The View Surprises Co-Host Alyssa Farah Griffin With a Hanson Concert for Her Birthday — Watch Video

The View surprised Alyssa Farah Griffin with the ultimate throwback for her 35th birthday.

During Friday’s episode of ABC’s long-running daytime talk show, Griffin walked out expecting to host a dog adoption segment, only to find that her favorite ’90s band Hanson — comprised of brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac — was on stage to deliver a one-of-a-kind concert experience.

What followed was a medley of some of their greatest hits, including “Penny and Me,” “Where’s the Love” and, of course, “MMMBop.” Watch above.

After their performance, Griffin made a beeline for drummer Zac, now 38, who was just 11 years old when Hanson broke out in 1997. “You were my first crush,” she told him.

“You got me Hanson!” Griffin gushed to her co-hosts. “I was genuinely shocked, which is the best.”

It was later revealed that this performance marked something of an anniversary, with eldest brother Isaac pointing out that it’d been 20 years since the band first sang “Penny and Me” on The View. You can watch that performance from April 2004 below:

Hanson — who have put out 10 additional studio albums since 1997’s multi-platinum “Middle of Nowhere” — are set to release an extended edition of their 2004 LP “Underneath” on Friday, Oct. 4. A new music video for “Penny and Me,” directed by Grey’s Anatomy’s Natalie Morales and starring The O.C.’s Samaire Armstrong, was released earlier this month.

MUSIC Hanson announces 2024 tour with Phantom Planet. Get tickets today

NY Post

Isaac (L), Zac and Taylor Hanson sing together in concert.

Hanson isn’t above a clever gimmick.

The ’90s trio behind the unforgettable cultural sensation “Mmmbop” just announced that they’re taking off on their ‘Underneath Experience Tour’ this fall. They’ll play their 2004 album “Underneath” in its entirety two nights in a row at venues all over North America on the run.

That’s not all, though.

Each night will be wholly different ‘Underneath Experience’ experiences.

On night one, Taylor, Isaac and Zac will perform an acoustic version of the 13-song record along with special guest Matthew Sweet. To sweeten the deal, all “night one” shows will be followed by an afterparty DJ’d by Taylor.

After that, they’ll return to the same venue the following night for an electric set accompanied by Phantom Planet.

And, yes, they’ll bring their unconventional tour to New York City.

Their first night (aka the acoustic set) goes down at Palladium Times Square on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The brothers will fire up the amps for their electric night two on Thursday, Oct. 17.

Can’t wait?

Fans can purchase tickets for all upcoming shows on sites like Vivid Seats; the official on-sale is Friday, June 14.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

“Underneath”

The 13-track 2004 record is a departure from the boy band’s well-documented bubblegum pop sound.

Over 54 minutes, they lean into hard-charging yet harmonious rock, jangly indie pop, soaring ballads and radio friendly jams about misery all while wearing their earnest hearts on their sleeves.

Undeniable highlights include the infectious opening track “Strong Enough To Break,” shiny, Hall and Oates-esque “Lost Without Each Other” and energetic “Get Up & Go.”

Don’t skip the horn-heavy “Crazy Beautiful” either. While Hanson clearly tried to escape the “Mmmbop” sound, you can hear a bit of the undeniably catchy hit in there.

To hear the record in full, you can find “Underneath” here.

Hanson Expand 'Underneath' For 20th Anniversary

(Big Hassle Media) Hanson is marking two decades of independence with a major 20th-anniversary celebration of their landmark third album, Underneath, including an expanded deluxe edition re-release, unique concert tour, and more.

Released by their own 3CG Records in 2004, Underneath immediately ascended to #1 on Billboard’s “Top Independent Albums” chart amidst critical and popular acclaim around the globe. Underneath: Complete will see the album joined by two brand new recordings along with seven rare tracks from the original sessions. Among the highlights are fan favorites previously heard only on special project releases and bootleg recordings of live performances, including collaborations with such icons as Carole King, Glenn Ballard, Matthew Sweet, and more. Underneath: Complete arrives via 3CG Records on Friday, October 4.

Underneath: Complete is heralded by today’s premiere of “Penny & Me (Moonlight Version),” a newly recorded take on the beloved hit single which harkens back to the emotionally intimate textures of folk icon Nick Drake while also elevating HANSON’s signature harmonies to extraordinary new heights.

“Underneath represented a bold new chapter for the band which sparked a powerful connection between our band and fans around the world, who helped re-define a new generation of independent music releases,” says Taylor Hanson.

“This album is very personal to us,” says Isaac Hanson, “and we are really inspired by the fresh recording of ‘Penny and Me’, which we feel brings even deeper emotional weight to this song about the power of music and connection.”

An official music video is streaming now at YouTube featuring the return of Samaire Armstrong who played the Penny character in the original music video reprising her role, alongside Taylor Hanson’s daughter Penelope Hanson being introduced as Penny of a new generation. The video was directed by actor/writer/director Natalie Morales who cites the band as creative inspiration for her work in the entertainment industry.

Says Natalie Morales, of the project, “Watching the music video Gus Van Sant directed for Hanson’s “Weird” was the first time I remember thinking that maybe I could direct someday. Somehow, I grew up and I’m lucky enough to get to direct movies and music videos, and one day this past April, Taylor Hanson called me out of nowhere and asked if I would want to direct the music video for a re-recording of my actual favorite song of theirs, “Penny and Me”, and it turned out to be an incredibly moving and special experience, entirely shot under the full Pink Moon. I couldn’t be prouder.”

HANSON will further celebrate Underneath’s milestone anniversary with a very special North American headline tour. The Underneath: Experience Tour will amplify the history of the pivotal album, with two-night stands in 12 cities showcasing all-acoustic arrangements on Night One, while Night Two will feature the band in full electric power.
