MmmBop lives

I’ll never forget the night when I took a girlfriend to Opening Night in downtown Oklahoma City. It was a great date on New Year’s Eve. Where else could she see fireworks in freezing temperatures? I knew it would impress her but I had no idea how much.

We were wandering around the old Myriad building – where the Ford Center is now. I didn’t realize how boring it was going to be trying to fill time until midnight’s main event.

Then it happened.

We happened into a room with about 50 folding chairs and some little kids twanging guitars and wildly smacking drums.

They sang cover songs and some original to them.

Then they broke out this goofy little song that was stuck in my head all night.

In fact, I could still hear it banging around up there days later.

I didn’t hear any more from those kids for a few years until I heard that same infectious song on the radio.

It was MmmBop and those floppy haired kids turned out to be the band Hanson – three brothers from Tulsa.

Now those same kids are planning another concert tour and they are releasing a new album later this year.

I can’t help but like them. Believe me, I’ve tried to hate them.

But nostalgia and the captivating “Mmm bop, ba duba dop” just won’t let me.
