MASTERS by Winn Claybaugh

Taylor Hanson co-founded the Hanson Brothers band at age nine in 1992 with his six- and eleven-year-old brothers, Isaac and Zac. The young performers spent the next five years building a fan base in their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, before bursting onto the world stage with their smash single, “MMMBop.” The song ranked #1 in 27 countries simultaneously and was followed by multiple Grammy nominations, five consecutive top 40 singles, and millions of albums sold.

Performing together for over 30 years, Taylor and his brothers continue to draw a global fanbase. They founded 3CG Records in 2003 and have sold more than 16 million albums to date. Touring extensively, they’ve performed sold-out concerts for over 3 million fans around the globe.

In addition to their musical endeavors, in 2007 Hanson launched their Take The Walk grassroots campaign to provide poverty and HIV/AIDS relief in Africa. In 2014, Taylor founded the Tulsa-based volunteer organization, Food on the Move, to end food insecurity by offering fresh produce, prepared meals, and access to community and health resources.

Interviewed by Winn Claybaugh, Taylor describes his 30-year career, including his performances at the 1998 Grammy’s and his appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay LenoThe Late Show with David Letterman, and Saturday Night Live.

Although passionate about his music career, Taylor is equally committed to using his celebrity to give back to multiple causes and charities. He talks about being “tapped on the shoulder” to get involved with organizations like Tom’s Shoes, Music Cares, Women Life Freedom, Food On The Move, and more. A family man with 7 children, Taylor focuses on maximizing his time rather than pursuing balance in his marriage, career, fame, and philanthropy.

At Back to the Island 2018, Isaac made up a song on the spot and then seemed to forget about it.  It was resurrected for the Time Machine EP – Every Time We Touch now has the chorus that started from this untitled song.  Check out the original, as it was written:

Classic Album Review: Hanson | Underneath

Tinnitist

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Yep, it’s that Hanson; the MmmBop tykes. Only Zac, Ike and Taylor aren’t exactly tykes anymore.

So naturally, their third studio album Underneath finds the Oklahoma siblings trying to put away the bubbly Motown pop of their youth for more mature pursuits. Not that they’ve gone goth or anything; the power-pop guitar crunch, soulful-beyond-their-years vocals and shimmering harmonies that defined their signature sound are still in full effect. But on these 15 cuts — some co-written by the likes of Matthew Sweet — that sonic weaponry is deployed in the service of strummy heartland rockers, overly earnest groove-pop and soppy ballads reminiscent of singer-songwriters like John Mayer. Admittedly, nothing here will make you forget MmmBop. But if any of it helps you remember Hanson fondly, then Underneath has done its job.
