songs That Only ’90s Kids Love From *NSYNC Carols To Ren & Stimpy Classics

By | December 11, 2015

Bustle

For most people, hearing “Christmas Songs” and “90s” in the same sentence together means one thing and one thing only: Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. And yeah, that song is a total juggernaut of a festive musical treat (d’uh!), but it isn’t the absolute of all ’90s Christmas hits. As any ’90s kid will tell you, we were spoiled for choice when it came to Christmas music back then. The obligatory Christmas album or song was the benchmark for pop bands to truly declare to the world that they were were somebody in music and as such these musical moments have become our own benchmarks for nostalgia.

The problem is though, unless you were a kid during the ’90s then the odds are pretty limited that you’re going to even know that half of these songs even exist, never mind actually enjoy them. Not every song can measure up to Mariah, but that doesn’t make them any less important to the Christmas experience. Here are 13 of those songs that only ’90s kids could love.

4. Hanson — “Everybody Knows The Claus”

From Snowed In, an album which my family probably remembers as torturing them with incessantly repeated plays throughout the Christmas of ’97, Hanson’s “Everybody Knows The Claus” feels like a song that you already knew long before they sang it, except it’s actually one of their own original compositions, which is pretty impressive. Listen back and relive that massive crush you once held for Taylor Hanson.

With the wildly popular country crossover act Zac Brown Band coming to the Schott this weekend, we’re counting down our favorite Zacks/Zachs/Zacs/however the hell you choose to spell it.

The baby of the Hanson brood, he laid down the beats for “MMMBop” — assuming that wasn’t just a studio musician filling in.
